Cyberbullying (and Formspring)

After the rise in popularity of a few facebook groups that were called something like 'ZOMG FORMSPRING QUESTION THAT MADE GIRL COMMIT SUICIDE LOLOLOL SO FUNNY!!!!!!' or something like that, I decided to look into cyberbullying a bit.

It seems Formspring in particular is responsible for a massive increase in recent cyberbullying activity, at least two people are known to have commited suicide because of Formspring related incidents!

I think this is crazy; I myself have never suffered from any true form of cyberbullying, I mean everyone including myself has made some form of derogatory comment towards someone who could do without such comments in forums and such, but some of the examples I have read of cyberbullying are totally sick, and to boot I think Formspring (and many other social networking sites for that matter) does actually make people so much more vulnerable to that type of shit.

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions of their own over this?

Although people get cyberbullied on formspring, it does not make people commit suicide. It may push someone over the edge, but a person would have already been planning suicide if one mean comment could cause them to go through with it. And as someone pointed out, these people have to realize that people are going to be mean if they are able to be anonymous. It's a sad thing, but one website can't be blamed for a person ending their own life.

Bullying has a lot to do with power. People who have been bullied, especially if from berth, feel very dis-empowered. And even if not from berth, we don't usually raise kids with high self esteem. Its true, the culture perpetuates these kids who think the media's portrayal of an ideal man and woman are gospal truth. Everyone should fit this cookie cutter image, and not just physically either. We should act like this, this is what your high school years should look like, and this is how you should turn out.This is all so very hopeless, and you may say "but its all mental". And I think that if you already have the genetic part down then its a lottery with the environmental factor. But I know its not just child abuse/trauma.

Although people get cyberbullied on formspring, it does not make people commit suicide. It may push someone over the edge, but a person would have already been planning suicide if one mean comment could cause them to go through with it. And as someone pointed out, these people have to realize that people are going to be mean if they are able to be anonymous. It's a sad thing, but one website can't be blamed for a person ending their own life.

After the rise in popularity of a few facebook groups that were called something like 'ZOMG FORMSPRING QUESTION THAT MADE GIRL COMMIT SUICIDE LOLOLOL SO FUNNY!!!!!!' or something like that, I decided to look into cyberbullying a bit.

It seems Formspring in particular is responsible for a massive increase in recent cyberbullying activity, at least two people are known to have commited suicide because of Formspring related incidents!

I think this is crazy; I myself have never suffered from any true form of cyberbullying, I mean everyone including myself has made some form of derogatory comment towards someone who could do without such comments in forums and such, but some of the examples I have read of cyberbullying are totally sick, and to boot I think Formspring (and many other social networking sites for that matter) does actually make people so much more vulnerable to that type of shit.

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions of their own over this?

I know Facebook is awful with cyberbullying. My sister was insulted all the time on there, for no specific reason. She had to close her account, to stop herself from getting depressed.
People can be assholes on the internet, because they can get away with it, unlike in real life, where you can retaliate in a violent way.
