View Full Version : Female Punk Vocalists

The Owl

I've searched the threads and only found this topic on the alternative section and that didn't quite satisfy my question. I'm a huge fan of Xray Spex, X, The Slits, The Avengers, The Plasmatics, etc. The pissed off and Johnny Rotten-esque females vocals are preferrable to me and I was wondering if you cats knew of any other punk rock groups that featured female vocalists of this nature.

thanks in advance.

Tsunami Bomb is not punk, but they are all I can think of besides the Distillers.

Joan Jett? Some kids would consider punk...I'd consider her shit.

Joan Jett is not shit. Hardly. She is what inspired most of the whole riot grrls and everything. Name any female punk vocalist, and they have been influenced by Joan Jett in some way, guaranteed.

I have always enjoyed the Go-Go's (their early stuff is new wave punk) and Debbie Harry of Blondie (when she was hot and a good singer). Both of those bands took new wave punk and made it mainstream, but had powerful chops behind them.

I'm not into many bands that are fronted by females but the few that I listen to are Tsunami Bomb, Dresden Dolls, Lacuna Coil, and Walls of Jericho (obviously not all punk bands but I'm just stating them anyways).

I guess Bikini Kill and Le Tigre are considered "riot grrl" or whatever, but I think anything Kathleen Hannah did was fantastic. Also, the Eyeliners, the Gits, Civet, Seven Year Bitch and L7 and someone mentioned Sleater-Kinney...also not considered "punk" i guess but completly underrated and over-looked.

Really, I'd consider them to be a definite hardcore-punk band, one of the finest to be exact.

I'd say Jemina Pearl of Be Your Own Pet has a great punk rock voice...loud, angry, a little hysterical even. She's punk through and through. And I like the band Civet, too. The lead singer's voice is like gravel.

Nausea, Antischism, To what End?, Ballast, Witch Hunt, Kill the man Who Questions, Lebenden Toten, DOTFUCKINGCOM, Love Life, Jaks, Get Hustle, Pre, Finally Punk, Aids Wolf, Erase Errata, Hiretsukan, Fire Party, Bratmobile, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, I Object, Screaming Females, RVIVR, Detestation, Petnaesti Ceh, God's America, Rape Revenge, Punch, Bikini Kill, 45 Grave, Anti-product, Detonate, Sleater-Kinney, Appalachian Terror Unit, Harum Scarum.

that's a longer list than I initially set out to write, but they are all worth a listen or two. it ranges from noise to hardcore, crust to new wave etc. etc. so go in with an open mind! enjoy!!
