probably sexism, though racism might be pretty close there. I certainly wouldn't say homophobia though given the size of the gay population in comparison.

Sexism or homophobia. I'm voting for the latter, however, simply for the number of times I hear "that's gay" or "you're a ***" thrown around on a daily basis.

This. You hear it all the time, where the terms "gay" and "f*****" casually thrown around to describe anything undesirable/stupid/etc. In many circles, homophobic notions and mindsets are much more acceptable than sexist/racist ones.

I went with sexism, even though I think its the most subtle, I also think its the most prevalent. All sports are male dominated, all genres of music feature a large gender bias. Miss America Pageants and the whole "if a girl gets with a lot of guys she's a whore but if a guy gets with a lot of girls he's the man" thing. Unequal pay, etc

Yeah I just learned that when I seen my quoted messages.
My votes for homophobia considering that most anti-gay groups and ideas are very public where sexism and racism are seems to be decreasing while even in California one of the most liberal places if not the most have gotten rid of gay marriage.

Racism. I have yet to spend more than 2 hours with my group of friends where they didn't make some lame black joke (i.e. "Hey [insert black friend's name here], where did you go? I can't see you, it's too dark out!") or casually toss the n-word around like it's nothing.

Your friends are idiots. And the thread pertains to the larger scheme of things, not exclusively to your group of friends. Homophobia is much more readily accepted and flaunted. The religious factor against homosexuality should be more than enough to push "homophobia" up above the others.

I was saying that the basis of your argumen revolves around a small sample size of people (your racist buddies), which isn't sufficient enough to say that racism is more rampant than the other two choices. It's like saying "all my friends are white, therefore there are more white people in the US". I then go on to support my initial statement, which determined that homophobia is far more widespread and accepted than the other two choices.

Why do you keep thinking that I said anything about racism being exclusive to your friends? Read my posts, understand them, then get back to me.
And I realized that you used your friends as an example of racism being common; it's merely a poor example to base your argument off of.

Well I live in Northeast Philadelphia, so its a pretty strong mix of all three. I can't just pick one.
I'm gonna go with the South Park defense here regarding the use of the word "gay". As dumb as it is, and don't get me wrong its still completely wrong, people don't use the word in a derogatory context regarding homosexuals. And I understand that it is still hurtful even if a person doesn't mean it that way. I wouldn't call it homophobic necessarily, just ignorant.

I say homophobia. It's what I see more of.
I see homophobia much more than the other two.
I'd say it goes racism > sexism > homophobia. There are still genocides and ethnocentric wars going on today and women are still oppressed in lots of countries, homophobia is pretty prevalent but I'd say less destructive.

This.
I've known my best friend since I was in 6th grade. His parents were going to kick him out of the house because they thought he was gay. He is. He came out to me and the rest of my group of friends in like junior year of high school. We don't care. But he's telling his parents he's straight so he can have a place to live in. I offered him my house.
Somethings upset me. Don't get me wrong, the other two are big issues too, but I just chose this one because it's hitting closer to home.

I would not even call them homophobic because they have come to mean a different thing. Granted they still are "homosexual" terms, but, like you said, they mean completely different things when used in that context. Languages are not concrete so when the population starts using a word for something other than its original meaning, it becomes the new meaning and thus there is no more connection to the homosexual community. South Park even had an episode about it.

When you use the word in a perjorative form (regardless of the context in which it's being used), you're referring to the group in which it originally applies to in a derogatory manner. I understand what you're trying to say, but keep in mind that when people use the aforementioned terms (gay, ******), the words always have a negative connotation behind it.
Even though the terms have been reconstructed to refer to things other than homosexuality (where gay and *** can now be synonyms for stupid), there's still ultimately an underlying implication that homosexuality is wrong. I've actually made the mistake of referring to something i found stupid as "gay" in front of a lesbian co-worker. She wasn't stoked.

Homophobic remarks, in my opinion, are now sort of embedded in the social concept of ''what's right,'' and even though people aren't as offended by it, it is much more prevalent.

I would think sexism would apply here more than a lot of places. Just look at gender roles within the LDS. It's not specifically about incidences of harassment against women, but rather a woman's place in society. A homosexual can still have a place in a society that is closed to her or him if she or he chooses not to disclose information about her or his sexuality. How many closeted homosexuals do you think against, not only in Idaho and Utah, but within the LDS church, or even among their leaders.
Homophobia by far.
And, can someone tell me how using the "n" word is racist? How can that word in and of itself be racist? What if used in a sentence like "That ****** made the shit out of my coffee" when used in reference to a white person? Context >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> mere usage. Nobody cares about its "history". It's just a word. Nothing more, nothing less.
Also, why is it more acceptable for a black person to use this word than any others? Does the word somehow take on a different meaning when spoken by a black person?

Alright, so, because a bunch of scummy racist assholes years and years and years ago used that word, anyone who uses that word today is automatically branded as racist and hateful regardless of the context it's used in? Its mere usage doesn't cause any actual palpable harm (pissing people off doesn't count as harm), even though the people who use it may. But doing the former doesn't make you the latter.
Because gays are still more oppressed than racial minorities. They've all made huge leaps societally since way back when, yet gay marriage is still outlawed in most of the world (as is simply being gay in some parts). Societally, being the operative word here. I'm sure on a personal level, a far smaller scale, they're probably all treated equally shitty, but societally, at least the races have got their civil rights.

Trust me, its not just scummy racist assholes years ago who use the word. There are plenty of people who still use the word in a hateful context, all throughout the world.
And for some reason today I cant seem to put together a coherent argument. Probably lack of sleep. But anyway it just seems like you're drastically downplaying the role of racism within our country to just a bunch of scummy racist assholes.

Oh I know that, but what about the folks who aren't hateful? The usage of a word is no measure of a man. Yes, obviously hateful people will use the word, but using it doesn't make or mean one is hateful. Like Louis C.K. and David Cross and George Carlin and Zach Galafianakis. Bunch of upstandin' white folks, them is, (or "was" in Carlin's case).
And I most certainly ain't.

Debut_Fin
06/05/10, 06:54 PM
I think it depends on what you mean by prevalent. All three exist, but homophobia is the only one that is still institutionalized (in America anyway). Even in progressive places like California and New York, gays still don't have equal rights. Society has gone out of their way in the past to ensure that minorities and women (who are also technically a minority) are ensured equal rights and opportunities, but nobody is really doing anything for the gay population which is unfortunate.
But at the same time, with gays only making up between 7 and 10 percent of the population, and women making up half of the population, sexism probably actually occurs the most often, even if it is just in subtle, relatively harmless ways.
What is sad to me is that people don't see the parallel between the women's rights movement, the civil rights movement, and the gay rights movement. How can we see what has happened in the past and know today that women deserve the right to vote and that segregation was wrong, but still think that it is somehow different for the gay rights movement?
I'll stop now before I start talking about the bible.

I disagree with this. I agree that homophobia is the most prevalent, but I don't think that racism or sexism are nearly gone. Just because the majority of the population agree that racism and sexism are wrong, people still do it, just in more subtle ways than in the past. I think there are plenty of people with racist tendencies and attitudes who would probably agree that racism is wrong. I also think that as a society we agree that sexism is wrong, but it exists in every aspect of life. What is different with homophobia is that there is still a large group of people who don't think it is wrong to be homophobic and for that reason I agree that it is the most prevalent. I just don't believe that the other two are nearly gone. I don't think sexism will ever go away because we have a society that is obsessed with gender, but I think in 2 or 3 generations racism will be extremely rare.
Racism/sexism isn't necessarily synonymous with hateful. Calling attention to gender roles/stereotypes is sexist/racist, though hardly hateful (depending on the stereotype, of course). Assuming a man is generally more aggressive by nature than his female friend without knowing either person is sexist, but is anyone really gonna be offended by that assumption? It might be a little ignorant, but otherwise, no harm done.
It really all depends on the stereotypes one regards as true/accurate. Most negative racial/gender-based stereotypes have been done away with, whereas not so much with homosexuality. Black men can marry white women, but black men can't marry white men. Which is totally flippin' gay.
