Garret Dillahunt deserves a big role already. He's been consistently delivering as a character actor for some time. Surely this performance will be no different.

If Jennifer Lawrence isn't AT LEAST nominated for Best Actress it will be highway robbery. Will be quite surprised if I see a better female performance this year.

If Jennifer Lawrence isn't AT LEAST nominated for an Oscar come January, that's it. I give up. She is fucking astounding in this.

I'm listening to a podcast doing their top five performances of the year so far, and wow, they are right, Hawkes really does have a Cazale aura to him.

Finally saw this tonight and it's definitely worthy of all the praise it's been getting. On a semi-related note I was recently made aware there's an area of KY known as "Meth Mountain" and this film more or less portrays what goes down in eastern KY on a daily basis.

MY grandparents live right outside Branson, Missouri; where this was filmed. It was interesting to see roads I've driven on that I'd never in a million years expect to see in a movie. The film captures the feeling of the year perfectly. Meth is such a part of that community it's scary.

Unlikely, but would be absolutely fantastic. Love all the oscar camp-ing that's been going on for this film.

But it isn't simply that Hawkes is a convincing heavy; plenty of people do that every year and don't get Oscar nominations for it. What makes his performance as Teardrop special is the way he provides near-subliminal hints of depths beneath the terrifying facade. Lawrence is the star and dominates the screentime. When Teardrop is onscreen at all, he's with Ree, and they're either talking about Jessup or looking for him. Hawkes doesn't have a lot of opportunities to express what is on his character's mind and even if he did, a man like Teardrop would never tell his niece how he was feeling. So Hawkes has to say it all with gestures: the slouch behind the wheel of his truck, the desperate way he drags on his cigarette. In "Winter's Bone"'s final scene, he tells us exactly what is going to happen to Teardrop after the film is over without uttering a single word.

I'd love to see Hawkes get a nom for supporting actor, but I really don't think it's possible with Bale, Garfield, Damon, Penn, Rush, Murray, and Ruffalo in the running.

DickfaceChillah

I really hope Ruffalo doesn't get a Kids nod. I dig him a lot, and thought he was certainly good in the role, but nothing about that film is award worthy.

I don't get very emotional in the cinemas, but the damn scene in the river tore me apart. I couldn't imagine a film like Winter's Bone delivering anything larger than that.

I'm almost certain that he will, though I don't really see what was so exceptional about his performance. I'm also surprised that Bening is getting as much buzz as she is. I liked Moore's performance a lot more.

Here's why I think Benning was so effective:

She annoyed me to the point I wanted to put a fucking BULLET in her head AND mine. Oscar worthy? No. Praise worthy? I'd say. She perfected incredibly condescending and annoyingly dykey.

oooooo I dunno. Not saying these are necessarily better, but Night Catches Us, Red Hill and NY Export: Opus Jazz give Bone a run for its money.

while I really, really enjoyed Red Hill, I'm kind of shocked to see you put it as one of the year's best. Not that it isn't or anything, but didn't see that coming from you. If that makes any sense.

I haven't been super impressed by any films this year outside of films that were technically released in 2009 that weren't available in the U.S. until 2010. Bone and NY Export were probably my favorites. Red Hill had some very good moments but was flawed. No strict 2010 releases have really wowed me.

Watched this last night finally and loved it; a lot of it reminded me of Frozen River for various reasons.

It's amazing how plain jane Lawrence looked in this and how gorgeous she was at the Oscars. They did a great job with the wardrobe and look for the cast as a whole actually.
