View Full Version : What aspect of an album leave's its mark on time?

DanPiazza

Stay What You Are, Tell All Your Friends, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me. The list could go on forever. Yet so could the list of albums that went over like a fart in your sleep. Yet I may always remember Tell All Your Friends, but that won't make me remember New Again a year from now. Even if I enjoy two albums, often times one seems timeless, and the other a passing fad.

So my question for discussion is this: What makes an album timeless? What creates an album that will always be remembered?

Quality.

Quality.

I Think Where You Want to Be is a great album, but Tell All Your Friends is the memorable one. So quality is a necessity, but quality alone doesn't always cut it. I just think that's interesting.

I think its hard to pinpoint the exact aspects of an album that cause it to leave its mark in time. If we knew these aspects wouldn't everyone be writing albums that left its mark in time?

Touche. There's just always one album per band that's miles ahead of the rest for me (if they have any good albums that is...haha.) When people ask me my favorite albums i rarely listen two from the same band.

Nostalgic attachment?

Agreed.
I probably won't forget Country Grammar by Nelly or Astro Lounge by Smash Mouth, and that has nothing to do with musical quality.
Its also a big reason why I love Van Morrison so much.

Definitely the nostalgia factor mentioned earlier. Some of my favorite albums in the past have dropped off my standard rotation even if I like them more than the ones I still listen to from earlier, simply because those ones I still go back to have some memory attached to them. Example: Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate is one of my all-time favorite albums, yet I find myself rarely listening to it nowadays, whereas Transatlanticism was an album (equally good in its own right) that still receives standard rotation simply because listening to it brings about a flood of positive memories in me.

Interesting topic, I was just thinking about this. I believe it definitely a combination of amazing quality and nostalgia. If you have good memories associated with amazing music...it's great. This applies to pretty much all things. Right now I'm listening to Portugal. The Man's "Waiter"...and although I never thought it was my favorite album of theirs, it may be. I really love all their shit but my mind just conjures crack shit when I hear this right now.

Really? I'll have to respectfully disagree with that. Not being a dick (for once). I just think some of the greater albums (see: The Beatles) have lyrics that virtually mean nothing, but are still magnificent records that leave a huge mark on time

Pawan1993

I think its just influence. Albums are worth more over time if they help create something more. For example: The Get Up Kids are so famous because Something To Write Home About pretty much made most of the bands in the pop punk or pop rock scene. Sucks that none are as good as them though.
So yeah I think its influence and with some bands, lyrics. TDAG definitely shows this. Sometimes if you can relate to an album it hits you harder like say The Dangerous Summer's Reach For The Sun. But above all I think its influential music that are counted higher than others.

See, my favourite albums include mewithoutYou's Catch For Us The Foxes and Brother, Sister. I know taste is subjective, but for me they are two of the greatest albums I've heard. I won't listen to many things with lyrics that don't hit me in the face. I can see what you're saying though - at the end of the day it comes down to what really gets you going. I know I'll still be listening to those two albums in 20, 30 years... but will others? No.

As for The Beatles, I'd argue the delivery of vocals is pretty special which is why they are so incredible. But yes, the lyrics mean nothing. The music is creative and defined a generation though.

introduction
04/26/10, 06:01 AM
Bringing something new and good to the table. You can see that in all the great albums, from Pet Sounds, Sgt. Peppers, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, OK Computer, Funeral, even in the great scene albums like TAYF, and Deja.

I think that's what really grabs people, being able to remember this album and think, "How good was this when it first came out?" If it is truly a landmark album, then it will of course, spawn clones, and it should still be better than all of them. That's what sets them apart from every other album that's ever been released.

The ironic part is that he didn't even use an apostrophe in the most commonly misused place, "its/it's," he used it in a totally random place.

In my opinion at least. I want the album to go together and not act as a simple compiliation of the artist's songs.

tough question to answer but to me, the timeless albums find a way to speak to raw emotions that are present in human existence generation after generation...and by speak it doesn't have to be lyrically.

dark side of the moon is one of the best examples, i think (lyrically speaking anyway).

Yeah gotta tell you I don't see John Nolan once in that post. I don't believe an answer to a question is the same as restating it.

Although I definitely agree it's one of their best.

That's funny because I remember when I was always joking around with my old band in high school my drummer always said it was one of the funnest songs to play. Obviously not being a drummer I never noticed, but once I realized how cool of a groove it was I liked the song even more.
