xanax stops anxiety in its tracks. Its not really for long term use tho, as both long term benzo ans alcohol use have been shown to actally keep anxiety disorders going and make them worse. Klonpopins nice as well and a little smoother. valium is good as wel laltho ive never had it. Kava is a nice herbal alternative that is worth looking into for some people. Id recommend ordering the powder from a reputabile online source. Don't pay attention to liver damage claims , as they have pretty much been dis proven. Side effects of benzos include short term memory loss and possible addiction. They are powerful drugs but do great things

Yeah, you sort of have to give us more information. Is it acute or chronic? Is it specific situations that incite anxiety, or would you say it's more general--constant worrying and/or feelings of anxiousness?

Like has been mentioned, benzodiazepines are more for acute anxiety, whereas general anxiety is often helped by SSRI's or newer SNRI's. The most helpful course of action, however, has been proven to be a combination of cognitive/behavioral therapy and medication.

Now go see a doctor.

I have bad anxiety, and recently stopped taking Lexipro (safely).

The feeling when it first started working (about a week after I started taking it) was insane. It's so much different, it's a whole new level of calm I had never imagined before. So yes, I think it was awesome and if it gets bad I'll go back on it. I was on it almost 2 years, and the only time I had an issue was when I left my tablets home for a weekend while I was away it gave me pretty bad flu/fever symptoms but apparnetly that type of stuff is incredibly rare unless you're on it for over a year or so.

I'd definitely recommend it if you actually have anxiety, definitely do it through a doctor. They'll be able to monitor its behaviour much better than you will.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: mine is chronic, I've had it my entire life and it only became an issue about 3 years ago. And I did see a psych as well. The pills weren't the only thing that helped.

i had an episode where i was taking prescribed adderall while at college for a few years and when i abrubltly stopped. i went into a full blown panic mode where my heart was racing and i felt like i was going to die. i couldn't think straight and everything felt so sureal and i my doctor wanted to put me on zoloft but i didn't want to be on an anti depressent and chemicaly alter my brain chemistry so i rode it out. it was hell and i went from 160 to 125 pounds and when i got back to school i eventually found everything went away on its own and i am great now but i did take some xanax that really helped calm me down. i really think i ended up like that from the adderall withdrawl but even now i still have some post tramatic stress where i get anxious in movie theaters because when i ended up going to the hospital i had to leave the movie theater i was in at the time.

I must say, I'm getting really fucking tired of posters here not being able to properly punctuate sentences, or not being able to write a sentence that isn't 5 lines long that is a pain in the ass to read and understand but could actually be broken up which would be cool but is apparently too hard to do for some people or like when. A sentence suddenly stops when it should actually be leading into the next sentence like what I just did.

Untie the balloons from around my neck and ground me
I'm just a racehorse on the track
Send me back to the glue factory
Always thought I'd float away
And never come back
But I've got enough miles on my car
To fly the boys home on my own

I think what would be best is trying cognitive behavior therapy and/or cutting caffeine, firstly. (I don't know anything about how caffeinated you are, but cutting that helped me a ton. Also, I don't know what you've tried and what has or hasn't worked for you.)
If you do those things for a while and it still doesn't work, then look into the meds. I decided against medication because I was afraid once I was off of them, it would get worse than before and I'd just have to go back on again.

I have fucking terrible anxiety and have been rushed to the hospital/made trips to the ER, go to the shrink, etc etc, and I've been perscribed to Valium and Xanax for years, but only take it when I absolutely have to. I'd rather try to tough it out myself. If you don't absolutely need anything, just try going for a run, or working out. A hard workout/excersize is great for mental stress. Also, anything can be addictive if you put it into an irresponsible persons hands, or someone with an addictive personality. I don't think thats really a fair arguement. I'd also say that Xanax 1MG really do help. If your having an attack or can't breathe or something, you'll feel better in 15 minutes.

Edit: You could also try fasting. I tried on tour, and went like 2 days, but that shit is hard.

I second the notion of cutting out caffeine, it definitely sucks because they don't make caffeine free Dr. Pepper, and it's hard to find the Pepsi caffeine free 20oz bottles haha, but hey you gotta make some sacrifices. At least I still get to drink some root-beers.

I was on a pretty high dose of Zoloft for a while for anxiety, depression, and mild OCD (all three things strongly related to anxiety, obviously). It definitely calmed the anxiety and the symptoms, but it was a little too much. It had more of a numbing effect, and seemed to deteriorate my body and mind's appropriate sense of responsibility along with the over-the-top and irrational sense of responsibility that comes with anxiety. Basically, I started forgetting things left and right, had a hard time waking up to be on time for work, and other similar problems. We do have a natural, healthy sense of urgency or stress in our bodies that keeps us alert and tells our bodies to be awake or to remember something important (which can also turn negative and unhealthy when it becomes excessive worry and fear), and this high dose of Zoloft seemed to deteriorate that essential urgency guide. Everything becomes kind of bland and you lose motivation.

Different people react to each drug differently. You really have to talk to the appropriate type of doctor for any kind of mental issue and they will slowly put you on whatever drug they think is best, to find out the symptoms and if it helps you. I was on a pretty high dose of Zoloft because that it often what they do for OCD. My girlfriend also has severe OCD and she was on the same thing (actually a lower dose). She had the same experience of pretty much turning into a bland puddle of nothing.

I'm a psych major, and what I've learned is that anti-anxiety meds can be effective short term. However, they are addictive and once you get off them, your anxiety will probably come back. It's usually better to try antidepressants to treat anxiety first. However, CBT is probably a better initial route to go than messing with drugs.

If benzodiazephines can't fix it, nothing can.

First off, as many others have said, you should really go talk to a doctor. I started having really bad anxiety issues about 4 years ago, and it runs rampant in my family. At first I was prescribed Xanax and while it worked when I took it, it had no long term affect on the anxiety...and it is highly addictive. I switched off of that and onto a drug called Remeron. That worked for about a year or so and then I noticed my anxiety started getting worse. Tried Paxil for a few days and it made me feel miserable, so my doctor switched me over to Celexa and my experience has been a lot better since.

Again, in short, talk to your doctor.

It is a general constant kind
xanax stops anxiety in its tracks. Its not really for long term use tho, as both long term benzo ans alcohol use have been shown to actally keep anxiety disorders going and make them worse. When I took xanax, it pretty much incapacitated me. It helped anxiety in the same sense that alcohol helps anxiety, but doesn't really help in the long term. In my experience, Cognitive-Behavioral therapy is the only way to change anxiety-producing thoughts and actions. It takes awhile to really help, but noticeable change occurs relatively quickly. Medicine is useful in the short-term, especially in reducing panic attacks, but I would definitely recommend therapy for long-term change.

You probably have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and you will more than likely benefit from going on an anti depressant and spending a lot of time with a solid psychologist. Something like Xanax, Klonopin, Valium would take the edge off, but that stuff is addictive as hell. Sometimes it is necessary. Your doctor will figure out what is best for your situation.

I have severe anxiety and panic disorder and go to therapy + take meds so you can PM me or something if you need.

I think resorting to pills is a bad idea. They come with these horrible side effects. And in some cases do more damage.

Have you already looked into any holistic solutions?

framebyframe
05/06/10, 02:19 PM
I'm on citalopram (celexa) and have been on it for 2 or 3 years now. I've had to constantly up the dosage though because it hasn't really been working and my doctor says I should stick with it anyway. I haven't had any side effects except I sometimes feel sick if I forget to take it. I take ativan when I'm really anxious and it works great for that but unfortunately it makes me very confused and I sometimes feel sick from it so I don't take it a lot. The side effects really depend on the person though.
I'm starting to exercise a lot now because I recently had to quit my job due of anxiety, and I must say it is working wonders and you should give that a try. But really the only thing to do is to talk to your doctor about it and they will tell you what you should be taking.
