Below is an update from Thrice (http://www.thrice.net):
Hey All,
As a lot of you may know, for the past month or so, we've been writing and recording our next album. We didn't want to say anything official until we'd finalized a lot of the details, but now that we're getting rolling on it, we want you guys to be the first to know what the plans are for this album.
We have started writing and recording a 4 disc concept record, with each disc being themed sonically and thematically to correspond with the four natural elements - earth, air, water and fire. The final record will have somewhere between 20 and 25 songs, divided between the 4 discs.
We are approaching the whole project in a new way for us, both writing and recording. Writing with these elements in mind, we are letting them shape the direction of the songs sonically and thematically. And for the first time, we're recording the record ourselves as we write it, freeing us up to change things as we go.
We are very excited about the project and are looking forward to sharing more details as the record takes shape. We're also in the process of setting up a site dedicated to keeping you up to date on our progress, so keep a look out for that in the near future.
For our friends on the west coast, we have two events to talk about. The first is the Race for the Cure later this month. We'll be doing the race this year along with our friends Chuck Ragan and The Cold War Kids. Dustin, Chuck, and the Cold War Kids will be doing a special acoustic show after exclusively for those who attend the Race with us. All of the sign up details are posted below as well as on our MySpace page.
Also, we will be heading out on a few dates in October, with two awesome bands - These Arms are Snakes and Planes Mistaken for Stars. We're putting together a brand new setlist, digging up some old songs we haven't played in a while, songs we've never played live before, and a couple of the new songs we're working on.
Stay tuned for more details about the elements, videos, and pictures. We'll get to all of that as the album progresses. We look forward to seeing you all soon.
Love,
- Thrice

thats pretty cool, this past record didnt seem like it was out for very long. So I think the real question is, Will the record stay soft melodic or will there be some odler roots back into the mix? Or maybe somehting new

Thrice is so good. I wish Thrice and THursday were the biggest bands in the world right now. That being said the elements of earth air, etc, seems a little lame, wish they could have though of something cooler, but 4 EP's basically seems really fucking cool.
thrice > ten
clearly
wow i can't wait for this.
seeing them in october in SF, i'm excited to see what the setlist they come up with.
and to everyone bitching about 'concept album' and 'only 6 songs per cd' you dont have to get into that. just buy it and listen to the music. you don't have to know the reasoning behind a song to enjoy it, obviously that can add something, but if you think it's pretentious, who cares? just listen to the music and then decide off of that.
anyways, thrice has been my favorite band for 5 years because of their music and becuase of the type of band they are. that certainly doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon.
ps: how many cd's did vheissu end up sold / shipped? and was it considered a success for them with island? i can't find this info anywhere.

Normathespy's 36 disc concept album is due out in the early Spring of next year. Each album should have about twenty tracks. It will detail every event that has happened in my life up to this point including yesterday when I was driving to work and I accidentally hit a pot hole. It was a very tragic time in my life, and I'm still recovering.

the concept seems cool.... but honestly id rather have a band release just a simple 12 song cd of kick ass material than a concept album. but its their choice, and probably a logical move. their last cd to me was kind of a concept album, and it was their best one to date. i wonder if any of that electronic sound is gonna make it to this album

Seriously, this is freekin' amazing... For all of you nay-sayers out there, get over yourselves, what do you think so many of the great albums of the past were... CONCEPT ALBUMS (e.g. Dark Side of the Moon, Aqualung, The Unforgettable Fire, Mellencholy and the...). Just because Thrice doesn't have to drop into a drug induced haze to produce some interesting, themed material doesn't make them lame. And if what I hear is correct, the four albums will be sold as one unit, and because you know that Thrice always has arse-kicking artwork, they will likely all have different packaging, etc...
Just start to get stoked for this. In all reality, I think Thrice, with all of their controversial progression will be one of the few bands from the last decade (or from our "generation") that will actually leave a mark on the future... What I mean by this is they are actually looking to push their scene, not lay on top of it while it moves slowly from underneith them.
And yes, they are still on Island, that label loves them!

I thought it was interesting at first, but now I'm really anticipating it with the explanation. If they can really capture the idea of the 4 elements sonically this could be pretty incredible. The real challenge will be making earth, air, and water all noticeably different, whereas fire is obviously just going to be an awesome, intense disc.

09/06/06, 08:57 PM
they better do two elements per cd if it's 20-25 songs.

Thrice has been my favorite band for years, and have never let me down, from Identity Crisis to Vehissu and even their B-Sides. I think the music they write is technical, passionate, and amazing both musically and lyrically. They may change styles a lot, but they have never ceased to amaze me with the songs they come up with and the live show they put on. I'm excited for these albums, I pretty much have an undying fiath in Thrice. Plus the fact that they spend so much of their time and fame helping out good causes (Invisible Children, Race for a Cure) etc just makes them better in my eyes.
I agree withthe earlier comments, I think the Fire disc will be hard, but something new - Maybe a bit of Illusion of Safety mixed with their newer hard style (Like To Awake and Avenge the Dead mixed with Paper Tigers, Hold Fast Hope, etc). Air will be somewhere along the lines of Vheissu, Red Sky, etc. Earth and water i'm not sure about, water automatically makes me think of "Atalntic" on Vheissu. Anyway, just my thoughts, feel free to agree or disagree.
And I wish they had some east coast dates planned, new songs and never played songs? I'd love to see (That) Hideous Strength and Motion Isn't Meaning played live. Oh yeah, and "In Years to Come".

Really, they have only released one very good album, and it isn't even borderline amazing.
Identity Crisis - An alright starting point with potential
Illusion of Safety - Holy shit, where did this come from?
A in the A - Uhh..wtf, this is the direction they are taking? Well, can't say i didn't see it coming.
V - Just a big pile of poop. Not epic, not interesting, not entertaining

See, most of my friends that aren't huge Thrice fans, like Identity Crisis the best. I like Illusion of Safety the best, I compeltely agree with you, when I heard it I was like "WTF, where did this come from?" and while TAITA threw me off at first, I still thought the songs were good and the lyrics were too, Vheissu though I love, it's an album where on CD or live I can just close my eyes and listen to and enjoy.

Yeah sure this album will be debated over because they are one of those successors in the "scene". Of course people would compare it to TEN's album simply because it's another themed album released around the same time. Do you really think the guys from Thrice listened to that album and were like "Wow...that's a good idea. Lets do that too."
Honestly, you elitest fuckers that say their only good albums were the older ones....grow the hell up. Would you rather they keep releasing the same albums over and over again? I've loved this band since Illusion Of Safety, but my favorite album has to be Artist in the Ambulance. That's fine you don't like the new stuff, but don't totally disreguard this album simply because you're too high on your gay pedastle. Give it a real listen when it does come out and see what you think.

I loved TIOS, as well as TAITA, IC wasn't too bad overall either. However, Vheissu was not to my liking. Sure, I don't want Thrice (or any other band for that matter) to keep re-releasing similar material, but that does not necessarily mean I will like the particular direction they go.
However their new "concept" album seriously has me intrigued, even though I did not enjoy Vheissu. I seriously can't wait for the Ocean, Wind, and Fire tracks. Hell, might as well throw Earth in there.

Condescending ways? I was merely stating my opinion about the band. And saying that I have a poor taste in music because I don't like some of a band's work is quite a statement to make.
And when Identity Crisis came out I did think to myself "well, this is not bad, but it could be better." What's so hard to believe about that?
I knew this would be the sort of replies I got because as soon as someone condemns new thrice they are an idiot in the eyes of this forum.

i sincerely love these guys, i just hope they don't get overly self-indulgent with their progressive creative powers. vheissu wasn't entirely a break from their previous hardcore work, and so i hope they can shift entirely in the direction vheissu hinted at, without being too pretentious in this idea of a 4-disc concept album revolving around four elements. i really hope dustin knows what he's targeting here...concept-wise. regardless of how well this album turns out, i can guarantee there'll be tons of naysayers saying thrice took their prog-rock influences and created a self-indulgent piece of crap that only diehard fanboys would consider sincerely liking (cough cough pitchfork regarding the mars volta).
And when Identity Crisis came out I did think to myself "well, this is not bad, but it could be better." What's so hard to believe about that?
I agree with you, Bung. I am an avid fan of Thrice's, but I believe I am allowed to feel like their music could and will be better as they mature more and begin to discover their sound and set themselves apart from the scene they used to be idols within. Identity Crisis was FAR from great...it's a good album...but it could've been better. What matters is that Thrice got better after that album. They took the excellent parts of that album and ran with them. Music is a progression...it can't always be perfect all the time.

I'm tired of These motherfucking Arms are Snakes on this motherfucking Planes Mistaken for Stars!
haha i was gonna say something along those lines...
i dont know how i feel about this...TEN had 46 songs over 3 discs and thrice will have 20-25 over 4...that could easily be over 2

You were twelve years old!!! What kind of reference points did you have at the time?! I know at that age, I didn't have many, nor did pretty much anyone I know. And definitely not in that so-called "scene"... I was listening to freakin' Ace of Base and Dance Mix '94 at the time!
As for the other part, I believe you calling Vheissu "Just a big pile of poop" seems at least a little condescending... I'll stand by that. No disrespect, but if you wanted to just "state your opinion about the band", maybe, just maybe, that was just a bad choice of words...

i dont know. it seems everyone's donig "concept" records when they run out of ideas. i like it when bands just write music tahts on their minds instead of sometimes thinking of an idea for an entire album and writting music to fit it. im not saying thrice is doing that but just stating some concern not a big fan of their last album but maybe it gave them something to bild off of for this one to do kind of a mix between taht one and like their previous ones with ahrder riffs

Yeah, I saw this bulletin posted last night and almost submitted it, but lost track of time.
It certainly gave me an erection, because 4 new Thrice albums (no matter how many cuts are on it - you know they'll be fucking epic) is like finding gold at the end of the good music rainbow.
6 songs/CD? That's terrible.
lol thats what i was thinking. thats so stupid. waste of money.

We are approaching the whole project in a new way for us, both writing and recording. Writing with these elements in mind, we are letting them shape the direction of the songs sonically and thematically. And for the first time, we're recording the record ourselves as we write it, freeing us up to change things as we go.
^reminds me of the London Calling recording process.
I bet It'll be:
Fire:Totally new style
Earth:TAITA style
Air: Vhessiu style
Water:Gastbys/Circa Survive/Minus The Bear style
jesus christ no, are you fucking kidding? Do you really have no imagination? Think about the elements sonically, not literally. Those predictions are about as far off as anyone could ever guess.

I didn't think it was that horrible of a prediction.
Unless Thrice come out with 4 completely different albums, and all 4 of them sound like nothing Thrice has done before, then this isn't too far off as a prediction.
I'm not saying Thrice CAN'T come up with 4 completely new styles to match the elements, I'm just saying I don't know that they will.

i think this is extremely clever of them to make a 4 disk set. who knows, maybe each cd will have a different sound to it, but with Thrice, I've always come to expect them to surprise us (pleasantly) in the end. they're my favorite band for a reason.

This is such a bad idea. The way they're talking about it, I'm scared it's gonna be like their last cd.
if its anything like there last cd.. well.. i'll wet myself with happiness.
but i dont expect it to be.. they've constantly changed their sound.. successfully in my opinion. definitely my favorite band, tied with SoCo probably.. hard to decide.
