Yeah, I would have listed PMFS but I never really know what genre they are.

Hardcore, Emo, Posthardcore, whatever...

even if it's purely because of 'Fuck with Fire', I am always going to consider them a screamo band. That record spiraled me into the genre.

for a scene which looked like it was dying (in the US at least) a year or so ago, 2006 has had some pretty decent releases.

Take the La Quiete "CD-R" part off, because that would be the 7" I was thinking of. Also, I think Planes Mistaken For Stars probably don't fit on this list, it's arguable though. Also, maybe you should arrange the splits into "VA." Here are a few more releases:

A Fine Boat, That Coffin - Second Nail LP
An Albatross - Blessphemy
Comadre - Burn Your Bones
Endzweck - The Grapes Of Wrath
Gantz - La Chambre Des Morts
Heaven In Her Arms - s/t
Funeral Diner - 3" Tour CD
Her Breath On Glass - Building Monuments For Survival
I Spoke - Autobiography
Loma Prieta - Our LP is Your EP
Jenny Piccolo - Discography CD
Kite Flying Society - Discography CD
Mesa Verde - Amor Fati
Occam's Razor - A Real Proposal For An Invisible World
VA - The Emo Apocalypse
VA - Kids Explode / Shokei split
VA - Live At Dead Air 11" (4-way split)
VA - Silbato / Cease Upon The Capitol split
Versoma - Life During Wartime
Zann - Three Years In The Desert

Try listening to their albums instead of making a decision based on a few songs from myspace. EHRL fit.

lol, frankly, a couple songs is enough for me to judge whether a band is emo or not. i'm not discrediting them as not being good, that's not the issue. if you think they're oh so rad and emo, you're entitled to that opinion. this list just became corrupt.

agreed. Someone tell me what releases are 'questionable' and link me to some stuff so we can weed them out. I want an ACTUAL list of bands that are screamo by actual sound.

Eleventh He Reaches London are admittedly questionable, like lawofaverages said, they are more "associated" with emo/screamo then actually being from said genre.

This whole discussion has become ridiculous, and it's exactly what turns people away from talking about this kind of music. EHRL are a band who, in my opinion, mix elements of emo, post-hardcore, indie, and post-rock, who take their influences from CTTS and City of Catepillar. I'm hessitant to compare them with Envy (they have a different sound), but are similar in the sense that they transcend genres. I can tell you that they are definately a part of the emo scene in this country, as are My Disco, who admittedly are a bit more post-hardcore DC-soundish these days. Yes, that was the criteria I used to determine their membership of this category, and if that offends you so terribly I apologize. But there's no need to be a duck about it and get all stroppy. It's not like I'm nominating fucking Hawthorne Heights for this list or some shit like that. I've been around this scene for fucking years and generally have some idea of what I'm talking about. If you want to be the scene police with this list then fine, but make sure you stipulate that before we get into this whole discussion, so I'll keep my "dubiously screamo" recomendations to myself next time.

I think what she's trying to say is My Disco is a lot like Christie Front Drive or SDRE. They're a part of the emo scene, but they might not necessarily count, but since they're from the scene, we can lump their releases in with the rest of her scene's.

TheBaroness

Yes, that was kinda what I was getting at, in terms of My Disco at least. They started life as an emo band in the vein of Off Minor, and have gradually become more influenced by the DC sound than an emo sound, so I'll give that perhapds they aren't appropriate.

I maintain, however, that EHRL has strong elements of the emo/screamo genre present in their music. If you can't glean that from listening to them on myspace well I'm sorry, but it's definately there. If they happen to mix other genres into their sound (indie/post-rock) does that make them less emo? Does that makes bands like Envy less emo because they try to expand upon that sound? If anyone is asserting that they do not belong in this category simply because they opened for Coheed or FFAF at a couple of shows, that's just fucking ridiculous.

deekismusic
09/21/06, 01:16 PM
Just because a band draws some influence from an emo band does not make them emo. If the two bands in questioned counted, then I sure as hell could think up 50 other releases that have some kind of influence on the musical elements of other bands. To say that one of those bands draws strong influence from ctts or city of caterpillar is totally laughable. Emo is a very influential genre, so that should be obvious, and SDRE and bands like that would equally not fit into this list, as they were indie bands. It's really not that hard to distinguish bands, I don't see the problem. This is an emo/screamo list, not an offshoot list for any band who's listened to an emo record before.

x togepi x
09/21/06, 01:31 PM
I know what emo is. I know that CFD and SDRE don't count. I've been saying this for longer than you've been here. But, we have an Emo/Screamo Record thread where people talked about buying indie stuff that comes from the emo scene and nobody criticized them. I consider this thread to be the same type of thing, something encouraging people to get into stuff that came out this year. It's not really important that it stays pure. We don't need like 3or 4 threads listing what real emo is, that's horribly redundant.

hell, i even used to talk about my post-rock band in this forum and nobody cared.

I'm just saying, you, me, her and basically everyone else in this thread knows their shit. We're not doing any good by telling each other that we're wrong, since we already believe the same thing is emo.

I'm not trying to destroy the forum or anything. Most of the time, keeping things pure is what we should be doing. This time, I don't think it's all that important because it's not like people are coming in here and posting OMG 2006 MCR's RELEASE. it's about getting other people into new music.

deekismusic
09/21/06, 01:58 PM
Oh, I'm all down for recommending good music. Hell, I don't even care what bands get mentioned in the forum, even if they're hardly related. If it's good then I'm happy to hear it. I just think it's misleading to call a thread Emo/Screamo releases and then list stuff that's only semi-related. You could create a Favorite Albums of 2006 thread for that, do you know what I mean. I know that the regulars here all know their shit, I just think it might make things confusing for some people by seemingly throwing anything with a couple elements of the genre in here. It's all good though, just speaking my mind and you should do what you please. :)

well, I am of the opinion that EHRL have enough elements of emo in their sound to be classified in this genre. I agree with you about My Disco, they shouldn't be here now that we have properly defined what this list is, and I have stated that above. I don't know, maybe I'm biased because EHRL is one of the cornerstones of our emo scene down here that I've been brainwashed. But certainly, the dynamics of sound which are in part used to classify emo are present in their music. Anyway, I'm tired of arguing about this so I'll try and stop now, and go back to gushing about how good Cease Upon the Capital are.

I have a site where I'm gonna start uploading some albums. Don't have all of those but I've got quite a few. Also, it prevents you from having to download one song at a time. Shite.

Ampere/Das Oath Tour Split
(though I guess only half of it is screamo)

and if you count them on the tour split, why not the new Das Oath 11" that came out yesterday.

for a scene which looked like it was dying (in the US at least) a year or so ago, 2006 has had some pretty decent releases.

I wouldnt say last year the scene was dying much at all...

Welcome the Plague Year- S/T
Gospel- The Moon is the Dead World
Wow, Owls- Pick Your Patterns
Funeral Diner- The Underdark
Transistor Transistor- Erase all Name and Likeness

...to name a few

maybe not last year, but there was a period of time where it seemed pretty much every emo band of note was breaking up, with members going on to decidedly non-emo side projects
