View Full Version : Do you believe that you have to goto a certain college, to root for the team?

I was reading on fightonstate.com after the ND/PSU game to see what was being said and a lot of people there seem to use the arguement in regards to ND fans.. "If they aren't students or alum, they have no right to cheer for the team.".
It's as if to them, Subway Alumini are absolutely worthless. Which personally, I find to be complete horseshit. Especially with a school like Notre Dame. It's not the easiest and most affordable University to go to and I'd highly doubt some of PSU Alum claiming this shit would be able to get in the school if their life depended on it. I know I couldn't
I wouldn't say it as strongly as they did, but i do believe that you should really be cheering for either a university you went to, or a local university. The only exception may be if one of your parents went to the school. If i were you though, dont pay too much attention to that website, the comment seems to be written with a lot of spite.

that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard.
i never played for the steelers. so should i not be allowed to cheer for them?
same thing basically. there's no rules on which teams you can and cannot love.

do you see the same thing being said about pro sports? no. it's very wrong.

that makes no fucking sense. if you like the team, why shouldn't you be allowed to cheer for them? i always cheer for UCLA...i dont live anywhere near there or know anyone who went there, but i like them. but based on your argument, im not allowed to cheer for them. WHY?

I played for The Steelers. So I've got a right to cheer them on. :shrugs:

I can understand maybe if ND fans were talking shit all over a generally penn state alum board. And Notre Dame does have alot of bandwagon fans, but that should not discredit the fans that have always followed the team even if they did not go there.

ND has way too many bandwagon fans but then again you should be allowed to cheer for who you want. Though I've always thought with colleges you should have some kind of connection with the college to even care. Not like oh I like Brady Quinn...goooooooooo irish.

Yeah, I have family that went to Penn State, but I've also always rooted for FSU since 1991.
I stuck it out through the Chris Rix years. I think I paid my dues. And I also got into FSU but decided not to go there.

that's really stupid. uconn's football team sucks so i root for schools my friends go too--UWisc, Penn State, Notre Dame; ya know, competent football schools. You can root for whomever the fuck you want.

hahah all teams that play each other.
I think there is a difference, you can root for them to win, but you really don't have any bragging rights if they do. I think that is how it goes.

nova's football team is complete ass and no fun to go to the games, etc. which means iw ant to root for a bigtime school

no i know, im just saying...it should be my decision either way. i chose to follow notre dame because one of my best friends is likie obsessed with them and has made me watch games with him teh past 2-3 years
like someone said, i never played for the dolphins, sooo that means i cant root for them? its the same thing really. its more of teh team than the school, because im not a big fan of the school of notre dame anyways.

Yeah, I see the argument, but college football is a little different because if Villanoa was a D-1A school, you would be a fan of them just because it is your school and you take pride in that. NFL is different because it is professional. The opportunity to have any real affiliation with them is slim to none.
I'm pretty sure ImIrish06 or whatever roots for Notre Dame in every single sport. He may not go there, but you know he does have room to brag. If you stick with a team for atleast 5-10 years if you haven't gone there or you have no affiliation you have room to brag, just because there is a good chance that you stayed loyal to them.
But there is a difference and I think the argument is not about people that root for them. But Notre Dame gets alot of bandwagon fans that like to talk shit. Those are the fans being talked about. The fans that disappeared and remerged last year.
i go to penn state, and i think the football team fucking blows.
i root for the same college team since i was little in every sport (basketball and football mostly)
and thats kentucky, im not ashamed either.

I don't go to Michigan state or Western Michigan, but i still root for them. WMU is here in my hometown and i've always been a Spartan fan because my family never liked Michigan.

Of course I love PSU, we all know that.
But I also like Nebraska and when it comes down to it, I root for OSU when they're not playing PSU.
Same with Nova and West Virginia, and I have no connections to WVU.

Yeah...it's much easier to be a fan of the teams at you school, but if your school is a D-III nothingness, you have to go elsewhere for options.
If you're loyal to the team year in and out, geography doesn't matter...it just tends to be that bandwagon fans exist

My family has always been Notre Dame fans so I was just kinda born into it. I never really had a choice hahaha

Nah that's bullshit. I understand it, but I think as long as it isn't purely bandwagon/fairweather support, then it's fine.

I root for Miami in every college sport and have forever (both my parents went there). I don't go there because it is not public and is expensive but they are still my team. and I think you can root for whoever you want.
my school doesnt have a football team thus making it necessary to root for another school

As long as you support your own athletics--if they have them--its fine.

Yeah, I don't think that the argument for enrollment/alumni status validating the right to be a fan is a very good one. I don't go to Auburn, my parents did, and I've loved them since before I can remember, but I don't go there and likely won't. I also like Ole Miss a lot. I root for them whenever they aren't playing Auburn. I have absolutely no ties to that school, but I've loved them since I was a little kid, going to Auburn games. Bandwagon fans are ridiculous, but a rule that one has to have a solid tie to a school in order to be a fan is even more so.

i don't see how that's necessary. i really don't follow or root for the college i played for and went to, and it's just down the road from me. even when i was still going there, once i left the team i never followed them again. i've always been all about ohio state.

Neither does mine. And for that matter, the closest D-I football team (Buffalo) isn't relevant at all. THEREFORE I will root for whoever the fuck I want.
I watch more NFL than NCAA football anyways. I usually am watching NCAA to see future pros.
