New Found Glory (http://www.absolutepunk.net/newfoundglory) - Coming Home
Record Label: Interscope Records
Release Date: 9/19/2006
New Found Glory have always been a musical-staple of my summers. Since the release of Nothing Gold Can Stay, so many years ago, it seems that when the weather gets warm the pop-punk goodness of NFG is always close in tow. However, the band's latest album hits us as the summer months fade and the air bends to the onslaught of fall. Incidentally, the band's musical thermometer is still intact. Instead of an album full of summer-fist-pumping-anthems they've released the perfect music by which to watch the leaves fall from the trees.
The changing of seasons seems to be the perfect metaphor for New Found Glory; however, it's important to note that while the color of leaves may change, the underlying nature never does.
Being one of the first bands this reviewer ever really fell in love with, and being one of the bands that helped shape the musical taste in his youth; it's only fitting that the band's slight stylistic changes would be right in tune with this reviewer's own musical taste changes. While the choruses and sing-a-long hooks could compete with the best on any of their previous albums - it's the slower melodic approach to the songs that truly makes the album come alive and fully breathe. Taking a cue from "The Story So Far" (one of my favorite NFG songs), the entire album moves in and out in a pulse-like-manner.
The stand out tracks include the lead single, "It's Not Your Fault," the title track, "Coming Home," the insanely catchy, "Familiar Landscapes" and the brilliant closer, "Boulders."
It's crucial you abandon any pre-conceived expectations for this album. If you're anticipating the band's previous albums re-hashed, you're going to be completely let-down. However, if you're looking for an album that has maturity (I know that word is overused) and still contains the hooks and catchy nature of pop-punk, this is sure to be one of your favorites. Hand claps, gang vocals, acoustic guitars, piano, strings? I think that if you're not singing along, you secretly want to.
The flaws in the album are present; however, they don't detract from my enjoyment of the disc. The often nasal quality of Jordan's voice (that spawned a million copy-cats) is actually subdued on this album. While NFG's lyrics have never been brilliant prose, they have always been some of the few I can instantly relate to - this trend continues. Although there are a few moments that border on cheese. The only other noticeable short-coming is that the songs tend to blend together the more you listen, each being almost an extension of the others. The simple fact is if you can buy into the band's "changed" sound you're going to be a huge fan of this album. There will be some who are incapable of this, and that's perfectly fine, they still have a whole back-catalog of material.
Back when New Found Glory's Self-Titled album was released there weren't many that gave it a chance to be one of the building-blocks for an entire genre. However, in hindsight, it appears as though that disc may have had more of an impact than anyone ever could have guessed. While Coming Home may not have the same cataclysmic result (pun intended), and it isn't the best album ever (much like their ST), it most certainly has the qualities that could make it a classic in time.

Nice nice, I really dig this album a lot.
Maybe I misread but I thought yesterday you said you weren't a big fan.
really good record, listen to ngcs and then coming home and its really amazing to see how much they've changed w/out really changing at all (if that makes sense). A lot of bands could take a page out of nfg's book and learn that you can still maintain the things that makes your band great and still mature. A lot of bands seem to have trouble with this and Im just happy nfg made a good record. I love the title track, so catchy.

And I love this album. It is so well-crafted. The production is excellent and even though the lyrics are quite cheesy at times I still can relate to them so well.
I love it when you review things Tate.
Good album, I can't wait to pick it up next week. Boulders is my favorite song on it as of right now.

I don't think cataclysm is the pun you intended. Catalyst and cataclysm are two different things.
Having said that, I think the review is spot-on. I like the fact that it doesn't have a lot of the superfluous words and hyperbole that are usually tossed into these reviews.

perhaps, or I could have made it up completely.
I have no idea where I rank this among NFG albums... It is so different and that makes it difficult to try and compare it to their other albums.

I know they're two different things - but they sound/look the same ... guess "pun" isn't the right word to use for that sort of thing, o well.
Great review, btw. I'm liking this album a lot more with each listen. I LOVE his voice on this.
I love the "ooohh ohh oh ohh's" in the song Coming Home.

I love the album. The guitar tones they use are way different than what they normally do. I think it makes the album even that much better. The production is pretty much spot on as well.

once again the extended review leak does not work for me at all....
I really like this album. The 2nd half of the album is suprisingly strong, and the album is very enjoyable. NFG does not let you down. I love how I can still listen to new NFG albums years after I first heard them.

Connected is probably my favorite song so far, with On My Mind and Coming Home in a very close tie for second.

How is that not representative? Blink182 and MxPx would be 10's - NFG and STD would be under that, and NuFan and Lagwagon probably below them.

I've been listening to New Found Glory since NGCS came out and I agree wholeheartedly that the maturity word has been thrown around a lot but they really have grown. People have been joking with me that I have matured along with NFG. I can't wait for next Tuesday and for their tour.
I got this today, but the release from Japan. It has 3 extra bonus tracks as well!! Bet you AP'ers don't have those!!!
Great album so far, definitely a change, but in a good way. They are really maturing.

Alright bucko, calm it down about 14 and a 1/2 notches. It's all subjective. I miss their fast tempo songs, but I really like the way they have progressed(god forbid I should use the M word).
On that note, I think the review was a great read. I thought this album was going to be a letdown after I heard the word on the street that they mellowed out. But shit son, what a grandiose CD. I should have known these guys never disappoint.

I always enjoy reading your reviews, Jason. I don't know, I guess it's because you have the most power here, so it's always nice to see where the hand lies.
Anyway, I am looking very forward to this album. I don't think my expectations have ever been for them to redo any prior releases; I've always seen NFG as a pop-punk band that can change their sound to accomodate their older fans while doing something that isn't the same as they've always done.

I Don't like how they put an octave-lower voice behind Jordan's ALL THE TIME Noticed that too. It does seem a little redundant to me, but it doesn't really bother me.
Ever since I first heard a tiny snippet of "It's Not Your Fault", I've been back and forth between super-excited about this album and fearing that it might suck. But I'm listening to it now on Purevolume, and I take back all of my doubt. New Found Glory has always had a sort of "honorary status" as my favorite band. What I mean by this is that even if I go for months without listening to them, I can always come back and totally get excited about them again.

I see where you are coming from with this review although I do think there is alot of bias based around it (mind you I am like that towards this band also having grown up listening to them), I have had the privelege of hearing the new album and i must say I was like alot of other NFG fans expecting a typical follow on of catalyst or sticks and stones, and of course one cant be expected to believe and band is going to write the same record twice (which they havent), I was expecting big things but in all honesty there are some very catchy tunes on coming home but I think the album falls short as each song seems to run into the next (exceptions being "It's Not Your Fault" and "Boulders") and the album sadly stays at a fairly constant slow paced tempo with not so much of the slightest hint of a classic fast paced NFG song, it is almost as if they just wrote an album that will just fit in amongst the rest of the carbon copy bands out there, and from NFG I personally expecte more, this is album is by no means terrible, but as a huge NFG I felt extremely let down by this effort.

They just changed their sound a bit.
At first, 'Coming Home' gave me the same impression as I had when I first listened to 'On A Wire' by The Get Up Kids after being used to the sound from 'Something To Write Home About.'

gotta say, went out and got my hands on this because the review got me intrigued, and i'm really fucking impressed. they were one of the first bands that got me into the "scene", if you will, and i don't listen to them much any more 'cause i can't stand his voice for more than about 8 seconds, but they really blew me away with this CD. if i hadn't know it was them, i don't think i would have picked some of these tracks out as even being the same band initially 'cause Jordan knocked that nasally quality out of his voice.
great stuff.
great review. its very true about nfg being a summer band and with albums gone by that were released in summertime, the music reflected this. as this was released at the back end of summer i think its great how the music reflects this time of year completely. i think 'make your move' is incredibly catchy. the whole album is great and the b sides as always are awesome. cant wait to see them play this stuff live.

i haven't heard the new album. i have just heard the single "its not your fault." my opinion about nfg is as follows.... i truly felll in love with nfg with songs like "the goodbye song" and "2s and 3s", "3rd and long" and "sincerely me" these are some of my favorite songs of all time, and definately my favorite nfg songs. sticks and stones grew on me over the course of me listening to it non stop while playing gta 3. eventually i came to enjoy sticks and stones quite a bit. as much as i tried, i could not ever truly get into catalyst. it just seemed to border on pop more than punk for me. i miss the old "grunge" sound of the old tracks with semi-sloppy guitar riffs, and more painfull lyrics. catalyst seemed to me that the band was leaning more towards mainstream popular music. i found myself unable to relate to the band more and more. "its not your fault" seems to just further this new direction that will leave 14 year old girls everywhere nodding their heads up and down at there "oh so punkish" lives.
in my opinion, nfg kicked a lot of ass back in the day. if by maturing you mean they have learned how to play their instruments perfectly and they taught jordan how to get rid of that nasal sound which i actually enjoyed then yeah.... if by maturing you mean they are getting closer and closer to sounding like a hilary duff album.......then yea.
i want a mature album from nfg like alkaline trio did with crimson. they matured their abilities without completely abandoning what they used to sound like. if this album sounds like i anticipate it to sound like, i might as well go buy the next lindsay lohan album too.

Listened to the ablum 3 times over.... was disappointed pulled out Sticks and Stones, New Found Glory and Nothing Gold Can Stay very impressed :D (in their older stuff that is :P). I have to admit the musics great but its not what im after i realise that bands mature thats cool but nothing takes their place i miss old New Found Glory old Blink old Matchbook Romance... I should probably mature along with the music.

im new to the whole posting thing but i felt i had too about this...this album is the shit! for everyone saying "waah, where are the fast songs?" its like fuck it, this album to me, does seriously remind me of self titled and sticks and stones just a million times better. listen to those albums, yes there are fast songs but its really only like one or two on each record////nfg has always made great rock songs! let the bashing about my comment start .......NOW!
The theme wasn't an amusement park - AT ALL - it was a "scene kid manufacturing plant" - how did you miss that?its easy when you download the CD and dont see the artwork, just the cover

their self titled was the first pop punk cd i bought. although since then i tend to like nothing gold can stay a little bit more, the ST still holds a special place. as for this cd, im with jason in a sense because this cd came a long at a perfect time in my life, much like the ST. i love this cd. leave it to new found glory to once again be the band that follows me through an important part of my life.

After listening to this album, I felt kind of depressed. This is just total speculation, but the topic in the songs, song titles, and even the name of the album, it kind of seems like this may be their last album? I found it depressing just because NFG was one of the first bands that got me into the whole scene like 6 years ago, way back in like HS, it really makes you realize how fast times fly by, and the whole growing up thing.

Tuesday cannot come soon enough. I've avoided listening to any of the songs besides the ones they've released.

Outlandish claim on all accounts.
Tate, were you aware of your name being dropped in the liner notes before you did the review... And did you ever in your wildest dreams think you would be mentinoned by bands like NFG in liner notes 5 years ago? That's gotta be pretty fucking amazing one would think.

This album is good. i'm glad to see them growing as a band, and not just rehashing the same old stuff.

"On My Mind" is the most original and refreshing track i've heard by this band.

awesome review of a stellar abum. when they released Catalyst a few years ago, i wasn't very impressed, but when i popped this album into my stereo, i was blown away. "Coming Home" has moved into the ranks of my favorite NFG songs. like jason said, this was one of the bands that i first got into. they have always been one of my favorites, and, with this album, they may have even moved up a few pegs. pick this up if you don't already have it. i promise you will not be disappointed.

nfg has always been my fav band, i hate it when people criticize them cuz they rock like no other. i relate to all their lyrics and i play air guitar on every song. their live shows, to me personally is better than the cds.

i still cannot stopping listening to this cd. at least once a day. the new found glory did alot of growing up on this album, and i was really impressed by it. At the same time, i think they stayed true to their pop punk roots. way to go guys! p.s. there live performance has improved alot too!

I've only listened to some of this album and its been pretty good. My sister owns all of their albums and while this isn't my favorite its still up there. NGCS was probably my favorite right next to From The Screen to Your Stereo [it just was a creative idea that worked haha]
It's good they've been able to stick to making good music and give everyone what they want without losing their touch with major record labels and blah blah blah

One of my favourite NFG albums. The review pretty much nailed it. I like the subtle changes, it helps me apprciate the different sound/theme of some of their albums more.
I'm surprised the album ranks so low in the list of NFG albums with some fans.
Whoa, I know this is old, but are we listening to the same album? I was pretty angry about the slower tempo of this whole album, the lyrics, and overall abandonment of their own style. I don't know, I really REALLY dislike this album...
EDIT: By the way I'm a long time NFG fan, they were one of my first live shows a while back, and I really really like all their other albums....

This album is perfect. Wasn't a huge NFG fan until this came out. It's seriously so good.

as a complete package, this is my all time NFG record to date. All the tracks fit and their isn't a single bad song here. I know these aren't like some of their early raw gems (as in Winter of 95, You've Got A Friend In PA, Better Off Dead etc) but I really do love this record. People forget their previous 4 albums were all pretty simular sounding so if they didn't change people would have only critisised that. Can't wait for "Not Without A Fight" in march ;-)

Just came back to this album after letting it sit for a year or so. So freakin good. I can't understand how I didn't see more merit in it when it first came out. I am stunned that it took me so long to value it the way I do right now. Its like two NFG albums coming out within a month of each other for me.

Very few bands keep on keeping on and New Found are one of those bands... I actually can't believe there are no reviews on Self Titled, Sticks And Stones or Catalyst but i'm paying my dues and having to write 15 posts before i'm allowed to make any threads, setlists or do any reviews... I'm a very big fan of this band and find alot of there tunes allow me to rock out either driving, skating, surfing or having people over for a few hundred beers...
just came back here to say that i see this album as a masterpiece and one of my favorite albums ever.
