I'm indifferent about Black History Month, it doesn't seem like we even do much during that month anyways. Are there months for other ethnicities? I haven't heard of a month for hispanic or asians.

In my experience, there are 2 types of people: people who tend to let the month go by un-noticed, and those that start foaming at the mouth come January 31.
Get over it, outside of high school you barley notice it.

You are correct. The fact that someone accidentally stumbled across a mass of land, then was greeted by its inhabitants, then killed off people by introducing certain disease, then pillaging the natives. But we say this dude discovered America...
Back on topic, there is no White history month, or Hispanic history month, why should there be a Black history month? Is it because the United States, as a whole, feels guilty for the things some of our ancestors have done?
I dont think what took place in the beginning of our countries history is enough to justify 1 month out of every year, to re-live and re-imagine all of the tragic events that took place.

Let's just get to the root of this... how does the existence of one month out of the year that observes the history of a group of people affect your daily life?
I'm indifferent on it. I do not see why Asians, Native Americans, or Hispanics do not have designated months. Then again, I'm not sure why schools try to focus on a single, specific month of the year to discuss the achievements of an ethnicity group as opposed to planning it throughout the entire year evenly. It makes no sense to me, but whatever.

Technically he didn't even do that. He was not the first. Anyway, back to the topic.
They should feel guilty as a whole, because it was allowed to happen. And one month is the least we can do. I personally think the idea of Black History month is a bad idea, but clearly not for the same disgustingly pathetic reasons you do. Black history should be all year. I'm not saying "Repeal Black History Month!" because I know if it was repealed, it would never be touched on. I want it to be just as relevant as white history year-round, but if it's only for that month, at least it's getting done sometimes.

The most annoying point being brought up in here is that Hispanics don't have a month when they do. So do Native Americans.

I think the point was that schools are not designating their months as a time to celebrate and teach about their history, culture, and how they have affected and shaped America as they do with Black History Month. Only Black History Month was focused on when I went to school at least.

My school focused on Hispanic Heritage Month but I see what you mean. The only issue I have with Black History Month is that that's essentially the only time schools focus on it. But I'd rather they do that then nothing at all, which I imagine is what would happen if it didn't exist at all.

You do realize that the dominant historical paradigm taught in United States history classes is White History right?
but yeah, i hate black history month. it lets us off too easily. We can just compartmentalize African American history/culture into one month and easily ignore it most of the rest of the year. plus it gives idiots like the person i quoted pseduojustifications for their racist inclinations.

When I was in school, they never actually did anything with black history month, it was just mentioned on the first day of February and then never mentioned again. Hell, we hardly mentioned slavery in school except for in 8th grade when we read a book about some slave boy who lived with quakers and who's mom ended up dying of rabies. Oh and we read Bud Not Buddy in 4th grade, that book made me cry.
If this is still the case in school (and in every school) then yeah, we should just get rid of it completely. I learned more about black history looking at my grandma's class pictures (late 1930s) and my great grandfathers discharge papers than from sitting around in less than 10 years in school.

I am all for celebrating the accomplishments of every race, so honestly, Black History Month doesn't effect me in the least. My only issue is by having that month, it instantly makes things racial. Why can't the achievements of black people just be celebrated cause they're people? It shouldn't have anything to do with their race, but create Black History Month, and it suddenly draws attention to it.
