View Full Version : Ugh, another Wisdom Teeth thread...

I know, and I apologize in advance. Just curious though, I've never been put under before and I'm wondering whether listening to music would be a cool experience, or mess with my head...
Also, for people who have had them out, did the Dr freak anyone out at the consultation or was it just mine? He said mine are the hardest type to take out (i forget the type).. and my roots are rounded? He mentioned something about the possibility permanent damange because mine are so close to the nerve...?
I couldn't really get a feel for whether this is his standard warning, or he was personalizing it for me because mine are a dangerous situation.

They have never said that to me. It sounds like it could be really dangerous. Listen to loads of deathmetal because it will calm you down.
If you go under, it's like you blink your eyes and it's over. You wake up a little groggy and will probably be like wtf, it's already done? Music would be sorta pointless.
Personally, I wish I would have picked the gas, just because it makes you feel craaazy. Oh and the hydrocodone you'll probably get afterward is a sweet deal.
Half my bottom lip was numb for like a month following the operation, but it eventually went away.

That's what I kind of figured as far as music goes.. wouldn't even remember listening to it..
I'd be fine with the whole bottom lip being numb for a month thing, but if it's permanent i'm going to pretty friggin pissed.

I wouldn't be worried. They have to say that stuff to you in the consult as part of informed consent--basically to cover their ass.
It's pretty rare that you'll experience any permanent numbness or anything.

I was awake for the whole thing and they only numbed the areas that they needed. Sure it hurt like hell at the time they injected me (not a fan of needles), but loads less than it did if I'd not got them taken out.
As for rounded roots, I had that exact thing on my bottom teeth. It wasn't a problem, just took longer. They had to cut into my gums and drill them out. Sounds horrible, but I couldn't feel a thing.
You'll be fine.

Awesome man thanks, yeah I mean I'm not really freaking out about it or anything.. it's just the whole "permanant damage" disclaimer threw me for a loop..
I was actually looking forward to being put under, some time off work, etc.. until he mentioned how close the nerve was and got my a little worried

maybe he said they are impacted? luckily none of mine were, i got gas for 20 minutes then he shot me up with something and took em out in like 5 minutes. it only slightly hurt for like an hour when the sedatives were wearing off then i just popped a painkiller with some advil and i was eating wendys that night
I actually had 6 wisdom teeth removed (for real, extra set on top). There's really no point in listening to music beforehand because you're pretty much out in 20 seconds anyways. And everyone gets worried about their wisdom teeth but 99% of people are fine within 2 weeks.
Nothing to worry about.

I didn't get put under (just went with laughing gas since it was cheaper) and I didn't take any of my pain meds they gave me afterwards. It wasn't really that bad.
And sorry to had horror to the story, but when they were taking mine out, the numbing shots started to wear off on me. I was high from the laughing gas and when they asked me if i needed more numbing shots i told them "no" even though in my head i was screaming. But again, it really wasn't that bad. It hurt but it wasn't agonizing or anything. I wouldn't worry about anything at all because even this seemingly bad situation, it wasn't much of a bother.
I have two recommendations for you:
1. Get your vicodin, do not use it, empty the bottle, get it refilled. Enjoy.
2. Makeout. It helps free up your muscles and keeps you from getting sore (and hurting). Just make sure you're still not a bleeding mess when you do it, because I doubt your lady friend would appreciate that much.

Everybody on my dads side of the family has bad wisdom teeth, especially my dad, this seriously scares the shit out of me.
I actually watched a dentist cut out one of his wisdom teeth, i'm not sure if i would be able to go through this, even though everyone says you can't feel anything.

I got mine taken out last May. Took 5 days to be able to eat solid food. Not much pain.

My dentists told me that mine are starting to come in on the bottom but not on the top. I can feel it on the right side and some days it hurts worse than others to the point where it's hard to chew on the right side of my mouth. I am gonna , hopefully , get them out before I go to college.

They probably just have to warn so you can't sue them, If they mess up the nerve you could lose your sense of taste :)

Just cross your fingers and hope you don't get dry sockets. If that happens, no amount of Vicodin will help you. And after you see the dentist again, you'll have to walk around for a week with clove oil-soaked strips in your empty sockets, which will make everything taste like cloves. Also Vicodin made me nauseous.
No I did not have a good wisdom teeth experience.
(I had a different surgery last August though and they gave me Percocet, which put me in an awesome mood and for some reason made me want to listen to nothing but Blue Öyster Cult. True story.)

I haven't had mine out yet, but I'm terrified. Not only do I hate needles, but I hate the dentist...All 4 of mine are coming in, and they're starting to hurt a little. :/

I really, really want mine to come in (don't know why, but I'm looking forward to it). However, I would not be the least bit surprised if they had to come out - my teeth have been an orthodontic nightmare.

I haven't gotten mine out doctor said i didn't have to. But most of my friends said they were eating some type of fast food that same day. Some said it hurt way too much to eat. I guess its just your tolerance to pain.
this girl at my work just had all four of her wisdom teeth removed. she brought them in today

i had all 4 of mine pulled out about 4 years ago. 2 of them were still compacted or something? (still completely covered by my gums) i didnt get put completely out, they just numbed my mouth and gassed me. it was kinda cool though, because i remember everything the surgeon and my dad were talking about while she was pulling my teeth out... yea, she was talking to my dad while she was doing it, nbd or anything haha.
once you get feeling in your mouth again its gonna hurt, real bad. hopefully you get some good drugs. whatever you do, dont drink through a straw until they tell you to. you definitely dont want to get dry socket, cause that shit suxxx
oh yea, i was eating cheeseburgers in less than a week. so hopefully you heal fast and dont have to eat mac&cheese and pudding for longer than that

Even though I'm 23, my wisdom teeth are still coming through. I am worried that when they eventually do come through, they'll knock the rest of my teeth ski-wiff. Wonky wonky :/

The actual procedure was... amazing. I had laughing gas, and an IV. It took 45 minutes total, but it felt like 5 at most. I was feeling good for about 15 minutes after they finished, then the nausea began. The nausea was the only thing that really bothered me. I'd advise you to take the pain pills as soon as you can get them so you can sleep away the pain. The first day is the worst.

I don't see why people worry about this at all. Get vicodin and take it, and you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
Unfortunately when I got mine out, they didn't give me vicodin and gave me extra-strength ibuprofen instead. It was some of the worst pain of my life for 3 days until i got some of my friend's vicodin, but once I got that it was nothing. So be sure to get vicodin
I had my bottom two taken out, they were lying flat under the gum and each tooth had to be broken into 4 pieces. After hearing the surgeon crack the teeth inside my mouth, the strangest feeling was the tooth parts being taken out, I didn't feel any pain thanks to the anesthetic, but I could feel the bony parts sliding out of my jaw. I have since reassembled them with model glue and they're sitting in my bedside table :P
The most ridiculous/amusing part was the swelling. After 4 hours I thought I'd be fine, and them BAM massive cheeks and the most ferocious pain. I also ended up with some bruising on my cheeks, which made no sense to me, since the wound was on the inside of my mouth.
Just make sure you don't have a big social event coming up.
Oh - and DO remember to use the syringe to rinse out the gums once they start healing. I had the most rancid breath and taste in my mouth and had no idea why, but then I finally rinsed the area and dislodged a huge amount of old sutures/food particles, caught in the space where my teeth used to be.

I got mine out last year during Spring Break. I got the gas and was pretty much out in like 30 seconds or so. Woke up feeling weird as fuck. I didn't really have any pain after though. I did take some pain pills, but even if I didn't take them for a good amount of time, I didn't have that much mouth pain.

Did your swelling go down the next day? I get my wisdom teeth taken out tomorrow, and Friday I have pictures for cross country haha...I really hope I don't swell too badly.

Mine were the same way, but it was a great experience. If I could get them taken out all over again, I'd do it. Being put under has to be the best feeling I've ever had, as well as the Vicodin.

I had terrible swelling for a week after I got mine out. My sister had almost NO swelling. It's different for everyone, just remember the ice packs.

Mine lasted several days, and then I got bruises on my jaw. It was crazy.
It all depends on where your teeth are. The deeper they are, the more work has to go into extracting them, so there's more damage, so there's more swelling. Mine were flat under the gum so they had to peel back the gum then crack my teeth into pieces to pull them out.

The roots on your teeth look huge lol! Mine just look gross. I think the one with the hole was part of the tooth to the right of it.

The procedure went really well... I was under general anesthetics so I only really remember my arm being in the doctors crotch when he was putting in an IV, laughing my butt off as one of the nurses said I weighed fourteen pounds and that she's taken apart a turkey that weighed more than me, and then hearing Alejandro on the radio ha. And now I'm waiting for the swelling/bruising to appear, if it does.
