So, I will be visiting your lovely country next summer for eight weeks to teach. The trip itself is free so I'll have a bit of disposable income. What are some fun things to do that I shouldn't miss out on.

Note: I'll be in Brisbane the first week and then in Sydney for the next seven.

Wow. You can't ride kangaroos.

Brisbane is kind of meh, IMO, but Sydney is amazing. Just FYI.

1. Go to the Whitsunday Islands and do some sailing (you can get 3 days/2 nights all inclusive for like $200 USD)
2. Hit up all the Sydney beaches (there are a multitude, each with its own vibe)
3. Take a surfing lesson, lots of places to do that
4. Go to Melbourne, it's fucking sweet and very European like, way different from Sydney. Do the Great Ocean Road tour while you're down there.
5. See the Great Barrier Reef, but try to do it not from Cairns -- as a city Cairns is absolute shit, spend as little time there as possible.
6. Get into the Outback, something I wish I'd done when I was there.

If you want more specifics, let me know.

It just had been bothering me lately when people are like, "Hey I have this really specific thing that I could use some advice on" then other people come in and say "Bullshit statement X" that adds nothing.

Note: this does not apply for medical requests in the PL forum, because anyone who tries to get advice on depression from a message board is fucked beyond belief.

I agree Cairns is a bit of a shit city unless your there for like 3 or 4 days you can bang out all the extreme stuff, I was there for a long weekend and bungy jumped, sky dived, white water rafted, did the great barrier reef and had a pub crawl. Gotta hit up the Woolshed if your going up there, gets pretty loose. Depending on the season gotta hit up an AFL Footy game, pretty much their answer to the NFL, easy to understand and a fun watch. Melbourne has a lot of great venues and what not check out their scene very music friendly area. And no doubt while your in Sydney your gonna check out Sydney and Darling Harbour, gotta do the Torronga Zoo in Sydney I went to a few Zoos over ther and I thought this one waqs awesome. Had to take a boat over and ride a Gondola just to get there. I was in Melbourne for a semester abroad so if you got any questions PM me

It's gorgeous here and you'll have fun. Shame you're coming in winter though because right now I think the max temp is about 20 degrees... it's also been raining for the past two days (here in Sydney) Nevertheless - we are in Australia so if it's an alright day you can probably go to the beach anyway haha and I'll reccomend Coogee just because it's the best.

Clubs/bars/pubs are fairly nice around here and it's something to do at night and you can always hit the city out of pure boredom. It really depends on where you're living though. I'm going to assume east so please don't go to the Eastern, Ivy, Soho, Home or Candys haha. Cargo and Lowenbrau are alright and I think most of your time will be spent on the normal touristy stuff - climbing the harbor bridge, visiting the opera house, the zoo, the blue mountains... I don't know - if I were a first timer here I'd want to go to like the Gaelic or Manning and just see what life is really like here. And importantly, most importantly - please stay away from all bogan pubs.

Hope you enjoy it here :-)

Yes, the US/North American summer is the Australian winter, so July/August down there would be the bad times to be hitting the beaches (at least in Sydney/Melbourne) while Dec-Feb is perfect beach weather.

Sky diving is like $225 USD, from what I remember.

Skydiving was 300 aussie which at the time was around 200-220 American, I did all this stuff during a tour, I reccomend you check out extreme tours and packages that can organize weekend trips for oyu, liek someone previously said the Whitsundays, place was beautiful, Clear water, great views, awesome beaches, can go sailing, jet ski, snorkel, pretty much everything, its a good weekend destination

Mm definitely go to Melbourne. And yep, it's late Autumn(fall?) right now, June marks the start of our winter haha welcome to the Southern Hemisphere. If you're a teacher it's generally fine and as long as you stay away from a couple of clubs that are just full of 16/17 yo kids you'll be fine but um, we're pretty chilled about drinking here and I've had some drinks with my old teachers and current lecturers.

Taronga Zoo and opera house are always fun. Oh and if you get a chance for a weekend trip go to the Hunter Valley (Sydney) or the Yarra (if you're going to Melbourne anyway - it's only an hour away) :-) Have funn
