FOX is aiming for this Steven Spielberg produced show to air mid-season, assuming it's completed by that point.
They were looking at Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) to take the lead but he has apparently turned it down. Same with Kevin Bacon. Too bad about Chandler. He's great on FNL and I'd love to see him on another great show. I actually had no idea that Kevin Bacon was even approached until I read this (http://www.thewrap.com/ind-column/exclusive-chandler-bacon-pass-foxs-terra-nova-17111) article.
Plot:
In the year 2149 the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped, overcrowded and over-polluted. With the majority of plant and animal life extinct, devotion to science has brought mankind to the brink of destruction, but has also provided its only hope for salvation. Knowing there is no way to reverse the damage to the planet in "Terra Nova," a coalition of scientists has managed to open up a fracture in the space-time continuum, creating a portal to prehistoric Earth. This doorway leads to an amazing world in "Terra Nova", one that allows for a last-ditch effort to save the human race...possibly changing the future by correcting the mistakes of the past.

Looks like...
Chris Brancato, a writer whose credits include “Eve,” a first-season episode of “The X-Files,” is among the writers just laid off at Fox’s upcoming dinosaur drama “Terra Nova.” The layoffs apparently have to do with the bulk of the series’ first season being moved from midseason to next autumn (with only its two-hour first episode airing in May).
Brannon Braga, co-creator of “Star Trek: Enterprise,” “Threshold” and the TV version of “FlashForward,” remains the series showrunner.
Co-showrunner David Fury (“Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Lost”) left the series some time ago, but his departure apparently had more to do with creative differences than scheduling.

Series premiere next Monday at 8/7 central on Fox. Stoked.
Fox signed the first 13 episodes (season 1) without seeing a pilot because the sets cost too much to build/tear down in Australia.

Having a 2 hour long series premiere is a ballsy fucking move. Show just looks corny to me but I'm also not a fan of the niche they are going for.

I think this is pretty fucking awful so far. I realize it's a tv show, but the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park looked more realistic in 1993.
First little bit was some pretty shite acting, but it got better by the end of the episode. Also, liking the storyline so far, and whatever the hell the sixers are up to. It's looking like it'll get pretty action packed.
I'll probably watch a few episodes. First was decent. Hope the story and acting picks up some though.

Random (and pointless) story: I had to work on a group project for my last Soc class, and it involved coming up with laws and such for a whole new planet -- which we also had to name -- that we'd be moving to and start from scratch. The name, obviously, ended up being "Terra Nova," so it was funny to watch previews for this only a few weeks after the class was over, especially given the premise of the show.
Anyway, I am most definitely going to check this out.

Show will likely be cancelled by the end of the year or season.
Thought the story line was pretty corny/cliche with the rebellious son, mom and dad working in separate places with the potential for cheating, etc. The one thing I have to give to them is the CGI. Those shots at the beginning of the futuristic city left me in awe; same can be said for some of the scenes in the jungle and the final scene with the moon

The biggest thing the show has against it right now is the fact that it is going up against so much stiff competition. They may need to move the show into another time slot at some point. The show could have so much appeal to a real broad audience so I do find it hard to believe it will be a season only deal in the end.

they sent a 'beacon' back in time first to see if it worked, and how far back they would be sending people. also, they wanted to make sure it wouldnt cause a split timeline. or something. they didnt do much explaining, but thats the gist i believe.

when did they contact anyone from the future?
when did they contact anyone from the future?
I think he's talking about Taylor mentioning that he doesn't know who to trust in the future, implying there's still contact. I read a theory yesterday about the Sixers being freedom fighters and trying to destroy the rift because the probe they never found actually ended up in the future, and that's what all those drawings were on the rocks...someone relaying the information back to them. Sounds pretty shaky, but it's pretty obvious to me Taylor's not necessarily a "good" guy.
Edit: Downloaded the episode for free off iTunes. Watching it now, hoping to make sense of some of the stuff I missed while watching the premiere.

I think the beacon never showed up, so they know they are in an alternate timeline and not going to fuck anything up and cause their entire civilization to never exist. At least I think. Wasn't really paying too much attention at that point.

What he said. There was some throwaway line that I don't remember exactly. There has to be some form of contact so Terra Nova has an idea of when the next pilgrimage is coming and what kind of personnel they'll be receiving.

i just now got to watching the premiere and it blew my expectations out of the water. the production quality was fantastic and the graphics pretty great. The early story and character development was really good, and i didn't feel it was that cliche, other than the son kind of flying off the handle for no reason. I think this series has a lot of promise. It has a lot of obstacles too though, hopefully it pulls though. This could be a fantastic series if they continue to do it right.

ahh that jogged my memory... yeah the one security guy said 'they're sending another 100+ people' or something, and he was like we dont have time to accomodate that many people on such short notice. obvi paraphrasing but yeah it seems they do have some form of contact.

i dont go into any tv series that uses cgi and expect much so i wasnt disappointed... the only show who did a halfway decent job with it was BSG.
If they're in a new time stream then there wouldn't be a future to communicate with, right? Isn't this new time stream essentially an alternate universe? I'm thinking they are either in the same time stream and that info will be revealed in a later episode or they've got a huge plot hole on their hands.

That's actually a theory I've been reading about. That the Sixers aren't "bad guys," but instead more like freedom fighters, because they're in the same time stream (which is what is being told on the rocks at the waterfall by Taylor's son), so they'll be trying to take over Terra Nova once they have the full answer to the whole thing. I'm guessing it'll be brought up later in the season, more than likely, the episode before the finale.

Being that it cost so much to produce each episode (3-4 million per), Fox is better off with an episodic show for rerun value then a serial. You'll always have a bit of serial story behind the episodes main issue though, so that's something. It's been said already the show is episodic as well.

I'm losing interest rapidly in this show. The simple fact that it's episodic is the sole source of it's lameness. Dramas like this work best as serials. Oh well.
I liked the premiere, should I catch up?
So I just started watching and recently caught up with the show. Gotta say I loved the pilot, it was basically Jurassic Park meets Avatar.
However, the next two episodes after that were standalone stories with some very contrived writing and rather large plot holes which right now are explained with "It's sci-fi". The characters right now are pretty generic, save for Commander Taylor who at least has some charisma and mystery around him.
I'm hoping they can maintain the serialised elements that they're bringing in with the latest episode about the child runaway. Besides the pilot it was probably the best episode so far, minus the ridiculous motivation of going into the dinosaur-inhabited jungle by yourself on a hunch that the child spy was being threatened to do it because of a drawing she made.
Right now the show's tone is quite schizophrenic. It's about survival in a hostile new world, but the familiy and teen drama elements make the world feel way too safe. The Lost-style conspiracy and mystery elements keep the show interesting but right now they're only dripping in. And I know there are budget restrictions, but this show has to never forget that it takes place in a world with freakin' DINOSAURS!!! If you can't deliver this then you might as well have just thrown them on a deserted island.
From what I understand, it is possible to send messages back to 2149, however materials such as supplies and people can only be ferried one way (from the future). The show hasn't explained why this is, however one user on The Onion TV club had an elegant solution:
The Black Market dealer is able to send communications back (and regularly does so for the Sixers apparently) since he was going to send a message back to allow Mopey Boy's girl through. Presumably, it's a matter of not having enough bandwidth upstream to do anything but send data, which makes pretty good sense (especially if the future portal is forced open with energy when pilgrimages are sent back - Terra Nova wouldn't have enough power to do much more than open a pinhole for data to stream through).
And another user in reply:
You've officially put more thought into this than the writers, and even come up with a plausible explanation. If it takes a shit-ton of energy to send people and materiel through the portal, then Terra Nova wouldn't have enough energy to do the reverse. That's actually pretty clever, and it opens the future possibility of a two-way portal once TN is established enough to generate the requisite power. Well done!
Hopefully the writers and production will deliver what they've been promising, which in this interview seems positive:
http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/10/21/terra-nova-interview/
I really like the concept and universe, and I'm hoping the show can hit a good stride and bring all these elements together.

The problem is that absolutely nothing has happened. It took 8 episodes to understand the back story of what mystery was introduced in the pilot. All we get is the typical problem-of-the-week, with almost no major character or plot progression.

I was so excited for that show. If it got picked up I'd probably finish the season off and see where they started to take it. As it is now, I don't think it will come back and I didn't care for the format all that much.
