the following is a short paper for my english class in regards to an essay we read in class. this is how i felt about the essay. feel free to question, comment, criticize and bitch about it.

I have read your essay concerning the reason behind modern music. In Blasting Music to Drown Out Reality, you argue that the music of today serves no greater purpose than to numb our senses from our own existence. You even dare suggest that music functions as opiate for the masses. It is a desecration of human endeavor to condemn the art of expressing the joys and afflictions of the soul through the chord progression of an electric guitar. You massacre our greatest craft by ultimately regarding it as something vague and derelict.

Though contemporary music differs vastly from previous times, it is by no means, any less relevant. Modern music is just as meaningful. The reason why modern is of so much importance is due to the substance matter with which it deals. Examples can be found in a variety of genres ranging from speedmetal to punk. Lyrics like “…realize that we spend our lives living in culture controlled by fear…” (We’re All to Blame-Sum 41.) and “…military intelligence, two words combine that can’t make sense…” (Hangar 18-Megadeth.) are far from mundane.

Furthermore, it is only natural that music, like everything else, evolves. Post-hardcore does not resemble the 1812 Overture. Does this mean post-hardcore is a horrible brand of music? No, it is just different. Music cannot remain stagnant because its creators do not remain the same.

To conclude, I believe you are fallacious when you brand modern music as nothing more auditory trash. Your argument that music is just a vehicle to suppress our lives is erroneous. Current music delivers a relevant message (specially in today’s society) and like us, it clearly has to move on.

so what do you guys think?

hey, i just read that the other day so i may be able to add something valid which is that the thesis of the article doesn't attack the integrity of contemporary music, he is just using it as rhetorical device to further persuade his readers. His thesis is that the loudness of our music can be seen inversely proportional to are intelligence which means that the louder we listen to music, the less intelligent we are. This is a persuasive piece which entirely consists of deductive statements (hyperboles) and contradictories such as how he can allude to composers like Bach and Mozart which would be no different in decibels to modern days. The writer was obviously close minded but i believe he wrote this article to elicit emotions and have his piece talked about.. Anyways, that is my two cents hope it is of some help.. i did enjoy what i read. keep it
