View Full Version : Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen; 2011)
TJ Wells

"The prolific auteur will direct Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and the France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. Set to shoot this summer in Paris, Midnight in Paris is a romantic comedy centering on a family traveling to the city for business. There is also a young engaged couple that has their lives transformed throughout the journey. The film, according to the press release, “celebrates a young man’s great love for Paris, and simultaneously explores the illusion people have that a life different from their own is better.” Michael Sheen (The Queen), newcomer Nina Arianda, Tom Hiddleston (Thor), Corey Stoll (Salt), veteran TV actor Mimi Kennedy and Kurt Fuller (Mr. Woodcock) will also star."
The man is a fucking workhorse.

I haven't actively disliked a Woody movie since Anything Else. I like-to-love everything from Melinda and Melinda to Whatever Works.
Edit: Shit, I forgot about Cassandra's Dream. Well, let's pretend that doesn't exist.

Woody's probably going to die of extreme old age soon, so he might as well keep pumping shit out while he has time. And I do have faith that he has another VCB -quality film up his sleeve.

He's only 74. Rohmer was 87 when he made his last movie.

Woody said himself that if he stops working, he feels as if he'll die.
How ironic, his neurosis, the very thing that gave him his career, is what is also destroying it.
Love the poster, though.

I love Purple Rose, but man I don't see it in Alice. I think that's the worst of the 19 or so I've seen.

Alice is NOT close to my top 15, but I'd probably put it in the mid 20s, and as someone who loves nearly all his films (and has seen around 35) that still means I enjoyed it.

That's fair then. That and Celebrity are probably the two weakest I've seen so far, but I've still got a fair few left.

Anything Else sucks? Damn it. I was hopeful because I love Ricci.
And to clarify, I don't mind those two movies. I just think they're average to slightly-below-average, which is bottom rung for what I've seen from Woody.

Then he needs to cast Christina Ricci in another movie as a personal apology to me. Haha. I was also surprisingly lukewarm about Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex...

I so nearly loved this film, but the last twenty minutes or so lost me a bit. Still liked it a lot, I just wasn't a fan of how Allen chose to wrap up most of the storylines/relationships, and the ending seemed sudden to me. Still, Wilson does a good job (though, I think with a better actor, the role could have been a real powerhouse), the supporting cast is terrific, and Cotillard was as radiant as always.

going to this tomorrow for my birthday. i'm way excited, but not sure if my family is haha
Saw this last night and really enjoyed it. There were quite a few parts that I found hysterical, but no one else in the theater laughed, so it was kind of awkward at times laughing as much as I was. I would say this is the second best film I've seen this year behind The Tree of Life.
I liked it but I wish he had used anyone other than Wilson. Also, I would have enjoyed it more if there hadn't been some awful teenage couple behind me LOUDLY making out the entire time (well, except for the last fifteen minutes because that's when they decided to leave).

Right, I gotcha. I'm sure you aren't alone there, haha, he is pretty divisive. I like his stuff with Wes Anderson a lot and I thought he was brilliantly cast here. Made me wonder why he hasn't ever been a Woody Allen protagonist before.

I had no idea what to expect beyond it being a Woody Allen movie in Paris starring Owen Wilson and I absolutely loved it. Wilson was perfect, Cotillard was delightful and it had all the best qualities of a great Woody Allen film. I was completely surprised at how much I enjoyed it, movie of the year so far (and I pretty much see everything).

I was completely unprepared for all of the literary references. Hilarious. I want to reread A Moveable Feast now.
Yup I want to echo my love for this movie as well. I went in expecting some fun romantic movie about Paris and was surprised at the time traveling aspect of the movie. I also appreciate it being PG 13. I didn't get all the name drops and jokes they make about different writers yet that did not inhibit me from enjoying the movie. Now if only I have the chance to visit Paris one day

I just thought her performance was terrible. I can definitely appreciate an unlikeable character, but McAdams was unconvincing and hard to watch.
