I dunno, it's one of those kinda things I'd get really angry with, if that makes sense. I'll still probably watch it but I'd end up in a really bad mood afterwords. It's looks really interesting though.

Teaching intolerance towards Mormons after they showed intolerance towards homosexuals. Seems extremely hypocritical, and I think I'll pass on this one.

They're showing intolerance towards a group of people who are not showing only showing intolerance to another group, but doing what they can to take away their rights? Fuck these people.

I'm all for freedom of religion, but when your church is spending millions of dollars to take away someone else's free will, well, the only word I can think is evil. That's what I think when I see these people. Evil and hateful

Is this movie about your family? No? So what's the problem?
It's a documentary about people doing evil, ridicoulous things. A documentary. It's not like they're making up some slander about Mormons, the Mormons in the documentary say how they feel. If your family is not hateful and intolerent, what's the problem? People should ignore the plight of millions of gay people so we don't offend your mom?

In what way is this "teaching intolerance?" They're simply making known the role of the Mormon Church in the passing of Prop. 8. It's a documentary, not a propaganda film.

The key is right there in the name. My experiences with Mormonism has been that they focus on the Latter-Day Saints portion of their name, in particular the teachings of Joseph Smith, which are entirely unique to their religion and not included in any other version of Christianity. Given that you grew up in Utah, I'm certain you must have encountered Mormon door-to-door missionaries. Perhaps they do it differently where you are than they do here, but many of them focus on the Book of Mormon, which, again, is entirely unique to their religion and not used in any other branch of Christianity.
Does it have roots in Christianity? Yes. However, saying they're the same would be like saying Christianity and Judaism are the same. Just because they share the same origins, doesn't mean they don't have a point of drastic divergence from each other.
All of that said, I definitely would be interested to see this documentary. Even though I suspect it'd just be every bit as frustrating and rage-inducing as the entire Prop 8 battle itself was.

Although this documentary is only spreading information, the trailer gives me the impression that a lot of the information will be partial and/or biased.
For example, the clip in the trailer where some guy "impersonates" the Mormon church by saying, "...This is how much you make. This is how much we think you can give... or you might lose your membership." What he is referring to is tithing, which is 5% of the household income in the Mormon church, which is very similar to other religious groups. There is no way someone would lose their membership over tithing. Also along these lines, members of the Mormon church can choose where they would like their tithe money to be spent.
I did grow up in the Mormon church, but do not associate with the church in any way these day. I certainly believe that homosexuals should have the right to get married, and therefore strongly disagree with the Mormon church on this issue. But from what I can collect, the only purpose of this documentary is to make people upset with the Mormon church, and I don't support that.

it's nice to see an eloquent response. :)
you make a good point. this church certainly does center around the Book of Mormon, and Joseph Smith has a high place of respect within the ranks of members. however, it is also a church that focuses on the "divinity" of Jesus Christ, which, in my mind, makes it a Christian religion. i'm not sure how else to define Christianity without Christ being deemed a "savior." Judaism is not Christianity because it does not accept or acknowledge any kind of divinity associated with Christ.
unfortunately, this documentary seems to be fighting ignorance with ignorance - the trailer is extremely one sided.

I meant the comparison in the sense that Christianity has the same beginning background as Judaism, but then drastically diverges at the point where Jesus Christ enters the picture, same as Christianity and Mormonism have the same background, but then drastically diverge after the prophecies and teachings of Joseph Smith. It's not a perfect analogy, I know, but that's where I was going with it.
And as much as I want to have sympathy for the angle being taken with this documentary, it's extremely difficult for me to manage any for the simple fact that the Mormon religion went so far out of their way to legally opress the rights of people that have exactly no effect whatsoever on their lives. It was a hate-driven campaign, and everyone I encountered on their side had absolutely no interest in making any efforts towards tolerance, instead spewing blind hate and judgment.

You just made my point, the religions are completely different unless you way over simplify it. Your over simplification is that Christianity is simply a church that focuses on the "divinity" of Jesus Christ. That is not what makes Christianity distinct. The key to any religion, is how it balances the cosmos versus the chaos. It attempts to answers the origin question, the where we go when we die question, and what do we do while we're here.
You can certainly find common points of belief, but the foundation of the religions, their doctrine, and theology are drastically different.
Even in its most basic arguments.

The origin question is answered the same: god created Adam and Eve, the garden of eden, etc. The LDS religion accepts this as the "origin of man", and uses the Bible as support. It is my understanding that all Christian religions use this same story.
The where do we go question is also the same: the LDS faith believes in judgment after we die, as well as "heaven and hell" - they are simply called by different names than in most other Christian religions.
What do we do while we're here: I think this might be where the LDS religion and all other Christian religions are the most similar. They both use Christ as the ultimate example of how we should act on Earth, as well as the inclusion of the ten commandments, to an extent.
To me, the foundations are clearly the same, at least from my experience with various Christian religions. Although Mormons have the added doctrine of the Book of Mormon, they still base many of the fundamental religious beliefs off of teachings from the King James Bible.

I feel like you are arguing just to be a contrarian. Their theological differences are so vast and again you are going to the most common denominator to find similarities which illustrates my original point.

Nope, I just simply cannot see how they are not a Christian religion - that's all. I don't see any argument in it at all.

as if Christianity wasn't stupid enough, Mormonism throws in some sci fi shit. when you die you get your own planet and shit. Black people couldn't even join the church until the mid 70's. Mormon girls are usually hot though, they manufacture them or something.
