Indie is so broad. Screw it, I'll throw these out there
Modest Mouse
Interpol
Spoon
Pavement
Broken Bells
Elliott Smith
TV on the Radio
Arcade Fire
Fang Island
The Microphones
The Shins
New Pornographers
Titus Andronicus
And so on. Are all those indie? I don't fucking know! What is indie, really?

I feel as if this could encompass quite a spectrum.
My favorite at the moment, if you, the reader, consider it indie, would be Sleeping at Last.
Been spinning Storyboards the past few days. 'Nuff said.

THE STROKES!!!! The Kings of Indie music of the 2000s.
That title belongs to The National.
Anyways, I think The Dangerous Summer is probably the best indie band.

Indie is super broad, but some of my faves that I consider indie/underground/alt.:
Arctic Monkeys
Bloc Party
The Duke Spirit
Broken Bells
The Shins
Manchester Orchestra
Frightened Rabbit
The Antlers
The Strokes
The Kooks
Margot and the Nuclear So & So's
Thom Yorke
Noah and the Whale
..so many more that I love. I could list forever.
On a side note, Lollapalooza is a great festival for Indie/Folk/Underground/Alt. Music. If you like that genre you should check out the lineup, or just go. I'll be there this year :D

The Strokes/Bright Eyes/Manchester Orchestra/Some of Brand New's albums have an indie vibe.
Manchester Orchestra is the only indie I've ever really been able to get into.
I would also say Death Cab but I'm not sure if they fall under "indie" anymore.

The National is cool dude, but the Strokes were one of the main bands to transition music goers from music of the 90s to the 2000s
Dust Jacket
Sleep Well
Frightened Rabbit
Normandy
The Felix Culpa
The Republic Of Wolves
Balance And Composure
Tigers Jaw
Commerce
Definately check out Tigers That Talked, like someone else said. They're pretty mind blowing.
