So, I'm nearing 20 and I find that the majority of my friends from high school have become periodic smokers. Most do it leisurely but there are the select few who've made it habitual. I choose not to smoke simply cause I see no reason to do it...I have smoked cloves and done hookah in the past and I don't get the relaxation that others get from it. This might have to do with me not living with any smokers or anything I dunno. I don't see why it so suddenly happened tho in the past year or so...have any of you noticed this? Is it worth the destruction to be trendy?

I've smoked the hookah, cigarrettes, cigars, and pot. I have smoked all of them at least twice, but it never grew on me.

Not worth the money if you ask me.

I see a lot of little high school kids smoke, and I'm like..what are you smoking for!? - it stunts the growth, and they've got nothing to stress about

I don't get why people become like regular smokers, but on the weekends when im out drinking I like to have maybe like 5 or so cigarettes a night, I don't know why really, it's just a way more enjoyable thing when you're wrecked. I do smoke cigs sober from time to time but mostly just to socialize.

i was in your place once, theyre addictive. just like a smoker keeps smoking more to be satisfied. your gonna get hooked. im assuming you just bum ciggaretts from your firends when you drink so eventually your gonna buy a pack for yourself, just for when your drinking. that will last a couple of weeks maybe then that pack will be burning a hole in your pocket on breaks during classes, itll be just a social thing. its all downhill from there

true that. It sucks tho, I love going to bars (even tho I don't drink) and cafes with friends...and ur not cool there unless you're smoking. As a non smoker and as an asthmatic it sucks because you face the risks they face and it's not ur choice.

but wouldn't like...a nap or a bath do the same thing? Ya I know u can't do those in the middle of the day...but if u can take a break to smoke up, u can probably find some sort of alternative that'll do the same...you just might not be cool for doing it.

word. You say this as a smoker. Did you find cigarettes doing the same thing for you when you just started? I always thought that when people said smoking calms em down...biologically that's they're nicotine addiction being fulfilled...but then I hear a lot of non-addicts saying it and I wonder if they're saying it just cause everyone else does...are they liars...or does it really calm ur nerves without being addicted?

when i first started smoking i noticed the calming effects a lot more actually. sometimes if i take a big drag especially if i havent smoked a ciggarette all day i get a little light headed and feel calm. its the nicotine doing something and if i wasnt ready to pass out id look it up but i definetly doesnt have to do with the addiction that i can tell. who knows tho.

tobacco is a stimulant, this calming effect in habitual smokers is the addiction, and restlessness, being satified. so richter your right. the light headedness is from the stimulant but it does have a calming effect. so there you go haha

I started smoking cigarettes when I was 17 and on my own I tend to be a nuerotic individual and having a cigarette gives me something else to concentrate on which helps with me not being so crazy.

I've been trying to slow down recently and I go through spurts where I'll smoke over a pack at a party and then not get another one for a few days then something will happen that will make me nervous or angry and then I get the craving for one.

........yeah, I do buy packs all the time, and I've been smoking at the same rate for like 5 years or so, so I'm not too worried about it.

i should probably add that i smoke weed pretty much daily, so that might be why i don't feel as much of an urge to smoke cigarettes all the time.

Cancer sticks? Barf me. I've never smoked and never will.

Anyway, one of my friends is a smoker and his mom told him that if he doesn't smoke for a year, she'll get him 2 airplane tickets to anywhere in the world..... In a couple months it would've been a year... but he started smoking again last month, haha. Totally gave up. He said it was nice to not smoke though...

I don't smoke, nor have I ever tried but as much as I hate to admit it (because I despise smoking a lot), if I happen to be worrying about something or something intense is on my mind (school, whatever) and someone happens to be smoking next to me and I smell it, I do notice that it makes me feel a bit better. But I would rather have something stressing me for a day than have lung cancer that'll end up killing me, so that's why I wouldn't do it.

Would people smoke if they only smoked in like their room or something? Like you never could smoke in public only in your room so no one can see you do it. I've talked to a few people about this and they said smoking in front of others or having others see you do it makes them wanna do it more. I dunno if what I said even makes sense, but that is what they say.

I dunno if that's always true. I bought a pack in May, and have only smoked like 3 cigarettes since then. Just coz I have it doesn't mean I wanna smoke it, but I see how that could happen.

because you don't just look at cigarettes and go "well, I'm addicted"...there's gotta be something that stimulates them to start and honestly...the two reasons I hear frequently are "it's what everyone else here is doing" and "my friends do it".

that's an interesting perspective...it's much like drinking alcohol...people say that when you notice a friend drinking alone in his room or drinking by himself...that's when it's a problem. I would think the same with cigarettes...if u smoke when no one is around, you're prob. addicted. I think there's a certain level of peer pressure and it's sad that it occurs even at this age.

That's not entirely true. I'm 23 and sometimes I'll enjoy a beer or two by myself at home. It's relaxing and I enjoy the taste. Now if someone was getting trashed by themself then that would be a different story. It's all about moderation.

Cigarettes are fucking foul. I've recently started seeing a girl that smokes and every time I kiss her I can taste it....Such a big turn off.

dude, there is no way you can categorize addiction to nicotene based solely on how many people are around when you light up. addiction can really ONLY be diagnosed by how soon one physically NEEDS a cigarette following the previous one.

ohh word. Well I mean, do you drink the beer every day? Once it becomes recurring and more than "just a beer" then it can be a problem...same goes for smoking I mean...my opinion is just that once it stops being a social thing, that might mean it's because of a physical desire for it...that's addiction.

of course. I'm not saying that's why. I'd say these people are addicted if they were put in a scenario where they couldn't smoke and that caused them withdrawal symptoms. But, how can I possibly do that? For one friend to see if another friend is addicted or becoming addicted...I base it on how often they need cigarettes and in what situation.

I started smoking about a year and a half ago during Spring Break of 05. The reason I started and the only reason I still do smoke is because it's a good way to introspect. I smoke at parties with friends, I'll smoke driving occasionally, but I make sure to keep it under like 6 or 7 cigarettes a day. I smoke like every day, but usually the only time I smoke is late at night outside my house by myself, call it whatever you want, but the reasoning for it makes sense to me. It is so easy for me to figure out problems or issues when I'm outside by myself smoking a cigarette or two. I might have a spat with a girlfriend or something really meaningless or there might be something I'm really looking forward to the next day and when I go outside and smoke, there's no distraction from whatever I'm thinking about (tv, music, any background noise). I just sit, relax with a cigarette danglng from my lips or fingersd and 9 times out of 10 I'll completely clear my head and figure out exactly what I want to do or what I'm going to do. I know I could easily just sit out there and not smoke, but I'm not one to be able to do that without doing something. I hate saying this because it sounds awful, but I have cigarettes to thank for turning me from a pessimist to an optimist. I used to be really anxious about things and worry way too much, but after I started smoking, all of that went away. It's hard to explain without sounding like a total douche, but yeah, basically smoking equaled composure for me.
