So I'm getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed next week. I'm taking antibiotics and painkillers now for an infection because one of the wisdom teeth was rubbing against my cheek. 2 are showing and won't be a problem, 1 is still under the gum, and the last one is impacted. I'm suppose to be taking the general anesthesia, instead of the local, mainly for the problem teeth. How was everyone else's experience and recovery?
Supposed to get mine out in June, not lookin forward to it but I want to get it out of the way too.

I got mine out this past September. All four were impacted. I took general anesthesia. The surgery and right after the surgery were fine. My mouth was still numb, and so even though I could tell it was swollen, the pain was not too bad. I sang at a wedding less than 24 hours after the surgery! However, once the numbing from surgery wears off, the pain becomes pretty brutal. I was prescribed percocet for pain, and it was helpful but did not completely eliminate it, and it also made me extremely drowsy. However, I went to school all the week after and made it through all my classes and everything.
You'll be fine. Really, it's not that bad. The scariest moment is when you first get home and try to eat something. I don't recommend anything except a milkshake or ice cream or jello or something for the first day. When I first tried to eat after surgery (about 6 hours after, maybe?), I started bleeding and drooling all over the place. It was disgusting. Keep it to very liquid-y foods for the first day. Brushing your teeth is the next worst part, and you slowly need to work up trust to brush over that area again. It took me a few weeks to feel safe to do it again.
Good luck! It sucks, but after a week you'll be totally fine.

got them out three days before christmas. all four. got some gas, and a needle of some numbing shit. i was awake the whole time and it was aweosme. i got to keep them too, it only hurt for like an hour once the sedatives started wearing off so it was like half pain half still numb, then i just took some advil and a painkiller and i was fine. had some milk shakes that night and was eating some wendys chicken nugs by the end of the night. it was awesome
I got mine out last year, and luckily it wasn't bad at all for me. As mentioned above, stick to the liquids, I ate a lot of mashed potatoes and pudding. The painkillers do help though, they knock you out damn good.

i got mine out last fall. worst shit ever. i had all 4 taken out, two were extremely impacted. and one had something to do with my jaw so he was really concerned about that one-and he freaked me out telling me there was a possibility that i would have a numbing sensation there for the rest of my life. haha, i was not fond of that.
the freakiest shit for me was as they were finishing i started to come out of the anesthesia and was hearing heir conversation. apparently i was freaked to the point my heart started to race cause i heard them telling me to calm down. :/
i had an assload of painkillers though and was passed out on the recliner for a few days. the gaping holes in your mouth are not pretty, haha. they gave me a syringe to use after eating to flush the food out, which was extremely helpful.
for a while i did have a weird sensation on the one side of my mouth where they took one out. but it has since gone away.

Suppose to get my out two years ago, but my dad, who after my parents split was supposed to do insurance, failed to make payments, so I lost all insurance, and it didn't happen. So now, I have a crazy tooth coming in sideways, that causes random pain every few weeks, and always causes food to get trapped. Fail. Compared to what COULD happen if you don't get them removed, I'd say that its a good idea to go through with the pain. I'll be happy soon, now that I'm done with college and can get a job with dental care plans.

Mine wasn't bad at all when I got mine out. I had little to no pain. I did take some pain pills but not that often. It was awesome just laying on the couch all day watching movies.

My wife got hers out yesterday. It only took about 45 minutes total and didn't hurt. She did drool for a couple hours afterwards while the numbness wore off. She also got some vicodin and some other painkillers, which I greatly appreciated.

I only had 3 and they were all under the gum so I get general anesthesia. I had no problems at all with the anesthesia but the pain meds they gave me made me sick to my stomach so I switched to regular advil which worked fine. My cheeks swelled and bruised pretty bad but I got out of gym for two weeks. It went all right over all. You should be fine. I suggest soft noodles for a while afterward though.

I got mine out about 4 weeks ago, pretty easy process. None of mine were impacted though and the doctor took all 4 out in about 45 minutes.
Right when I got home I puked up blood. I don't even remember doing it as the anesthesia was still in effect. My mom tried to get me to eat but I just threw that up again. The doctor said I had to eat right when I got home, but it was tough when I was still on drugs and anesthesia.
Went to solid foods the next day, ribs, potatoes and bread. If you're careful enough it's pretty painless, but eat what your doctor tells you to eat. Mine told me to return to solids the day after surgery.
After 5-7 days I got a very disgusting taste in my mouth, but once I got the syringe it went away. The syringe isn't bad at all.
The pain completely went away after about 1.5 weeks. I'm just glad it's over. Good luck and enjoy the ride :)

When I got mine out, I got 2 dry sockets (both sides on the bottom — basically scabs don't form and the bone is exposed). 750-mg Vicodin barely helped, it took the edge off the pain but it was still a horrible, horrible ache. This happened Saturday so I had to wait til Monday to go in and have them do something about it.
That Sunday was one of the worst days of my life.
Oh and also the upped Vicodin dose made me constantly nauseous.
Good luck with your surgery!

I got all 4 of mine taken out at the start of summer 2005. All were under the gums. I got an IV to put me out. The dentist had me countdown from 10. I made it to 7. What seemed like 2 seconds later I woke up tasting blood feeling goofy as shit. I then got my pills and sat in my pool listening to TREOS that I got that day from smartpunk... you know because I ordered it 2 months ago and it came in that day, like always. I sat in bed the next day then went out drinking that night. I had a quick quick recovery. Some of my friends took like 2 weeks. Hopefully you have a speedy recovery and nothing goes wrong dude.

As long as they're not messing up your other teeth, should be fine...then again I'm not nor ever will be a dentist. ;-)

I got told my dentist that I will never get wisdom teeth and by what I have read in here, I am glad.
I had 6 wisdom teeth, got them all removed (extra set on top of my top pair). I also had general anesthesia, but at the place I went to that was pretty much the norm -- never heard of just local, that'd be a fucking bitch.
Recovery was fine, probably like 2 weeks before I could go chowing down on pizza or anything.
You'll be alright, like 90% of the world does it just fine.

Mine is pushing the molar in front of it and causing intense pain. I took something for the pain and its a little more bareable and the swelling went down. I refuse to have any dental work done until after prom.

i had braces late in the game, sophomore-senior year of high school. so when they grew in, they just lined up with the rest of my teeth. works out for me, that's one less thing i have to worry about!

I actually had a great experience with mine, wasn't really in pain at all and no swelling. If they give you the ice pack that wraps around your face, like the thing Alfalfa wears, wear that as much as possible. Its annoying but it keeps the swelling a pain down a whole lot. Also, I don't know if its because you can't brush back there for a while or its the gums, but after a few days your breath may begin to smell like rotting flesh. Overall though the whole thing isn't that bad, the worst part is feeling the stitches and holes in the back of your mouth.

Mine weren't so bad during and immediately after. But then I got dry sockets or whatever you call them and they got infected so that sucked. But I think that's pretty rare.

Yup, unless 1. you don't have any or 2. you have enough room in your mouth so that once they come in, it doesnt affect your other teeth.

i hope i never need mine to be taken out, whenever my teeth are extracted its fuckin nightmare considering how much effort the dentists do to pull out my not humanly strong teeth 0.0
I got all 4 of them remeoved about 9 years ago.
Some of them weren't growing as they were supposed to be growing. So I chose they should take all of them before I need to undertake the same again. They had to cut open my whole jaw bone there. Of course with full anesthetic.
Recovery was quite good. Couldn't eat anything for a few days. Had to spit a bit blood of course once in a while but everything healed fine. After a week or so they removed the remaining threads from the stichtes. Felt kinda funny. :D

i was supposed to get my wisdom teeth out this summer but my mom just lost her job so my parents can't afford it. the 2 on the bottom haven't broken through my gums yet, but the 2 on the top have. i really hope they don't begin to shift my teeth because i had braces for 3 years and i would really hate to have to get them again, all because of stupid wisdom teeth.

That's absolutely disgusting.
In regard to the thread, I had mine removed when I had jaw surgery this past December. I didn't notice much in those regions of my mouth, as most of the post-surgery symptoms were located in the jaw, but it was still a practically a pain-free procedure.
So for those of you who may be nervous about getting this done, know that it's been done before, you'll most likely be knocked out (and if not, you'll definitely be having local anesthesia), and it's a valid excuse to stay home from work/school.

I got all four of mine out in 2007. I had general anesthesia, but they had to give me more than they usually would have because I wouldn't fall asleep. Something about my heart rate being too high. But because I had so much anesthesia, my mom had to literally drag me out of the car when we got home.

Well, just got back from having all 4 of them removed. I was knocked out so quick that I didn't even get a chance to start counting backwards. It probably helped that I was still extremely tired from the night before. Laying in bed right now, switching out the gauze. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, but maybe that's because the novocaine didn't wear off yet. The nurse said he used a long lasting one, so I probably will be numb for 12 hours. It's almost impossible to talk because of it, which my family is already having a great time with.
