The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:
The Dispensed
www.myspace.com/thedispensed
1. How did you get your band name?
We chose the name, The Dispensed, because to us it represents being released from whatever confines you.
2. How did this band get started?
I played in a rock and roll band for a few years and got so jaded with the industry and all that. When that band ended I found myself sitting on the couch wanted to write some simple honest poppy punk rock. So, I asked a few friends to help out and I wrote our debut record “Bury Your Heart” in three months. We released it on our own Retrace Records a few months ago. It’s available on iTunes and off of our merch page (bigcartel) on our myspace.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
Jawbreaker, Avail, The Clash, Social Distortion, Quicksand, Lawrence Arms, The Who, New York Dolls.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would it be and why?
Social Distortion- Mike Ness is one of the best song writers ever. Rancid- I love that band. Past, The Clash- I would loved to have met Joe Strummer.
5. If you were a furry, what animal would you be? Why that animal?
A cat. It’s a simple life.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
Catchy songs with lyrics that mean something.
7. If you were chosen to be in Guitar Hero/Rock Band, what song would you want in the game? How hard do you think it would be to five-star on expert?
“Serena” The lead lines would be really fun to play. As far as how hard… I suck at Guitar Hero so I have no idea.
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
I would thank all the other bands for sucking so bad that year so that the industry had no other choice than to nominate us for a Grammy. Then, I would thank the label heads for paying off the industry panel. Wouldn’t it be nice if the underdogs actually stood a chance?
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Get rid of the cookie cuter mentality of the industry. Just because a band has a hit does not mean we want 12 other bands that sound just like them. Look for originality. Plus, I wish they would bring Rock N Roll back. When was the last time you heard a good rock band? I can’t even remember. This radio rock crap has got to go.
10. Memorable tour experience?
We were at a house party in South Carolina after a show and passing around a bottle of Jack and I ended up passing out under a porch swing. When I woke up the next morning the singer of that band was sitting on the porch next to me giggling. Then he pointed to the white picket fence that wrapped around that house and he had painted a black pentagram with our band acronym next to it. I just shook my head and passed out again. That’s what happens when you listen to Motley Crue 24/7.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
It is good place to find new bands and network. Thanks for all you do for small bands.
12. What is your favorite song to play?
“Empty Houses, Broken Hearts” I just love the vibe of that song.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
My couch.
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Avail, Motley Crue, Gun N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, old Metallica, The Misfits, Subhumans, Dead Kennedys, Face to Face… Hey wait… these are the same bands I listen to now.
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
The courage to wear Batman underoos on stage. I hear they are making them for adults now.
16. Do you feel that your band has "made it"?
Not sure. I’ll tell you when we get there.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
I have a bit of a Motley Crue/ Nikki Sixx obsession.
18. What's your favorite holiday?
Halloween. It’s fun to dress up like your heroes for a night. Ziggy Stardust next year?
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Watch music documentaries or read.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Eating Nachos for every meal. I guess it’s more of a super power but I already answered that question.
