View Full Version : Who's the best musician? Battle of the musicians..

Robin.
05/04/10, 05:09 PM
As you guys saw there are polls asking who is the best musician between two members of a band or different bands. I'm doing a musicians tournament with 64 musicians, 32 vs 32, one on one battles, compared both within instruments skills, songwriting skills, respect and every shit you guys want to compare.

I divided them into 4 groups (randomly) and each two days I will be posting 1 battle from each group.

The musician who gets more votes win, as simple as that.

I started out with John Lennon vs Paul McCartney so whoever wins between them goes to the next round.

The groups are:

GROUP 1:

John Lennon vs Paul McCartney (The Beatles)

David Gilmour vs Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)

Mick Jagger vs Keith Richards (The Rolling Stones)

Morrisey (The Smiths) vs Robert Smith (The Cure)

Axl Rose vs Slash (Guns N' Roses)

Roger Daltrey (The Who) vs Jim Morrison (The Doors)

Freddie Mercury vs David Bowie

Buddy Holly vs Frank Sinatra

GROUP 2:

Thom Yorke (Radiohead) vs Matthew Bellamy (Muse)

Joey Ramone (The Ramones) vs Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols)

Mark Hoppus vs Tom DeLonge (Blink-182)

Billy Armstrong (Green Day) vs Greg Graffin (Bad Religion)

Liam Gallagher vs Noel Gallagher (Oasis)

Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) vs Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)

Maja Ivarsson (The Sounds) vs Emily Haines (Metric)

Bono (U2) vs Michael Stipe (R.E.M.)

GROUP 3:

Michael Jackson vs Elvis Presley

Tupac vs Notorious B.I.G.

Jesse Lacey (Brand New) vs Adam Lazzarra (Taking Back Sunday)

Frank Zappa vs. Johnny Cash

Jack White (The White Stripes) vs Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the Machine)

Eric Clapton vs George Harrison (The Beatles)

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk) vs Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT)

Dave Matthews vs John Mayer

GROUP 4:

Paul Stanley vs Gene Simmons (Kiss)

Elvis Costello vs Bruce Springsteen

Bon Scott vs Angus Young (AC/DC)

Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) vs James Hetfield (Metallica)

Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) vs Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)

Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) vs Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)

Eddie Van Halen vs Jimi Hendrix

Lou Reed (The Velvet Underground) vs Black Francis (Pixies)

The winners of each group will battle each other and then move to the next round.

What do you guys think?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I really think this is a cool idea, however it's sort of easy to tell who will make it to the finals (Thom Yorke, Jesse Lacey, either John or Paul).

Maybe, but the next round will be based on number of votes, so maybe there'll be a soon Thom Yorke vs Jesse Lacey to complicate things out.

The actual poll will probably end up being close, but in reality, MGMT isn't even in the same stratosphere as Daft Punk, both in terms of talent and accomplishments.

I'd love to see Morrissey or Freddie Mercury win this, but Lennon's going to win.

These are a fun idea, especially when people share their thoughts on the topic. But unfortunately it always ends up being thousands of random votes for Brand New, regardless of who they're up against, for no reason of justification.

But what can you do haha. Good idea mate. I'm looking forward to a few of those discussions.

it seems like most people are complaining about the artists you chose and how you put them against each other. maybe you should have a nominations system of some sort? and then randomize the artists into their groups. at this point, the idea's great but the execution sucks.

Thought it would have been Jesse Lacey vs. John Nolan though.

theguy77
05/07/10, 07:36 PM
What do you mean by that?

being totally honest, i just feel like the artists you chose were all the cliche` "iconic" musicians, and i feel like that doesn't necessarily represent the best musicians/artists and that plenty of them get more praise than they deserve. for example, there are way better (not to mention much more authentic) figures in modern "punk" music than billie joe armstrong, slash is an overrated guitarist just because he was in a popular classic rock band and has a unique "image", etc. this doesn't really represent the best musicians/artists, just the biggest ones in popular culture. i mean, it's almost like VH1 picked the artists for these polls

theguy77
05/07/10, 08:03 PM
this also fails to account for the fact that lead guitarists and lead singers are not the only good musicians. even if we're just talking about a rock/pop music context, where only rock instruments are featured, i'd choose victor wooten or buddy rich over almost all of these people. i can understand, however, feeling like way more people will vote for a frontman over someone who plays an instrument that has less of a lead role, and in that sense it might be pointless to include them.

don't get mad at the guy, i do think at least that it's good that he's doing something to inspire discussion on these boards because no one else is really doing that. i mean, thats why im participating in some of these poll threads anyway despite the fact that he could have dug a little bit deeper when coming up with the artists in question.
