wessa, I am all talk, fireonmylips etc get yo asses in here. :)

Murray has a great draw, a qualifier in the first round, and possibly Gonzales in the third round, he's probably the first "big" player he could face, plus he could easily beat him.

Is Agassi out or what? He didn't get a seeding in the end did he?

I hope Murray wins something soon. I hate the fact that in the last 10 years Britain has been represented by a serial loser and a Canadian. Murray is awesome and I do believe he can win a Grand Slam.

YO, i just got free tickets for monday and tuesday night sessions, it is only one per night so im going alone, but that means i get to see Agassi play in his last open, im fuckin psyched

it sucks that agassi isnt seed but if i remember correctly i think the us open does it by rankings, the only one that picks its own seedings is wimbledon, that is why henman is always seeded higher than his world ranking (i may be wrong on this, but i thought that was how it is done)

wessa
08/25/06, 08:20 PM
also, sucks that clijsters is out, i saw her semifinal match last year in person, she is a good player and she is fun to watch because she is constantly running down shots...

i really cant wait to go because in years past i go to late sessions andthe matches are only in the stadiums, but i want to check out matches on all the side courts because i played on a few of those courts in HS and college, so i want to see some guys playing on the same court that i did, even if they are not even in the top 50

Murray will have a good chance, tough first round draw V Kendrick though. Murray's been on great form at all the Masters events recently and beat Federer a week or so ago at Cincinatti. And wessa that's pretty awesome that you're going.

I'm past caring about Tim and Greg now tbh. Supposedly Djokovic could become a Brit soon, no idea how that one works out though.

EDIT: I counted 17 Russians in the Women's draw hahaha.

i rate Baghdatis over Murrey as far as newcomers are concerned & agassi got served the short end of the stick, especially since it's his fare-thee-well tour, but that's tennis. for some reason i think i'll be keeping an eye on Robredo, doubt he'll come close to taking the tittle but we'll see how he goes

xglassjawx
08/26/06, 07:25 AM
Yeah, IMO Baghdatis can easily mix it with top 10 players now. I mean, if he played Hewitt or Stepanek, you definently wouldn't write him off.

I don't see Murray going that far. He really needs to work on his conditioning before he starts contending for slams. I've never seen a player that gets as tired as he does and has such trouble finishing out matches in general. I like Roddick to get to the finals since he's not on Federer's side of the draw. Agassi probably wont make it past the second round. But the US Open is my favorite slam and I cant wait for it to start!

Yeah, I suppose that's a valid critisism, I'm a Murray fan but you can't really argue against that.

Roddick/Federer is still my dream final but I'd take Fed/Nadal also just because Nadal's speed negates a little bit of Fed's advantage on the faster court.

nfggc10
08/26/06, 08:21 AM
On a sidenote, I think it's a mistake how most tourney's are slowing down their courts in order to get more rallies during points. I miss the Sampras style of putting away points at the net. That's why Roddick is playing so well now because he's hitting the ball deep in the corners and coming in behind them to finish off the point. Baseline rallies actually make matches more boring to me so it seems like they're taking the sport back a step.

xglassjawx
08/26/06, 08:22 AM
Long rallies are fine by me.

nfggc10
08/26/06, 08:28 AM

Yeah but there's no aggression from the baseline in the form of winners. You're just being defensive and hoping your opponent makes a mistake either by hitting an error or by poor court positioning. Coming in to net is the ultimate offensive move in tennis and you're forcing a tough passing shot to beat you which is tough under pressure. Fed and Roddick are coming to net more and more which is why I think they're the ones to beat at the Open besides the obvious reasons. And a note to Murray: enough with the damn drop shot. Brad Gilbert's even been pissed off at courtside when he uses that. Players are too fast and can easily just flip it over for a winner.

xglassjawx
08/26/06, 09:31 AM
I do like his slices right from the back of the court though. It's a great tool as it takes so long for the ball to drop that it gives him a ton of time to get back into the point.

I really like you dude, and I like Murray but I hope Kendrick kicks his ass. I was so sad when he lost to Nadal. It was his first 5 setter ever. I've got to stick with my fellow high school alumni in this match.

Well, California alone is larger than the entire United Kingdom so everything is much more accessible for you. LA and San Francisco are only about 4 hours away from me and they each host tournaments (including the one Murray won against Hewitt).

And so we can stop referring to each other by username, I'm Kevin. What's your name?

Did someone say clisters is out this year?
i'm usually more up to date but school just started and it's been hectic.

Scoop Jackson wrote an artical about Andy Roddick, ugh, can that guy just stick to basketball? I think he is the worst writer that espn has. Anyway, i read the article, he basically quotes other people and comments on it. He talks about wether roddick is overrated. Personally, i think roddick is fine where he is now but he will never be a top 5 player again. I think he has one slam left in him, two if he is lucky. The guy has a serve. He runs around his backhand all day and it is not like he has the best forehand on tour. Now he has gotten into this thing where he slices every backhand, who is he? Steffi Graf?

i just got back from the open, a couple of thoughts:

1. The match was obviously very good. If this match is played on a court with nobody their, pavel takes agassi out easily. Agassi just doesn't have much power anymore and he eventually is going to lose just because he is overmatched. Pavel just got killed by the crowd, i have to say that the people were pretty classless. At one point, the crowd started the wave in between pavel's first and second serve. Also, people were constantly yelling things causing pavel to hold off on serving at least 10-15 times. This shit would never happen at Wimbledon or Roland Garros. Plus, so many people are so dumb, they start cheering when agassi hits a ball that is obviously out, then when they hear that the point went to pavel, they start booing. The crowd just sucked overall.

2. I really don't like instant replay for a couple of reasons. First, it is only used on the main courts. Until they have the power to use it on all the courts it shouldnt be used. How is it fair that the big names are able to utilize instant replay but lower ranked players aren't. Second, whenever a ball was close enough for either player to take a closer look, the crowd kept yelling for a replay. It was dumb. Plus, i think there were four replays and just one call was overturned.

3. The US Open has become beyond obscene when it comes to how it is run. I got free tickets but paid 13 for parking, 15 for a program, and would have paid 15 dollars for a crappy dinner if i hadnt bought a hot dog before i went in. they forced me to check my bag at a cost of three dollars, even though i followed all the guidelines on their website for the correct bag and i even measured it to make sure it was the correct size. And their is an overwhelming sense of snobbery. There is even a special section in the parking area for Lexus owners. I kid you not...

Overall, though, it was a good show. the best part about the open is walking arounbd the grounds, so if you live in the metropolitan area, get some tickets for this week.

that's exactly why i don't like the us hardcourt series, the crowd have no respect.

in other news; Ljubicic is out. Roddick, Fish, Djokovic, Robredo, Youzhny, Novak, Massu, Srichaphan, & my man Baghdatis are all through.

at one point there were these people who were sitting directly behind the court, and they got up to leave between points. The umpire said please sit down the players are ready, but they didnt hear, the crowd started booing them, i think somebody told them what they were doing and they quickly dove into the nearest empty seats.

I think one problem is the fact that arthur ashe stadium seats 23,000 people. The top tier is chaos. People walk up and down the aisles whenever they want and you routinely hear cell phones going off. I think this sets a bad precedent.

Haha. Players peak so early nowadays, players like Roddick, Hewitt and Safin were amazing 3 or 4 years ago, now they can't touch Federer haha.Hewitt is probably about done, he just doesn't have the power to contend in every slam and relies to much on his oppenents making errors. I still think Roddick's new style will allow him to beat Fed in the final next weekend. I've never seen him hit so many deep backhands as he has in the last month.

2. I really don't like instant replay for a couple of reasons. First, it is only used on the main courts. Until they have the power to use it on all the courts it shouldnt be used. Plus, i think there were four replays and just one call was overturned. The weird thing is that I've had this same opinion since they introduced it and yet I've never heard one commentator mention this as an issue. In a way, they're making an uneven playing field because if an outside court has a call that could determine the match and its incorrect that player is just out of luck where Fed, Nadal, or any star player has the right to just challenge calls for the sake of using them like they normally do towards the end of sets. Alot of players even use them as a way of catching their breath which isn't right either.

Sidenote: Federer won't get his tourney started until Wednesday and if he's going to get another Open he'll have to play 7 matches in 12 days which could make him vulnerable in the semis and final. I would never question his physical ability but this gives the field an ounce of hope I guess.

im sorry, but there is no way he is making it to the 4th round. He just doesn't have it anymore, his strokes have nothing behind them anymore. Pavel would have beat him if it wasnt for the crowd being assholes. I just cant see Baghditis losing to Agassi.Yeah that was my dream scenario. Honestly, I don't see Baghdatis giving up a set. The only way Agassi has a chance is if the crowd is similar which it should for another night match. Agassi needs to serve like 75% if he's to have a chance. Whoever wins though will get knocked out by Roddick eventually.

i dont know, i thnk baghdatis is better than roddick. Roddick does two things: serve and hit forehands, players have been exposing his weak backhand for the last two years. Roddick can win, but i wouldnt hand him the match so early.

His backhand has improved a great deal and can go down the line with it now and is putting it deeper in the corners. His % up at net is insane now and he's getting more confortable with his volleys and more importantly when to attack the net which is half the battle. He used to never break serve either and he's been doing it 3 or 4 times a match which is a good sign.

It's the last of the 4 grand slams for the year and the only one played in the US and its in New York which elevates it even more. And all of the top players on the mens side are playing really well so it's no slam dunk as to who is gonna win it.

if safin got stuck in & put the hard yards in on the practice court, he could be one of, if not the, best player in the world. he's almost a wasted talent. in saying that though, i'll be backing nalbandian to take this match

tennis is pretty huge, maybe not a ton of kids, but there are a lot of adults who are really into tennis because a lot of adults still play it. The Open is a big deal (a bigger deal than nfl opening day) especially this one being agassi's last tournament. The grounds at the tennis center are always packed.

agreed and then some, tennis is an insane sport. These people who become pros, they are playing like 3 hours a day since they were 8 or 9 years old. So many tennis players burn out because it probably takes more commitment than any other youth sport. As athletes those guys are ridiculous. Eh I'm American and I think tennis players are better athletes than footballs players although both are usually in tremendous shape. I've played all the major sports and I would say that tennis is easily the most tiring one. Not only is it 3 or 4 hours depending on how many sets it goes but all the tear it puts on your body throughout the course of each point. It's especially tiring after a while because you have to be able to run full speed and then stop immediately to regain your balance and then hit the softest drop which is really tough.

roddick pisses me off so much, i can barely watch him play. He hits every fucking backhand short. Federer and other players jump all over it because he rarely puts it past the service line. Also, when he gets a big shot, he doesn't do enough with it. When he gets balls that sit up for him, he goes to his forehand and either hits with huge pace right at his opponent, or he goes for a corner but just tries to hit huge spin with little pace. It is so inneffective.
