View Full Version : High School Security Cameras
so, my high school recently installed small cameras in various locations throughout the school. the initial response was "wow wtf, i didnt notice. why didn't they tell us prior" a lot of the students and teachers are discussing this.
teachers and students were definitely not notified beforehand about the installation and are talking a lot about the situation, what do you guys think about this?

I have no problem with them.
Last semester, my school installed about twenty+ cameras all throughout campus, no one was notified. However, I have no problem with it, besides the fact that our district is going through massive budget cuts (about -$14,000,000) and my school is only three years old so I think maybe they could have done this when it first opened. But honestly, it's whatever.

No issue whatsoever.
I'm not sure if you're trying to argue that you shuold have been notified or they shouldn't have done it. Personally, I see nothing wrong with video cameras in schools. In addition to this, they have legally every right to do so. You're making something out of nothing here.

I almost feel like taking a stance against this just so everyone isn't making this thread seem stupid...but, nah, I'm good.
They're cameras. What the fuck are you doing in school you don't want videotaped? Because you may want to knock that shit off and read something.

No problem at all, it's not like they're spying on kids at home like that school did with the laptops

We had a competition to see who could kick a Football into one in the wall. I cant remember who won but the camera ended up on the ground and we all ended up getting called in to an assembly and getting blasted

Shouldn't matter so long as the school system has the money for it and isn't just wasting funds.

Not a problem at all. They could be helpful if something were to go down.

If you're not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worry about. Get over it. There have been enough issues in public schools that justify this.

That is the absolute 100% wrong view to take on civil rights legislation.
With that being said, the camera is justified and 100% allowed via the law. However, that attitude you take is wrong. I can't even begin to start with it.

There were security cameras in my old high school, nobody gave a shit. I do have a problem with it, I value my privacy and I dont like giving it, but that may be for personal reasons.

So then why don't you drop out? It's the same with security cameras in businesses. If you work there and don't like it, then quit.

You think America's bad.... in the UK, we have an estimated 4.2million CCTV cameras. That's one per fourteen people. That just strikes me as insane.

What kind of privacy do you have in the hallways of a high school anyway? It's not they're putting cameras in your lockers. Even then.. I still ask, what kind of privacy do you have in a high school locker.

A buddy of mine got suspended for putting gum on a security camera back in high school. In retrospect it wasn't a good idea on his part.

Not really. Public places have security cameras. No one would refuse to go to Wal-Mart because they have security cameras. My high school had cameras all over the place. What are they going to film? 99% of it is just going to be people walking from one room to another. If they use it to catch someone doing something else (fighting, graffiti, whatever), then good for them. This has nothing to do with my views on Civil Rights legislation.

I just don't see how it is an invasion of privacy. It is going to film you for 3 seconds as you walk past it from one room to another.

The attitude of "well, if you have nothing to be worry about then you shouldn't be concerned" is dangerous, as that same logic can apply to anything that a larger power tries to implement "for the greater good".
While I agree with you that cameras in high school should be there and there is nothing wrong with them, I disagree on the way you reached that conclusion.

It isn't an invasion of privacy. New jersey TLO laid out what is and is not private in schools. The issue of schools is irrelevant.
The issue is your, "well, if you have nothing to worry about, then why do you care?" attitude. That's bullshit.

I'm applying that attitude to this situation. I'm not applying it on a larger scale, like I've already said. I'm not talking about the legality of it when I use that argument. The OP felt like this was an invasion of his privacy and I'm only applying that attitude to him.

i dont think they have to notify any one. the camreas are just there to see whats going on, it could be useful for lots of things like if something was stolen or if there was a fight they could see who was in the fight (like any of that matters)
but there arent any problems with them. the only time you have to worry about them is if you have something to hide

When I was a junior in high school we had one camera in a major hallway and went on lock down because of some kid that said he saw someone with a gun. Long story short, no gun, camera saw nothing. After the incident they installed cameras all around the school. Fights/theft/all other shit went way down after the installment. As far as the cameras go, it improved our school. It's not a waste as along as the safety and welfare of the student is taken into consideration.

Every school I've ever been in (as a student or teacher) has had cameras. How are there even schools without them still?
I mean, many schools had them over a decade ago:

But seriously, they have every right to do this.
My entire school was on camera. It's how I eventually got caught dumping fake vomit onto one of the staircases. I don't know how it took two weeks of me hitting a different staircase every week before they caught me.

If I said I dont like being filmed, then I dont like being filmed, and that means being on a security camera...and like I said before, there are very personal reasons behind that.

Currently reading 1984. The Party is so harsh compared to some cameras in a school.
My school has cameras, and my old school did. When someone broke a window, for example they used it to find out who it was. They are for the benefit.

been at my school forever most of them are dummys me and my friends know the only 2 that work
My school has cameras in the majority of the hallways and near the enterances. The only ones that are constantly viewed (they're shown on the TV in the principal's office) are the ones near the cafeteria/main enterance, but the rest are still recorded. Personally, I have no problem with them. They've come in handy before.

My school has cameras but they don't work. They also bought them (along with installing automatic doors) right after they fired almost every teacher in the district. That's the only problem I have with them; it seems like such useless spending.

i think it's good for any type of vandalism, of course, but we have cameras at my school and someone recently stole $500 worth of change from the vending machines and about 3 days later they stole all the computers out of the portables. so they aren't always super effective because no one has been caught yet.
