The latest marketing statistics indicate that Android phones are outselling iPhones (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/10/npd_android_phones_now_outsell_appl es_iphone_in_us.html). Of course, it has the advantage of multiple network support and a bunch of phones. So let's turn the question to the readers. Which mobile operating system do you prefer, Android or iPhone?
This poll is in conjunction with this week's Technology Round-up (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=1706002).

Just to make it clear, the Android phones outsold the iPhone in the last quarter, not all together. This is mainly because Android has had several new phones coming out whereas the iPhone is at the end of its cycle and will be updated next month. The iPhone will dominate the Android in the next few quarters. Watch and see.
That being said, the iPhone is by far the best phone out there but at&t is sketchy so that makes it tough, but I still picked iPhone. Android does have a few new phones coming out that are real slick though; ie: Evo 4G and Incredible. The Evo 4G is awesome but it's on Sprint who's service is worse then at&t and it's 4G is in the early infant stages and is only in a few markets, though it is adding several larger markets this year. The Incredible is also another awesome phone and is on Verizon, who is by far the best network, but it has a worse battery life then the iPhone. If I can't even make it through a day without my phone lasting, then it's really no good to me.

As soon as the iPhone comes to Verizon and allows multitasking, it will win this. AT&T is too spotty. That said, I think the iPhone has (at the moment) the better OS.

The multitasking is coming out in less then a month. You probably won't see a Verizon version until they roll out their LTE network which is their 4G and that's not coming til 2011. This is all assuming that the news of at&t and Apple having an exclusive deal through 2012 is false.

I don't like iPhones but I hate my android (Backflip) so my vote goes to the former.
Both are great, but I prefer Android's open attitude. And AT&T is the worst.

The latest news I've seen about the exclusive deal through 2012 is that it was official, but no one knows if that contract is still valid.

Once Verizon gets the new iPhone, this won't even be a contest. However, I do like Android OS, so I'm on the fence for this poll.

What exactly does the Android do that the iPhone doesn't?
2 things I know people are going to say is flash and multi-tasking. iPhone will have multi-tasking ohhhh around june 8th when the 4.0 software comes out. As far as flash, who cares about flash? Is flash, something that eats up battery life faster then pacman, a real deal breaker?

Some people prefer Android simply because it's open source which allows people to release their own modifications of it (hundreds are available at www.androidspin.com). Android has a notifications drawer across the top that the user slides down to access new texts, missed calls, facebook updates, installed programs, etc. rather than having to go back to the home screen each time. Users can customize their home screens by placing widgets, quick-call shortcuts, and program shortcuts. It's got a different feel to it that some people prefer.

Interesting. I've been wanting to try either the Incredible or the Evo lately. They both look like awesome phones but the battery life scares me away.

I played with a Droid Incredible in a Verizon store the other day. It's super fast and really nice. My girlfriend is going to give Sprint the 30-day trial with the Evo when it comes out.

Do you have 4G in Dallas yet or are you one of the cities they're supposed to add this year? I read a list a couple weeks ago and they had Cleveland on that list so that was the first thing that got me interested in the Evo.
It's difficult to compare these because iPhone OS is only available in a closed system under one piece of hardware, whereas Android is out there in 10 different flavors on a plethora of devices, each only using the portions of Android that fit their hardware specs.

Is it for real coming out around then? Last thing I heard was summer but no specific date.
Ohh and I voted iPhone since anything with the Apple logo on it, I must have.

The iPhone is always announced around WWDC which runs like June 7th-9th or something like that and the new iPhones will ship with 4.0. It's a logical guess but definitely a safe bet.

GET. OUT.
:-p
I have a lot of respect for Android. It's very open ended, and works really well. But it being open ended is a bad thing for most of it's users. Most people aren't nerds. They don't realize what they are doing when they install some of the junk that's in the android marketplace. Then they get frustrated when their phone runs terrible or it's battery dies quickly. This will lead to people not buying another android phone.
Apple is actually really smart in the way they make their phones powerful yet simple. And for those savy enough to know what they are doing, there's jailbreaking. I love my iPhone. The hardware is just sexy.
This all comes from a person who as a whole, hates Apple.

We've got 4G. Clear is doing heavy advertising here, and Sprint is a primary shareholder of Clear, so they will use compatible technology.

Android ≠ Droid
Android is an open source mobile operating system developed by Google. It is not a phone, and is not to be confused with the Droid, a phone manufactured by Motorola that runs Google's Android.

iPhone. I very rarely have issues with AT&T in these parts and it's extremely user-friendly for what I want/need it for.
Do people even still buy actual blackberries with the rollerballs? If so, why?

I can't really function without my phone honestly. It helps with everything; school, work, music, band, social life. What else could you ask for. Plus it's fun and great to use.The only thing I could do without is AT&T.

Apparently the HTC Evo 4G thread I made got deleted? haha
Is Android not allowed to have separate threads? Not much msg board activity about the Android phones, but this poll is a lot closer than I expected.
I just switched from Verizon and picked up the HTC Evo 4G. This thing is a friggin dream. The amount of customization is unreal. I was explaining the widgets and home screens to an iphone user and they said their phone could do all of that too until I told them the multiple screens weren't just a bunch on app icons.
I think the Evo 4G will be the best phone out for a month or two and then Verizon will put out a couple of phones with 2.2 on them. Once the Evo gets the 2.2 upgrade I think it will be better than the two motorola phones that verizon should be putting out with 2.2 again. However, the way technology works I am not expecting my Evo to be the best phone on the market for very long......and we dont even know EVERYTHING the iPhone HD has to offer yet:(

Android. Hands down, no contest. AT&T is an awful network, and everything they do to try and sell you on "The Greatest Phone Ever" (I have heard a couple reps say that) makes me want to throw them into a slow burning fire, with millions of fire ants biting them, and a horse constantly shitting on their face. As for Apple, love the laptops & OSX. I'm writing this off my Macbook right now actually. Absolutely hate what they do with the iPhone and the App Store. It's so closed off. It's like 1984: Cell Phone Edition. And the fact that they pride themselves that they have SO MANY more games than Android. If I want games, I have a 360 for a reason. If I really want to play something on the go, I'll borrow my girlfriend's DS.
I realize I might sound like a fanboy, but I'm really not. I just absolutely hate AT&T & the iPhone. I actually currently have the HD2 on T-Mo. I upgraded to it from my iPhone 3G. It's really nice to go from a phone where you have basically no options to change anything (even when jailbroken you still have fairly limited options, at least I did), to a phone that lets you customize everything. And install new ROMs & skins.

So true. My friend has a Backflip and is always jealous of the ROMs and root software I'm putting on my myTouch 3G. I looked at rooting his phone and, while it's possible, there's almost no community writing custom ROMs for it, so you basically have to make your own or stick with a rooted version of the stock shit.
