So yeah I just resigned from my work because it was he best option to go. Basically what happened was my store director at the supermarket I worked at caught me drinking a damaged bottle of water. By damaged I mean it could not have been sold anyways. Now keep in mind I had been working for this company for 2 years and you would think something so small as this would be looked upon.(the whole deal happened off surveillance too) Well he told me to clock out that night and the next day gave me a choice to either resign or have this "stealing" issue on my work records. So I took the better option and just resigned. I think that was the best option because either way I would be terminated. Do you guys think he made the right decision or do you think he should have looked past this?

You stole. Doesn't matter how you try to twist it or shape it, it is theft. You are lucky your manager is such a sweet dude.

Forced to resign for drinking a (stolen?) bottle of water. :-| sounds like bullshit. Couldn't you have just given him $2. Very unfair to you, especially considering it was damaged.

Lame boss. Simple.
there was a trial in germany, because a nurse who worked for many many years in a hospital took some hospital leftover food home (which would have ended up in the trash anyway). the nurse protested against being fired - and lost.
personally, I think it's a little harsh. but it's the hospital's garbage, not yours - and they decide what they do with their garbage, not you. it has to do with respect and power - and you just had to learn that the hard way...

Funny because when I first got out of HS I had a job at this shitty grocery store and the manager told me if I ever got thirsty to just go back there and pick what I wanted to drink...unrelated the place went out of business within 5 months.
True, it was company property, so technically that's stealing. But honestly for someone who's been there for years, and for a damaged small item, they could've just had you pay afterwards or given you a warning. Considering how bad the job market is on every level, your manager could've shown some compassion and not been so by-the-book on such a small subject. Not everything is black and white.
I've worked retail, and damaged items aren't of any value to them, they'll either get sent back or destroyed. Funny enough, if they asked you for money for it instead, they'd actually have made a profit on the water.

My sisster used to work at an Xtra-Vision (an Irish Blockbusters) and they used to let thir staff just take Ben and Jerry's, Coke and movies home. Like they weren't technically aloud, but the manager didn't care. BUt then someone stole a phone from the store so they had to stop haha.
Anyways, yeah I think if you had of taken it out of thrash (obviosly you wouldn't, but yeah) it wouldn't have been anything, but I think it was more of a fact that you decided what to do with it, was probably why. And also, you could have intentinally damaged it, just to drink it since it wasn't on camera. But yeah, it was dickish of them, but it was also dickish of you too haha.

So lemme get this straight. You work at a Food Lion and your bitching about being fired?? This is the best thing ever for you krimson, go start a band, pick up a hobby, get laid. Most importantly find a better job. ;)

You wouldn't have been fired for drinking the water(yes it is stealing, or else people would be "damaging" a lot more goods), it would have merely been put on your record. But I guess it's done now.

The whole point is that it was a bottle of fucking water. He should have just bought it or at least asked. Instead, he stole it. What's the manager going to think if the guy is willing to steal a 20c bottle of water?

At the grocery store I worked if something was busted or going bad we got a chunk of money back just for emptying the container and sending it back to the company on their truck...in this sense I don't see the big deal.

When I was younger, I worked at the tuck shop stall. One day, I forgot my lunch, and had no money. Due to desperation, I stole a bun at the tuck shop, while every one wasn't looking. Unfortunately, I didn't know they counted the buns, and it came back to everyone that worked. I tried to look responsible, by admitting to stealing it. I got kicked out of the tuck shop.
They didn't even sympathise with a starving 10 year old boy. Why would they with you, someone twice the age?
It sucks that he threatened putting it on file though. He should have let it go. Yeah, you're in the wrong, but why should anyone care? It's not harming your store, unless the bottle of water was on "sale or return".

That's shit. I worked at a supermarket for a year and even the managers used to do that shit. It's broken, so it's going in the bin. No one's allowed to have it and some homeless bum will steal it and drink it instead. I don't get it.
Bosses put themselves on pedistools. No one else does, so they like to try and remind you.

This. Explain to me what it is about being a 40+ year old who runs a supermarket that gives them a god complex. Does lording over school kids and early twenty year olds make them feel that good?
I understand it's a defense mechanism from having such a shitty job, but seriously, grow the fuck up. God damn.

lol, pedistools.
I've worked at a grocery store for about a year now though and most places would have probably done the same thing. You're kinda lucky they just didn't fire you. From my experience big supermarkets will always follow policies and/or the customers will before they give a shit about the employees. A dude I work with got suspended for 3 days because an old bitch didn't like how he looked at her. Another dude is getting sued because he knicked a lady in the heel with a carriage. Only thing that gets me through my job is having friends that work there. Otherwise you can always expect customers to be self absorbed cunts with no perspective at all that they're only buying fucking food. /end rant.

Basically, using you as a stepping stool to get a better position within the company (if there even is any available at all).

i work at a grocery store so i can see both sides but he was in the right even though it sucks. managers are in the shitty spot of trying to build trust but also have discipline. based on that i can see why he would do that. not to have aim low but another grocery store would very likely hire you cause most things are universal. like the PLU #s on the produce.
