I felt there needed to be a general place where fans of the genre can discuss upcoming releases/tours, bands, the state of the genre, etc. So whether you're more of a fan of The Starting Line than Title Fight, vice versa, or somewhere in between, feel free to discuss whatever's on your mind right here.

Pop punk needs to stray away from the neon aesthetic, that is all.

It was my favorite genre for a really long time. Although I don't listen to it as much anymore, I still have a soft spot for some good pop punk. Key word: good.

I've been a fan of pop punk for many years and I still listen to it frequently, particularly this time of the year. The only thing I'm tired of is the whole neon fad that's taken over the genre in the last few years, it's time for a change.

I think if you look hard enough, you can find plenty of pop punk bands fed up with the neon fad as well. Just look at the sort of bands that Run For Cover has(Transit, Man Overboard, Title Fight).

Keep It Goin' was so good. i'm so excited for more new stuff.
as for pop-punk, i have a few things to say:
1) The Crosstown Rivalry needs to come back.
2) All Time Low needs to make Put Up or Shut Up vol. II., and remove Nothing Personal from their catalogue.
3) I already miss The Years Gone By.
4) Freshman 15 is really really good.
5) betterLUCK sounds like NFG.
6) Carridale is also really really good.
that is all, bring it on.
I'm glad bands like The Wonder Years, Title Fight, etc. are seemingly starting to pop up all over the place.

they don't NEED to go, they just need to lessen it like for example Rise Or Die Trying had i think a breakdown for every song, if they were to use breakdowns they should just put one in 1 or a few songs just like what they did in Enemy of the World, makes them more memorable

yeah breakdowns in pop-punk NEEEEED to go, and this is coming from someone who loves Four Year StrongI wouldn't say they need to go, but they need to not be cheesy. And you don't always need to mosh. I have a questionable Milo tattoo.

been listening to 'em quite a bit lately. mmm nostalgia!
Oh man. I remember picking up How To Meet Girls and having it make me extremely happy. All of these kids today don't know how good they have it -- at least they can talk to girls and get dumped. Parry Gripp couldn't even get girls to talk to him! That's something I can relate to. Or could. Or can. Or something. (I would also like to note that I'm writing this gibberish while Rick Morranis makes out with Janine in Ghostbusters II).
This band played a fairly crucial role in my development as a teenager. No joke. "Lamer Than Lame" got me through some shit, as silly as that sounds.
I would also make a "sit on my face" reference re: Paramore, but I wouldn't want to offend anybody (lolz). And they wouldn't get the Courtney Love joke.

It's true. I was a junior (I think?) in high school when that record came out. And man, was it exactly what I needed to hear at the time. Catchy, self-depricating as fuck, and lots of random references to things I enjoyed (the Offspring, Star Wars). I'm not saying they sound the same as a song you bought ten years ago, but it's pop punk. It sounds like pop punk... It's not going to be revolutionary groundbreaking or sound like nothing else ever. These bands are awesome and all have really great albums out... Pop punk isn't going to be groundbreaking ever, so why do people use that excuse as not liking newer albums while saying they love older albums that aren't groundbreaking either.

Well, that's the difference. In 1998 when I heard Americana, it was the freshest thing in the world to me. Then I got Nimrod, Enema of The State, Hello Rockview, Pump Up The Valuum without knowing a thing about bands and albums that came before them because they weren't popular enough for me to know about them yet. Now after 10 years of listening to it, the new albums and bands sound incredibly stale, as I'm sure the albums I just listed sounded to people who listened to Descendents, Bad Religion and other bands from that era. It's not that the songs are bad as such, it's just that it's been done a million times before, and I've heard it a million times before. And for me, anybody who's getting into pop punk now, I don't see why they'd listen to someone like All Time Low or Set Your Goals when they could listen to Blink and New Found Glory, who do the same thing, but infinitely better.

i dig half hearted hero. pop punk is stuck in a sort of split these days.
i consider bands that play stuff that sounds similar to and influenced by the ramones pop punk (teenage bottlerocket, pretty much every band on fat), then there's stuff like set your goals and whatnot that are a little heavier or influenced more by new found glory/blink 182. neither are wrong in being categorized as such, it's just difficult to differentiate and really turns people off to the genre.
the more generic stuff like four year strong and all time low get labeled as pop punk and the kid that listens to and loves those bands won't give teenage bottlerocket or earlier stuff like the descendents a shot. it's depressing.

maybe it's not pop-punk but it's really catchy punk music, so please listen to the new Menzingers album

I honestly can't say there's anything from Pop Punk that is that good, any more. It's a shame, but I haven't heard anything I can say even resembles something I want to hear in years.
I'll be honest. I had to look up all but one of those to see who they were. I can not stand Set Your Goals and Four Year Strong. The Wonder Years singer is too whiny for my liking. I tried to like This Time Next Year but I just couldn't get into them at all. The Swellers album was okay I will say, but still, nothing that I haven't heard before. The first Broadway Calls album was a quite enjoyable album, but the latest one is crap.

Too many of those kids are stuck listening to what tv/friends/neon tells them is cool, and not enough time to what influenced most of what they listen to. I mean if they don't like it, that's fine, but generally like you said they won't even give it a shot.
I know a girl who recently told me Saves the Day "just rips off current day shitty emo bands. They are nothing special and Sum 41 is much better." Although I don't think she knows they were around before most of today's acts, or influenced, to some extent, most of those same bands.

the hate for four year strong is simple. a lot of it stems from their first record - coming out of nowhere and the way they seemed to throw unnecessarily heavy riffs and breakdowns into songs. enemy of the world changed that, but they haven't seemed to break that hate.

I don't see the point in having this same conversation again. Pop Punk is obviously never going to be a ground breaking genre, it is what it is. But when every new song sounds the same as a song I bought 9 years ago, but not as good, I can't say I'm all too interested in hearing these new bands. At least Coming Home was different.
This.
NFGs first 3 albums were amazing, ever since then they've just been good to me.
Additionally, I agree with everything you've said. All these new bands sound the exact same. I enjoyed RODT and Mutiny, but everything since then flopped. Pop punk bands, only translate well when the band themselves are inspired by hardcore. Fireworks, the wonder years, nfg, the movielife etc.
(waits for someone to mention fys or syg being influenced by hardcore)
Finally, The band Fight Fair is everything wrong with modern day pop punk
