alrighty so i have an assignment for my AP US History class in which i have to write a 7-10 page paper comparing two historical figures. i don't know what i was thinking, but i picked Aaron Burr and Huey Long for my two figures (we had to pick pairs from a list, and most of my choices had been picked, so i started panicking). the thing is, after doing research on both, i've come to the conclusion that comparing them is going to be something of a stretch.

i have a couple things to talk about so far, but i'd appreciate the input of any history buffs. i just feel like there's some glaring similarity between the two that i'm missing.

one was shot, one shot somebody?

haha that was actually something i planned on mentioning in my paper at some point. a nice little fun fact for the conclusion perhaps?

here's what i have for similarities so far:

1. senators
2. presidential candidates
3. involved with conspiracies against the government
4. opposed central banking system
5. eventually broke with presidents' ideologies
6. put on trial and declared "innocent" (Long impeached for misuse of state funds, impeachment failed; Burr put on trial for treason; acquited)
7. Long was a Democrat, supported complete government control of wealth distribution and business, and wanted to distribute wealth to the poor; Burr was a Democratic-Republican, wanted to protect the working class.

it's something, i suppose.

That's the worst comparison ever, but what you have is fine.

Excellent book on Huey Long: Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression

Long didn't just break with the President's ideologies, the dude straight up turned democracy on it's head and ruled Louisiana with an iron fist for a good 10-15 years before he got shot. He did a lot of good things for the poor/working class in the state, but he also continually disenfranchised African Americans and cleansed anyone from politics in Louisiana (or at least those in the Democratic Party) who didn't agree with him in 100% of everything.

These were the first two things that came to mind.

yeah, i kind of capitalized on those two points in my paper. i finished the bloody thing, but it was so painful. i still see very few similarities, even after writing nine pages on the two figures. such a silly comparison.

I'm glad you finished it! Nine pages on just two figures is kind of ridiculous though...

agreed. my history teacher told my class that we'd "shift gears" after the AP test and take things nice and slow. and a week later we get into class and she says "okay, we have a lot to do in the next few weeks, guys!" and hands us this project. lovely woman, really, but she seems to be a bit of a liar.

lol, thanks Kaitlin. if only i could've thrown that into my paper somehow.

so i ended up with a B+ on the paper, which is okay i guess. the teacher hates by guts, and she shows it with every chance she gets, so it could have gone a lot worse. i'll take it, especially considering it was the worst idea for a paper ever, and she didn't give me any help with it.
