Lennon takes this, having a stellar career with the Beatles and then an amazing solo career for ten years after that. The tragedy of his murder just adds to his legend. Cash lived a long hard life, and his music reflects that. It is amazing but I do not think it is diverse or groundbreaking or influential as the material Lennon produced. John Bonham was one of the sickest drummers of the 70's, probably of all time, but his career was never able to fully develop. John Paul Jones was probably the least important member of LZ, and I can't get behind Vultures at all. John Nolan couldn't hold a candle to these other musicians. And John Adams and John Smith? What are they doing on a poll full of musicians. As far as historical relevance, they will probably overshadow every single one of these artists (except maybe Lennon), as none of the others have had any major impact on history, only music. The Beatles created an entire culture; if blues and folk are the roots of rock and roll, then the Beatles are the trunk. All rock music branches from what they pioneered or perfected. And Lennon's efforts at promoting peace and "spreading love" after his stint with the Beatles definitely solidified his place in history, as he was one of the most active voices against Vietnam, or any war, ever. "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine" are good examples of this.

John Lennon is great don't get me wrong, but he's just a tad overrated. I mean he went from a greaser in the 50's to a proper bowl cut young man in the early 60's, then to a hippie in the 70's. Seems to me like he went with what was popular back in the day. All that being said, I have a good deal of respect for the man, he was extremely gifted. Johnny Cash was raw and just crazy though.

Haha, I guess he just doesn't stand out as much. But it is really tough to rank the members of Zeppelin; harder than ranking the Beatles individually. I change what I said and switch to Robert Plant then. I am a huge John Bonham fan, I think he's just relentless. But I suppose I would have to pick Jimmy Page as most important since he started the band and wrote most of the music. How would you rank them?

it's just that even if you think john lennon is overrated, his actual merits would still be much more respectable than john nolan's.

I never discredited him as a songwriter, nor did I say Nolan was superior. Nolan's simply the one that matters most to me, I never said he was the most prolific, that would simply be false. Don't read too much into a simple post.

when said post expresses the opinion that john lennon is overrated, it can be assumed you are speaking about level of talent. then, when you reveal your vote for another, it can also be assumed you are making that decision based on level of talent as well. so, in effect, it comes across as you saying one is superior to the other. i was merely making a correlation.

The poll's closed, I didn't vote at all. I wasn't intending to connect my Nolan comment with the Lennon comment either.
