Who/What is the Smoke Monster ?
The Smoke Monster is a man only referred to as the Man in Black. Transformed by the island, he is locked in a struggle with Jacob to leave the island. Can pose as people who have died. Believe humanity to be inherently corruptible.

Who is Jacob ?
The Island's protector. Responsible for bringing nearly everyone to the island. He wanted people to redeem themselves to prove the Man in Black wrong.

What is the Statue ?
The statue is that of the Egyptian god Taweret. Jacob lived inside of it. Almost completely destroyed by a giant wave that carried the Black Rock & Richard Alpert inside of it.

What Are The Numbers ?
The numbers 4 - 8- 15 -16 -23 - 42 correspond to certain members of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Those members are Candidates. People to replace Jacob.

I don't think it was a bad episode I just think it was out of place. It could have been put in the beginning of the season. A filler episode towards the end is ridiculous.

Didn't know so many of you just started it. I remember when the pilot aired and my mom was watching it. I wasn't really too interested but i picked it up soon after.

As much as i want to avoid the internet for the next week, i love coming into this thread on tuesday night or wednesday morning and just reading so many theories. definitely makes me think of things, or realize connections way better. it's made the series awesome.

But i know how it is cramming lost, i rewatched the entire series in something like 3 weeks before the last season, it's also been a nice refresher of what the hell has happened haha.

I still don't understand how Across The Sea was a filler episode. It puts the entire show into focus. This is what they're fighting for. I agree with Darlton's choice to put it there as a breather right after all the major deaths, but honestly, I think it would've had to have been placed at least after the Richard episode to get the most impact out of it in any case.

My thoughts exactly. I know I definitely had high expectations for it and it just didn't meet them. Regardless I still enjoyed it and wouldn't call it filler. I still think though that it would have been better to place it earlier on in the season. Might just be me though. Shrug.

I can't agree with this enough. The LOST thread is pretty much the reason I visit AP. And mostly everyone here is fantastic.

The only satisfying ending for me is one that will breed more discussion. The end should always be one that makes me want to reexamine the show. I am looking forward to connecting the end of the show to the past 6 years of it.

I wouldn't say that. I would say that it would be worth it. It might make some not complete sense, but it will be moving enough for it to be worth it.

Anyone else feel like next Tuesday there will still be an episode of LOST to watch ? 6 years. It's hard to imagine it's come so far to this point. It's even harder to imagine that the end exists. It's even more hard to imagine how it will end. Say what you will about the show, but to not have a concrete idea of how it will end by this point is pretty incredible.

I can't agree with this enough. The LOST thread is pretty much the reason I visit AP. And mostly everyone here is fantastic.

The only satisfying ending for me is one that will breed more discussion. The end should always be one that makes me want to reexamine the show. I am looking forward to connecting the end of the show to the past 6 years of it.

I hope the discussion in here continues to thrive even when the show is done; I really enjoy reading all of your posts and brainstorming about this amazing show. I don't think there's a group of Lost fans that even comes close to this AP group—it's nice to know that there's a thread of this caliber on Absolutepunk.

This thread has a very special group of people/friends. There's nothing quite like it on the rest of Ap.net, or the internet as a whole. Just as there is, and never will be, another show quite like LOST. It's been a fantastical ride, with great memories and great discussions.

I only hope the finale breeds more discussion, with JUST the right amount of closure to the show.

I hope we are all satisfied not only with the show's ending, but with the way this thread continues to make a difference in our lives.

I can't wait to restart the show once the finale is over and I've had a chance to soak it all in.

This will be one of those shows my children will grow up loving, and their children. LOST really is the Star Wars of our generation.
I agree with you on all points here. If I have kids someday, this show will be the one I will still be talking about as our generation's best—like you said, our Star Wars. The show, and it's fans, are a real diamond in the rough these days; there just aren't many shows that are performing at the level Lost has, and the majority of the fans are really great.

I always think of this show as a really awesome movie that also happens to be over 100 hours long! lol. They brought the format of serialized television back to life for me. It's fantastic to see shows like this can still be successful; just imagine if it had been canceled during the first season... I can't imagine not ever witnessing this show. That idea is hard to comprehend for me.

In the last thread, I posted an article in which Mark Pellegrino (Jacob) and Titus Welliver (MiB) talk about "Across the Sea" and I just had a sudden realization about it. In it, Mark Pellegrino talked about how Allison Jenney (Jacob's mom) reminded him of his mom and I think it kinda of makes me take note of their character's relationship more.

I'm not sure wither or not those performances came from that place, and I'm not the biggest fan of the execution of that in terms of giving too much emotion to Jacob, but that particular part makes me reevaluate the whole relationship and said performances over again considering where it might have come from. It informs the episode a bit. "Across The Sea" is a far more fascinating episode despite it's execution than it is said. It's kinda of a hugely successful episode in that regard.

I found this to be the most interesting.
Lindelof explained: “There is a repeating vicious cycle that seems to happen on this island, where people come to the Island, they try to figure out what makes the Island work, and the closer they [come] leads them to their own inevitable demise…. The more curious you become about why the Island has its properties, inevitably the protector of the Island feels the need to engage in some form of mass genocide. It was more our attempt to say that history repeats itself, and this is an ongoing and continuing motif.”

If history is stuck in a rut of corruption and catastrophe, can it be unstuck? Can the vicious cycle be broken? Can the hopeless myth of damnation be replaced with a new, better myth? I would like to suggest that these questions represent the Great Work that Jacob has been pursuing over the past couple thousand years. And after much trial and error, and after a few failed approaches, Jacob has found a way to do it — though it will be up to the castaways themselves, and perhaps one castaway in particular, to actually finish his Island redemption project. I don't remember catching that first particular part, but that as an idea is incredibly fascinating and I'm really glad it got pointed out by Damon. It's always been alluded to that there were the Egyptians were mysterious are all dead and then DHARMA. It makes so much sense too. Both tried play with the elements of the island. This particular post makes me wish there was a sequel to "Across The Sea". ATS should have been put at the beginning of the season with the focus of it being MiB and then at the end we get a Jacob episode around the time they Egyptians were there.


That's a fascinating idea that nearly sums up the point of LOST's story for me. When put that way, it makes me look forward to the end so much more.

In the grand scheme of things, he was just a pawn like everyone else. He was a cool character with some interesting moments, but he wasn't important enough in the big picture to really be anything more. He served that purpose well, but I think if people wanted more out of that character, they were obviously disappointed when he was taken out of the story so quickly.

Personally, I think Darlton put him out there just enough; any more, and we would have formed too much of a relationship with a character that they didn't plan on including for any great length of time. Just my opinion.

Wow, we're literally on the eve of the big last week of Lost that awaits. This reminds me of The Dark Knight anticipation and build-up 2 years ago, but on a grander scale. All the news articles, the magazines, the online chatter. It's that feeling that you're getting closer and closer to something you know will be monumental and the fact that everyone will be experiencing it at the same time in this case is really cool, and something quite rare.

There will probably be other shows in our lifetimes that captivate and bring together an audience, but it'll never be the same as this. It's bittersweet; it'll be sad to see the show go, but at the same time, this'll be a week to remember for sure. I really am looking forward to it, and I'm looking forward to the discussion and talk in this forum. It's always enjoyable to read theories, ideas and feelings in here, and it's one of the few places on AP that isn't filled with irritable posters. I certainly hope the talks and discussion continue way past the 23rd, as I've gained a lot of knowledge of the show from the Lost forums.

I'm having a small party of 4 people to watch the Finale. They're all well behaved and won't talk during the finale.

I think it's just going to be two buddies of mine, both of whom are the same (well-behaved and quiet).


That sucks. I just hope everyone I watch it with stays completely quiet. Unfortunately I'm one of those people who gets greatly agitated when people talk during it because you really have to listen to the show.

Very true. However, he is the protector so maybe he always knew how to get back to the island.
And since MIB is technically dead, when the smoke monster took over, he still has that same memory. So he could have still made it, only to realize he still cannot leave.

My friend in school today told me that a couple friends of his went to some pre-air show of "What They Died For" and they're like Lost Fanatics (having watched every episode like ten times each.)
He didn't want to know any details, but all they told him was that it's the greatest episode of Lost they've ever seen.

Wow, we're literally on the eve of the big last week of Lost that awaits. This reminds me of The Dark Knight anticipation and build-up 2 years ago, but on a grander scale. All the news articles, the magazines, the online chatter. It's that feeling that you're getting closer and closer to something you know will be monumental and the fact that everyone will be experiencing it at the same time in this case is really cool, and something quite rare.

There will probably be other shows in our lifetimes that captivate and bring together an audience, but it'll never be the same as this. It's bittersweet; it'll be sad to see the show go, but at the same time, this'll be a week to remember for sure. I really am looking forward to it, and I'm looking forward to the discussion and talk in this forum. It's always enjoyable to read theories, ideas and feelings in here, and it's one of the few places on AP that isn't filled with irritable posters. I certainly hope the talks and discussion continue way past the 23rd, as I've gained a lot of knowledge of the show from the Lost forums.

After tomorrow, it'll be a madhouse in here, so I wanted to say now that I hope everyone kicks back with a bag of Dharma chips or a tropical drink out a coconut shell and has a great time enjoying the week of events celebrating this 6-year run. We've all looked forward to this for years, so soak it in and have fun now that it's here.

I didn't especially care for Jack in the beginning. My views on him have changed however. Des has always been a favorite of mine however.

I guessed Jack is kind of a grower. Desmond seems cool so far, but I've only seen him in like 2 or 3 episodes so far. I love Charlie though, he cracks me up because he's so awkward.
