Clearly nobody learned anything from that other thread. "England runs the road."
I wouldn't even know right now. I never listen to the radio and I don't really watch tv anymore, so I'm kind of out of touch with who's getting the most airtime/video play.

xglassjawx
09/02/06, 01:05 PM
I personally don't like it a ton. A few of the songs are pretty nice though ie Can't Stop This, Don't Feel Right, Game Theory. Most of it bores me to death though.
Could not disagree more, its got to be Kanye at this point.
i agree. it used to be 50 but no longer.
mikeford
09/02/06, 01:34 PM

50 still is constantly leaking tracks almost everyday. Now there's that 50/Diddy beef over Mase. Lloyd Banks is about to drop, 50 mixtapes have been circulating, and Ludacris' album has a pretty nice buzz.
I would say Lil Jon over 50 Cent.

I wasn't gonna say anything, it's whatever. 50 Cent and Lil John and Luda, none of that is hip hop to me. But the title of the thread is "Running this RAP shit?"
so I didn't see a reason to split hairs.

hip hop is a lifestyle and culture... rap is the music of said culture. please do not act like hip hop and rap are different things. because that makes you stupid.
catchmealone
09/04/06, 08:54 PM
call me stupid, I honestly don't give a fuck, to me, there is a difference between hip hop and rap. it may not be the "correct" assumption, and I know that. But when I think of "rap" music, I think of lyrics about blunts, crunk, murder, etc...., and when I think hip hop, the lyrical content usually has more substance.

at the moment, I'd actually say Diddy.
In the last few months, he's dropped Yung Joc, Cassie, and now Danity Kane? Remember kiddies, R&B is hip-hop too. And no one expected Danity Kane to do as well as they are.
but seeing as how he runs Def Jam, I'd also say Jigga.

r&b is a totally different genre from hiphop
so are you gona tell me that keith sweat, luther vandross, brian mcknight are hiphop? cause there not
danity kane is wack there only famous because of mtv and puff daddy. if you ask me they didnt work for there fame they got it the easy way.
as i stated before hiphop is starting to have different sub genres aka crunk, screw, etc..
call me closed minded :which im not: but the music is changing and it is losing its roots. the

Blige, Chris Brown, Cassie, Keyshia Cole, Toni Braxton, and Beyonce aren't? They're Hip-Hop R&B. Yes, there IS such a genre. They use hip-hop beats, but instead of rapping, they sing.
And whether you liek them or not, Danity Kane sells like CRAZY. I happen to work at an "urban" record store, and we sold out at least 3 times. Maybe four. And OF COURSE they're doing so well because of MTV and Diddy. That was my whole effing point.
As for Jigga? Jay-Z is the president of Def Jam, the largest hip-hop label in the world. That's not running hip-hop? Okay, if you're on the Bizarro World.
As for 50, he was running a lot of it, but Yayo and Mobb Deep tanked, and there doesn't seem to be much buzz for Lloyd Banks.

Beyonce is hiphop? Are you just saying that because she's black? Shit son, timbaland doesn't make you hiphop, it makes you gay, and pop.
Mobb deep is past their prime, same goes for everyone else you listed. Llyod banks is just game though.

theres a lot of buzz for banks in NYC, for the record. he's movin a lot of mixtapes (money in the bank 4). something to be said for that. we'll see how he does chartwise but i think he'll at least do a mil.
as for the kid who didnt recognize the jay-z lyric i posted in 2 different threads... if you dont know anything about the rapper in question, you should probably keep your mouth shut regarding him and allegations of "biting"
and beyonce is a blend of hip hop and rnb, basically. following in the mold of mary j blige... singing over rap beats... now that i just read other dudes post, he already beat me to that point. haha oh well. at least someone else here knows what theyre talking about.

its one thing to bite 2 or 3 widely known lyrics from well known mc's but when you go and steal enough for someone to make a 7 min track of how much you bit then thats just ridiculous
and if you use his phrase of "makeing it better" or how ever he stated it then thats just lame too, your saying its okay to bite the same exact lyrics but just add a different beat to it and throw your name in there? how retarded thats just as stupid as them screw guys stealing beats slowing them down and calling them there own

you really have no idea what you're talking about. Hip-hop is a lifestyle. a culture. It's also the heart of the music. The way the beat hits, the melody, the harmonies, Etc. Rap/R&B are just the lyrics. There is Soul/R&B, and Hip-Hop/R&B. Much like there is Rock/Rap and Hip-Hop/Rap. Beyonce's songs have a hip-hop flavor to them, while someone like Anthony Hamilton or Leela James...well..don't.
And I don't really care about Jay-Z lyrically, or at least, it wasn't part of my argument. He runs the biggest label in hip-hop, so he runs hip-hop. Diddy is also running one of the hottest labels in hip-hop music, which is why I think 50 is getting at him.
How can he thank Diddy for helping get Ma$e over to G-Unit a year ago to that diss? 50 knows who's on top, and he wants to stay relevant. It's simple business. It's the same reason he recorded "How To Rob" all those years ago.
Kid, I hate to get all snooty, but I happen to work full-time in a record store(for almsot two years, no less) thats demographic is hip-hop and latin. a third of my week revolves around this stuff. Who said that quote again? Does it really matter? Hip-hop is sure as hell a lifestyle but when it's used in terms of music, it's not a singing girl talking about being a soulsurvivor or being crazy in love.
Also, if we are going by the lifestyle then fuck that. Beyonce was always well off, what does she know about the streets? She never came from the hood.
And I don't really care about Jay-Z lyrically, or at least, it wasn't part of my argument. He runs the biggest label in hip-hop, so he runs hip-hop. How can you compare those people to beyonce? Beyonce sings, she doesn't have a flow. I don't get how the fuck you can group all these people together with her. Is it because she's black?*sigh* did I COMPARE her to them? No. I said she collaborated with them. Much like R&B singers like Mary J. Blige(for example, the Touch It remix) Akon(uh....pretty much any single of his), Chris Brown(Run it! with Juelz Santana or Gimme That Feat. Lil Wayne), Brandy(Top of The World with Mase), etc. Etc.
And no it's not because she's black. WHY do you keep bringing up the race card?
Who said that quote again? Does it really matter? Hip-hop is sure as hell a lifestyle but when it's used in terms of music, it's not a singing girl talking about being a soulsurvivor or being crazy in love.
Also, if we are going by the lifestyle then fuck that. Beyonce was always well off, what does she know about the streets? She never came from the hood.Only those in "the streets" can only be about hip-hop? Kanye West grew up in a middle class family too. But, according to at least 3 people, he's "running hip-hop". T-Pain is a former rapper, who became an R&B singer. He grew up in the streets, does that mean he's still hip-hop? Or not?
What does flow have to do with anything? If flow had anything to do with hip-hop, half of the shitty ass rappers out there wouldn't be hip-hop.
Hip-Hop fucking started as music without vocals. The DJs were the original hip-hoppers. Rappers were added to hip-hop music later on. And even today, the focus is on the beats. As I've said, hip-hop is the style of music, rap is lyricism. So is R&B.
If that's the criteria for "running the shit" russel simmons is much more credible than fucking gay-z. Does Russell Simmons do ANYTHING culturally relevant anymore besides appear on Run's House occasionally? Um...does Russell Simmons have the biggest sellers in hip-hop on his label? NO. He sold Def Jam to Island Records almost ten years ago. Can you name ONE hip-hop artist on Russell Simmons Music Group?
Oh fuck off. The demographic changes in location dumb ass.and? Oh yeah, that was my point. The demo I deal with is hip-hop. That's right. Huh.
I seriously do NOT GET why you people want to shove hip-hop in this little box and not let it be anything else. Music grows over time. It evolves, it's changes. It evolved to include R&B in the mid 80's to early 90's. Get over it.
