View Full Version : Interview questions for Max Bemis?

I just received news that I'm going to be interviewing him this Friday. I'm normally able to come up with questions for interviews but this time I can't seem to be able to come up with ANYTHING so I figured I would go somewhere and ask for submissions. I hope this isn't in the wrong thread nor does it violate terms of use.

So here we go: Does anyone have interview questions for Max Bemis?

That's intimidating.

Do you want the interview to go a specific direction, or just stay general? Also, if you don't mind me asking, how did you get this chance?

I'd like the interview to be pretty general, I'm open to a variety of pretty much any sort of question although I'd prefer for them to more ~serious~ (not "what's your favorite color?" type questions, you know). The way I got this is that I write for two different music zine's and I was just presented with this opportunity as a sort of surprise today. They figured 'why not make the die-hard do it?'

Ask if he has any ideas or a new direction yet for the new album

"I can't seem to be able to come up with ANYTHING"
pun intended correct?

ask him which record of his is he most proud of. Then song.
also ask him if he goes anywhere in particular or gets in some sort of "zone" to write songs.

Will I be able to find this interview anywhere when you finish it?

Ask why he always has to act like a vag about everything

Why did he write such an awful song about such a handsome man?

Here's a few ideas:

Obvious choice is to check in all his current projects so ask about: the direction of the next say anything record, the current tour with AVA, Two Tongues, The Song Shop and Perma. Maybe ask about the S/T because it was recenlty released, such as influences on it in his life, although I think this has been pretty well covered already by alot of interviews.

But as far as questions I'd like to know:

-Will the rarities collection that he plans on releasing include any rerecordings, even if it's just one or two like on the new something corporate greatest hits?
-Will fans ever be able to read/see/listen to any of the IARB material that didn't make it, such as the differnt characters talking, a script etc? Is an IARB movie a possibility?
-Will the next album return to the slightly "crazier" sound of IARB or stay with the more "crisp" sound of the previous two records?
-Currently, how does he feel about the internet and opening up and connecting with fans over it? Has negative comments/feedback forced him to interact less through sites like twitter?
-Will Wow, I Can Get Sexual too ever get taken off the regular set list for the shows?

Now that I catch that, yes, much pun intended.
I have a similar question already about his writing process but I'll word it a little differently so it includes the "zone".

Yeah you'll totally be able to find this interview once it's posted.. which will probably be sometime next week.
I'll post the link once it's up.

I covered the next record, Two Tongues, The Song Shop and Perma in questions already. Asking about the s/t is something I'm hesitating just a bit on because I feel it's probably become terribly monotonous to him but there's a question there about it too. As for the questions you asked, I'm including the question about the rarities and IARB. I have a question about the networking and internet already though so you're covered there.

Awesome, it looks like we're very much on the same page. Really looking forward to this and good luck!

Oh, is this like, over the phone or in person?

It's over the phone even though I'm more than likely going to the show the following day. :/

Ask him what I have to do to get him to put "A Boston Peace" in the Atlanta setlist.

Seriously.

Something along the lines of "do you choose not to write songs like the ones on IARB or are you just unable because you were manic when you wrote them?"

what his wierdest influence for a song was.
what is his favorite memory he has ever had since the start of say anything.
if you were to look through his ipod what would you be shocked to find.
what is his biggest advice for aspiring artists

pretty much. everything he wrote after that has been less than half as solid and more than twice as cliche/uncreative.

What graphic novels are he reading now?
Ask him what fans might expect from the Bemis/DuPree side project.
What are his current AOTYs?
Also I'm curious to know why he dissed Kanye and Brandon Flowers in Hate Everyone.

Try this one:

Dear Max,

Why?

Sincerely,

how long can you see yourself doing the whole "say anything" thing? Is there a ceiling you wish to get with your band, or is it just a go with the flow until it's just not fun anymore?

The first song off " In defense..." the name of the song has escaped me atm. It's not very good though.

I really like this question actually. I already have seventeen questions though and I've seen from previous interviews that sometimes he seems to talk a lot so I feel like this is already far too lengthy but I'll try to fit this in somewhere.

Also for anyone else, I'll post the link to the interview once it's posted which should be sometime next week.
For now though, I don't think I need anymore questions.
Thank you so much, guys.
