That's pretty asinine if you ask me. The guy was promoting the education of wildlife as his job. He was adored around the world for his uncanny charisma and offbeat charm that made you watch his shows and learn new things about wild animals. He wasn't "messing around" with mother nature. He loved to inform people about different animals as he was trying to do in a underwater documentary and he was killed. Therefore you say he fucked with mother nature too much. I'm going to laugh when you get struck by lightening.

I still find it hard to believe...even though he did something incredibly dangerous for a living. I thought he would be around forever wrestling crocodiles. May he rest in peace. He did more good in his 44 years than what most of us will in our lifetimes. He educated so many people on animal and conservation awareness.
He was one of a kind.
My thoughts are with his family and friends.

are you serious? i know that every time ive watched steve irwins show he handles wild animals, grabbing alligators and snakes and whatever other animal he is filming. he had a very hands on approachive seen him bitten by numerous snakes, and i believe it was probably the same case with this stingray accident. he was obviously too close to this animal if it was able to sting right through his chest. ive been stung by a ray before in the ankle and they generally only attack when provoked. that is, if you touch them they will defend themselves.
there is a difference between a documentary filming the natural lives of wild animals, and a tv show where some guy picks up animals and plays around with them in front of the camera.
all im saying is take this as a lesson. in much the same way that parents tell their children to respect the power of the ocean, you should respect the power of wildlife and realize these creatures are something that should be observed from a distance.

i guess we're defining 'cool' differently, because i think that is cool. giving your life to save someone else is not a bad thing in my book. it's actually amazing to me that some people could be that selfless to risk their life (and lose it) trying to save someone. i respect those people a lot. and that would make them cool in my eyes.
i'm not saying the fact that he's dead is cool, i'm saying that the fact that he died doing what he loved is cool. there's a difference. there's much worse ways to die.

First, if it paralyzed you, it wouldn't be painful.
Secondly, if it was into his heart, it probably took over almost instantaneously.
I mean, R.I.P. and all, don't get me wrong... It's a tragedy, and I wouldn't wish it on my absolute worst enemy, but, I'VE never been stabbed through the heart by a stingray, because I don't go diving into the ocean trying to wrestle Moby Dick and all his killer friends.

Its not a 'cool' death? look at it this way, if he had passed on through the years and grown old and faded, died of a heart disease or cancer...he would become part of the same decaying pile of normal people. Even death by a crocodile wouldnt do what this sting ray barb did....he will be legend, particuarly here in Australia, he wont grow old, he wont be forgotten...
Also...he took risks and paid the price. Its kinda weird...people like him seem invincible. Its pretty damn sad. Queensland where his from...we're economically fucked...half our states economy relied on the tourism dollars from steve....hahaha well not quite...but you get the picture...
RIP steve...

as the matches have said "may your organs fail before your dreams fail you." Steve's dreams didn't fail before his life did.

this guy was more then a pop icon ... He really dedicated his life to wildlife. I dont care what you say 99.99999 percent of us won't leave our plush lives to chase and help animals throughout the world. The man lived in huts and trailers for godsakes ... he was a millionaire by all rights but he never kept a penny for himself other then what he need to feed his family. I can't believe there are people here going "well he stuck his head around crocodiles, thats dumb, i guess its COOL to go that way though" ... the man had a job that had to be done and that few actually do.
so in short give the man some credit ... he brought animal awareness into your home ... IF BILL NYE the SCIENCE GUY DIED DOING AN EXPERIMENT WOULD YOU BE LIKE WELL HE SHOULDNT HAVE MESSING WITH CHEMICALS??? ...
now if bill nye dies my childhood is over
im gonna miss steve irwen (rip)

I think his age adds to the sadness. People like him should live until they're old and wrinkly and need help standing up when they cut a ribbon to a new charity organization.
As someone who is planning on persuing a wildlife rehibilitation career, his death is some of the worst. His charm and knowledge will be greatly missed.
RIP

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the guy from Grizzly Man. Not only did he get eaten by a grizzly, but his wife got eaten as well. Either she was a really slow runner or she tried to save him and couldn't.
At any rate, it's surreal that Steve Irwin is dead. I only hope his lasting legacy won't be dangling his baby in front of that croc. It certainly doesn't deserve to be.

I'm going to laugh when you get struck by lightening.
seriously how dumb are you guys. You guys seriously need to calm down. What the guy said before wasn't right but he wasn't in the wrong either. If you ever saw his documentaries it was ridiculous. He put himself in danger most of the time. Always confronting the animals rather than observing from a distance. You guys really need to change what you guys type. Don't mourn someones death by wishing someone else to die. That's ignorant and just plain uncalled for. Many people will voice his opinion, and detah is no laughing matter. I read the previous guys post and it wasn't really that offensive.

He's apparently the first person on record since 1943 to be killed by a stingray, don't know if that's worldwide or just Austrailia, or true.
A tribute to him is airing tonight at 6 Eastern time on Animal Planet.

Just to clear up, he wasn't "wrestling" the stingray or whatever. The stingray was under the sand and he didn't see it, swam too close, it got frightened and killed him. Horrible luck.
