So, tomorrow, May 21, 2010, is the 30th anniversary of Star Wars V. I am heading to Disney World to celebrate kickoff Star Wars Weekends, and the anniversary of one of the greatest films of all time. As I watched the film for the first time in quite a while, the other day, it dawned upon me how Irvin Kershner crafted this film from Lucas' image and Richard Marquand crafted into Return of the Jedi. I remembered the first time I saw Empire and how it impacted me at a young age (8 or 9). As a stand alone movie, it feels so right. Nothing concluded, but wonderfully done.

Hopefully, I am meeting Billy Dee Williams sometime this weekend.

If time travel is ever invented, I want to go back to opening night of Empire and see the pure shock and awe delivered with the "I am your father" line.

I've never seen the older star wars films. Not to say the new ones were any good, I should get to the others though.

I think the lack of Lucas was the reason this was so incredibly good.

I just finished watching Return of the Jedi for the first time in awhile and even that feels overblown compared to Empire. There is just something about it that works so well.

I am incredibly jealous.

Easily my favorite of the series.

I completely agree.

Yes, you most definitely should. There really is no comparison in terms of quality.

I just finished watching Return of the Jedi for the first time in awhile and even that feels overblown compared to Empire. There is just something about it that works so well.

I think part of the reason for this is that after Empire, Lucas probably felt that they needed some larger than life, exaggerated conclusion to the saga in order to "out-do" Empire. Unfortunately, as we have seen, the idea that bigger is better is something that has continued to plague Lucas. He fails to see how the ability to relate to the humanistic qualities of characters (even in something as "out-there" as a futuristic space epic), and a well crafted script is far more important.

I still love Jedi, and consider it to be a great film and a beyond adequate conclusion to the trilogy, but it doesn't touch Empire as a stand alone film.

I wonder Sheldon and Leonard never thought about it, great idea!

I love how in Lost, Hurley writes Empire Strikes Back when they travel back in time.

ITT: poppa Q discovers that George Lucas only directed Star Wars, and not Empire or Hope.

Of course the best Star Wars movie. Luke was a boy in the first one and kind of a pansy in the last one. This one made him a rogue who actually hung against Vader for a bit.
