Here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=06-08-29&c=3) are the albums coming out today. Let us know what you bought and what you thought. If it's not here, go ahead and post it in the replies. My (and probably Jason's as well) personal recommendation is to pick up Over It's (http://www.absolutepunk.net/overit) Step Outside Yourself this week.

alright, I finally heard all of Over It and I can say it's better than I thought it was gonna be, but it is still pretty bad. Think Against The Grain, Siren, Dishonor, Feels Like Affection and Too Much Information are pretty much the only listenable tracks.

It's like they want to be Yellowcard so bad now. I guess I'm alone in thinking this over here.

i agree with you. you arent alone on thinking this, its just the staff here is bent on making sure everyone thinks this is a better album than it really is. they act as if buying this CD is a charitable act or something and buying this CD, even though it is overrated, makes you a "good person" and gives the band what they deserve. i am sure tons of bands feel they deserve high record sales, not just over it, so to me thats not relevant. i guess we are the only people that still look at solely how good an album is when making the decision of whether or not to spend our money on it. all in all this isnt a great wk for cd's but is for dvds.

yeah, this band deserves to be famous because they changed their sound enough to actually have a chance at becoming famous? what kind of logic is that? ......and then everybody can say they knew them before they were all over TRL.

sounds like a plan. Think Against The Grain and Siren On The 101 are what I consider really good songs, but the rest is just average to terrible.

and i, completely disagree with you. you're completely blowing out of proportion how this website is promiting this CD. how do you see them saying you are a "good person" by buying this CD?

and on to your "deserving" aspect. imagine putting 8 years of your life, (you would have been 14), your heart soul and money into one thing, moving across a country, all for a band by the name of over it. after 8 long years of being basically nobodies except to a lucky few in the know, they finally have the distribution network and promotional network behind them to truly get their honest and truly genuine lyrics and music across to the world. props to them, they are some of the nicest guys in this business and truly deserve all success. it is a great album and i wouldn't change it for anything.

i hear panic! at the disco is on sale this week, maybe you should pick up that.

08/29/06, 10:09 AM
theres your answer.

So the whole absolutepunk.net staff and website think you are a good person if you buy over it because Tony replied on a forum saying so?

No.

He replied good person to the fact the individual bought 2 albums and is supporting the bands and the scene. Nothing at all to do with the fact he bought an over it CD.

Just Over It for me and I might pick up Summer Obsession since I really like what I have heard so far even though it does have a former member of GC. As for Over It being hyped they really like the album so they should hype it. Im sure everyone goes overboard on an album once and awhile but sometimes you just like it more than others.

No.

He replied good person to the fact the individual bought 2 albums and is supporting the bands and the scene. Nothing at all to do with the fact he bought an over it CD.Thank you. Of the albums coming out this week, I enjoy Over It the most. It just hits me in a way their previous stuff didn't necessarily. Much the Same is pretty good as well (and few have listened to them), so I told the person who said that they were a good person. As in, I agree with their purchases. If someone decided not to buy either of them, so what? I'm not going to tell them they suck for that.

yeah, this band deserves to be famous because they changed their sound enough to actually have a chance at becoming famous? what kind of logic is that? ......and then everybody can say they knew them before they were all over TRL.

sounds like a plan. Think Against The Grain and Siren On The 101 are what I consider really good songs, but the rest is just average to terrible.I disagree. They really didn't change their sound. They worked with the same producer (and I believe the same mixer) as Silverstrand and adding Ryan Ogren really didn't do a ton for the recorded product (as he wasn't a full-time member when they recorded it). Peter's become a stronger singer, and they did a lot more with guitar layering to get away from a sound that seemed a bit flat on their previous album. I'd call that natural musical progression, not "trying to be famous."

Street to Nowhere announced last night at their show at Slim's in SF (playing w/ The Format) that their album, Charmingly Awkward, was released today on Columbia. Congrats to those guys! They make me proud.I'm not a huge fan, but it's a shame Columbia just can't (or isn't) promoting some of the bands from our scene they've signed/released. The Rocket Summer's fans should be all over this one.

one of the cds was an over it cd dude. this is pointless arguing this with you because you are sounding just like them with the whole "buy the cd because they deserve it and are nice guys" argument. it makes it sound like a charity, like yall are holding up this sign with the band's name on it and their sad story of how hard they worked and i need to contribute my 15 bucks to "do my part in the scene" and reward them for their hard work.

i only buy CDs because they are good, not because the band deserves it because of hard work or they are nice. to me thats about as dumb as buying a CD because you think an artist/band is hot. They're nice guys and do a lot for their fans. I have yet to say that's the reason you should buy it (and I don't think it should be factor unless you've met them and that helped change your mind). This CD is a huge step up for a band that's been working hard and now has a chance to get some mainstream exposure. If you like them, I'd hope you'd support them. If you don't, that's fine. If you've never heard of them, we want to introduce you to the band. That's the idea of promotion, and at AP we get an opportunity to promote the albums we enjoy--not like magazines and such who are paid to promote things. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you like it, please support the band. If you haven't heard it, that's what the link is for :shrugs:.

It may be a natural progression and I guess some of the songs don't sound that different from Silverstrand, but the fact of the matter is, the cd is not that special (outside of a few tracks) and while I do think it will get them new fans, they are loosing some fans that enjoyed their more punk sound. If this is in fact the music they want to make, the more power to them, but there's something inside of me that thinks they did it for more fame.

and thanks for being civil about this whole thing Tony. I know Jason would have been calling people retards or something because they don't agree with him.

and thanks for being civil about this whole thing Tony. I know Jason would have been calling people retards or something because they don't agree with him.In talking to Nick a while back, he said there would probably be a lot of b-sides coming out, so perhaps you can look forward to those.

And no problem on the second part. Hell, I know that (for example) people who like a band like FFTL are probably not going to drop them and go listen to (for example) Over It. But if I can try to get people to expand their musical horizons to at least give other artists a chance, I think that's effective.

Over It has the ability to win a lot of the fans at shows and such, but you can't get those people through the doors until they've heard of the album. They won't hear of them if the word doesn't get out there (and that goes for 99.99% of bands out there). If we can help get the word out, I'm happy. Would I love Step Outside Yourself to have a killer first week? Of course. I enjoy the album and the band. It won't happen if no one promotes it though.

Not to sound heady, but CIWWAF pulled off record FBR sales their first week (even more than Panic). The AP vs. CIWWAF drama happened the week before or so, and it brought the threads involved over 150,000 views. I have a feeling the back and forth (from us to the band to the label all firing back and forth), that got the band a lot more exposure. Now, they may be killing that exposure with a subpar live show, but that's their deal. For them, the negative publicity served their purposes.

I don't think we can make an album sell 50k first week with us being the only place promoting it; but I think AP has a bigger impact than most people (including myself) realize.

I kind of went on a tangent there. Sorry.

So, I go to buy Step Outside Yourself, and my local FYE's been cleaned out of almost everything Over It. I settled for the "Outer Banks" disc, since they'll be in town next week, I'll just buy one that night.

i started to read all the posts and i just gave up. When it comes down to it. Over It is fucking amazing. Its a preference, you either like it, love it, dislike it or hate it. I havent heard one person say they hate over it, or they dislike them. Its all been "well its not what i expected" its "awesome, i love it" its "not as good as previous albums" and so on and so on. Ive been following Over It since negative progression records and became a huge fan, then became a good friend to all the boys. I dont support Over It just cause their nice guys and they deserve it, or because im in a band and i understand the struggle, instead, i support them for all of the above. They are fuckin amazing people, they make great music, they are constantly progressing themselves and their music (whether we like it or not) and everything they do is honest and genuinly sincere. Fuck, to me, that what musics about. Over It is going to keep making music whether this record goes platinum or sells a few thousand. Why?, because that is their MO. To make honest sincere music and play their hearts out regardless of what obsticals are. Some people get it, others dont. Its all good.

Over It, The Summer Obsession (I'm such a sucker for pop-punk shit) and Arrested Development Season 3.

I may check out the Roots, too. I'm normally not as into the hip-hop stuff, but I do like hip-hop where they actually play their own shit live. So maybe I'll check that out after hearing such good things.
