Just keep playing scales every single day for a while and then find some. Your hands won't cooperate well enough until you get used to the motions.

I don't play great guitar, but I took lessons and I practice sometimes myself.
I would just get my hands used to the neck by making up solos. Make up your own solo and play with it for awhile. Get used to moving your hands very quickly in specific places.
Then go to YouTube and watch some people do solos of famous songs you like and try to learn one.

listen to alot of Van Halen, Queen, and classic rock and learn from them. then learn your scales. perfect your hammering, pulling off, tapping, pitch harmonics, harmonics, tremelo picking, etc. i dunno

if it's overused, i agree with him. a solo here and there can be fine, but when a band goes for an over the top solo in every single song, it's beyond stupid.

totally. like, say dragonforce-- VERY extremely talented guitarists, but their music is so fast it actually makes me tired

big solos are just exxagerated melodies in disguise. the best way to get there is to practice feeling melodies- by learning simple ones and playing them without looking on the guitar. then gradually build yourself up. that way, you won't be wasting your time trying to be a ridiculous lead guitar player that plays the shit out of scales he doesn't understand...instead, you will be learning the basic fundamentals of melody that you need to make relevant and original music.
--Scales Scales Scales
--Checkout Cyberfret.com (http://www.cyberfret.com) for some decent online lessons
--Study your favorite guitarists, emulate their styles.
--Tabit.net (http://www.tabit.net), a 20 dollar program that plays tabs back in MIDI with a large collection of tabs, this program alone made me so much better of a guitarist.
--Practice, alot, and often.

Glassjaw is the musical reason that solo's are completely irrelevant in the 21st century.
That said I still appreciate a player with wicked technique and ability.
A good solo to work towards Steve Vai - Eugene's Trick Bag

Practice as many modes, arpeggios, and scales as you can (the pentatonic will come in very handy).
Once you've mastered them all, combine them cleveryly, and voila, you should have a good solo.

i agree, for the most part. the one thing it's good for is making you move your fingers faster. but i still really hate solos.
