View Full Version : Paul (Greg Mottola, 2011)

Incredibly excited. Cast is a who's who of comedic genius in film today (Pegg/Frost, Jason Batemen, Wiig, Joe Lo Trugs, Rogen, Jeff Tambor).
Written by and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.
For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town—a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Collings (Frost).
Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

Plot sounds ridiculous, wonder how they'll make the alien work. Psyched for this.

Cannot wait for this, as Sean said I have full faith in it because of the cast. This was originally meant to be done with Edgar Wright, which of course would have made it even more awesome. Adore Pegg/Frost/(Wright) so I genuinely can't wait, especially as I've been re-watching Spaced lately.

Looks fun, but I'm not sure Seth Rogen was the best choice for the voice of Paul. Not that he is bad or anything, but he did voice the character in Monsters Vs. Aliens, as well as a few other big animated movies, and his voice never changes. I can't not see Seth Rogen when I see the Paul character.

Truth, it's an obvious thing to say but it looks too "American", and I know that's the point and with the director and cast it's going too and there's nothing wrong with that but it seems really odd seeing Pegg and Frost together in that kind of film/situation. I'm actually pretty underwhelmed, which sucks. I'll still watch it though. Reading Pegg's autobiography at the moment.

Well, I think this may open their following up a lot more in the US then. I know Shaun seems like it made a name for itself, but I see it as more of a cult following rather than a blanket acceptance like a Will Ferrell movie or something. Maybe Paul will help change that and get these guys a bit more of a regular draw here. Then release that third installment in the Blood and Icream trilogy. How is the book by the way?

Hollywood Reporter review from the London premiere last night:
LONDON -- There are so many references to science-fiction films and comic book characters in Universal’s affectionate, funny and action-packed sci-fi spoof Paul that there should be a prize for anyone who gets them all.
Simon Pegg, who teamed with Edgar Wright to write the wonderful zombie spoof Shaun of the Dead and the much admired shoot ’em up horror lark Hot Fuzz, here partners with co-star Nick Frost to script a comedy creature feature that hits home with wit, invention and flare.
With great gags, lots of clever little moments and a winning, almost-human story at the center to leaven the big action sequences, the film should please devoted fans of the genre with its savvy attention to detail. But also it should appeal to those who generally can take or the leave the genre, which it treats with cheerful disrespect. Box-office riches lie in wait, as it is exactly the kind of film that fans will want to see more than once.
The picture gets down to business briskly with Pegg as Graeme and Frost as Clive, best mates from England on a dream trip to the United States that begins at San Diego’s Comic-Con ahead of a tour of the most famous UFO sites.
Genial and naive, they eat up Comic-Con, where Jeffrey Tambor delivers a devastating portrayal of an aging comic creator, before they set off in a RV headed for the desert. Somewhere along the Extraterrestrial Highway, they run into Paul.
Seth Rogen voices the title character, a laid-back, weed-smoking E.T. on the run from a U.S. government agency that has kept him prisoner for 60 years. After some persuasion, Graeme and Clive agree to help Paul get to where he can be rescued and taken back to his home planet.
Men in black, rednecks and fundamental Christians are the main heavies that get in the way of their plans. The writers populate the lavishly photographed American West with several weird and wonderful characters. Sigourney Weaver is the mostly unseen voice of the head of the agency that wants to see what’s in Paul’s brain with Jason Bateman as her ruthless man on the case.
Kristen Wiig spouts scripture as an impressionable clerk at an RV camp who finds salvation thanks to Paul’s evolutionary wisdom and Graeme’s love, while John Carroll Lynch carries a Bible and a shotgun as her angry father. There’s a pair of dangerously ham-fisted agents and a couple of belligerent truck-driving cowboys also on their tail.
Director Gregg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) encourages Lawrence Sher’s cinematography and David Arnold’s score to be as witty and intelligent as the script with pictures and music that evoke and tease the classics of science fiction with the same invention. Meanwhile, the alien is all head, big shiny eyes and gangly limbs, a first-class CGI creation that fits seamlessly into the film.
With secure spots in the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible franchises, and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn coming up, Pegg is now an established star with a patented mix of good-guy innocence and street smarts. Frost’s slacker buddy routine can become tiresome but he shows good comic timing, and handles deftly several gags about whether Clive and Graeme are gay.
Rogen’s nonchalant smart-ass delivery is perfect for a cool outer-space dude and Wiig has the required sweetness and prettiness to deal with a young woman whose liberation leads her to become an ill-advised potty-mouth. There’s lots of bad language in the film, all of it for comic effect, but constant nonetheless. Christianity gets in the neck, which could hurt Bible-belt box office, and some of the action becomes a bit serious. It’s all in good spirit though and many of the jokes are priceless.

That write up makes me more excited than I have been recently. I got worried for a while because it looked so American and I wasn't sure how the mix of Pegg and Frost's comedic style/subtlety/parodying would work in that sort of setting (despite the cast being great on the whole anyways, silly worry I guess). The trailer makes me want to see it less and less each time I see it on TV over here though, but that write up restores faith.

Even if this does suck, it wouldn't make me "give up" on Pegg or Frost. Pegg has been in a fair bit of shit, but their previous work together has been so good, particularly when Edgar Wright is involved. I was sort of half excited for this anyway when I found out he wasn't on board. Although it will be years away, I'm looking forward to the next part to the "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy" so much, that I don't really mind if this matches my already fairly low expectations.

I loved it. I was laughing through out. Great performances, especially from Rogen.
My favorite reference- when Bateman shoots the radio and says "boring conversation anyway" hahahaha..
I was the only one in the theater who laughed at that lol. Wonderful movie

They forgot one I thought was the most obvious. Smile you son of a bitch. My sister and I were the only ones that laughed at that one. Best part of the movie though that had me in tears was in the comic book shop, when he's frozen pretending to be a mannequin, the whole thing through running into the street naked. Hilarious, but definitely an uneven movie.

Here's a review I did for the movie a few weeks back. Let me know what you think.

Just saw it and I loved it. I think it was pretty funny the whole way through with a few nice action scenes. I was thinking it's sorta a bromance with 2 guys and an alien which is pretty awesome.

It was funny, but not extremely hilarious. Worth my money!

there we're quite a few little nerd references like that. Like the band in the bar was playing the star wars cantina song.
I went and saw this last night. It wasn't non-stop laughs but it had some really funny moments. I was entertained.
I loved all the parts where Paul was trying to get drunk or smoking pot. So funny

I wanted to love this movie so much, but I was largely unimpressed. I definitely laughed, especially at the scene in the comic book store, but overall I think I set my expectations too high because I've always loved Pegg and Frost. Definitely could've done without the whole crazy Christians subplot, but it didn't ruin the movie for me, just didn't add anything.

That's the theatre I go to! Haha, that's awesome. That was actually my first job way back in 2004 when it was still Muvico.

Just got back from it and enjoyed it quite a bit. Really loved the last act. Was pretty surprised with all the anti-religious stuff. Guess I didn't expect any of that.
Can't wait to check out that link above with all the references they used in the movie. I was talking about that after it was over and there was so much I didn't catch and from the looks of it, even more stuff. Will be fun to watch it again knowing some of the references.

Didn't really care for it. Probably at the bottom of my Pegg movie list.

I get the feeling I'm going to be very disappointed by everything in this except the occasional moment from Pegg or Frost and the references.

saw it today, enjoyed the movie a lot, other than the anti-religious stuff, but whatevs. Also I was relieved that Jason Bateman was a good guy, don't want my view of him to tainted! haha

Decent movie. It'll have to hold me over until the next Edgar Wright directed Pegg/Frost movie.
