Why did it seem like musicians in the 90's had so much more substance and dignity than the shit that's being pumped out these days by talentless hacks?!
Pearl Jam
Blink 182
Nirvana
Stone Temple Pilots
Smashing Pumpkins
Green Day (90's more so)
Metallica (Early 90's)
Powderfinger
Faith No More
Bush
Korn
Pantera
System Of A Down
There's so many more I could add but will just leave it at that for the moment...

the internet has definitely allowed for the flooding of music, be it good or bad. i agree with you that it does seem like the 90's had some good stuff going on. now it's like anyone with an computer and and audio interface can be a star...talent optional.

I really think that the majority of 90's lead singers were just leaps and bounds better than the ones around today.

I went to a 90's party last nite. Best time of my life.
There was a band playing the greatest music- Pearl Jam, blink, Blur, Green Day, AC/DC, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Live. Sooo good.

early 90's alternative was the best thing to ever happen to music
But what it spawned years later is one of the worst things to happen to music

The problem is that the blatant commercialism of the 80s music scene, things like synth pop and hair metal, were inevitable to reappear as long as we live in a profit driven world. Sad reality, the minute alternative exploded, it was doomed to become commercialized beyond recognition. Pearl Jam gave way to Nickelback...and now with the internet, half the work a band usually has to go through has been removed. Why tour or learn to have a unique stage presence when we can put it all on Myspace?

I miss the 90's so fucking bad. It literally makes me sick to my stomach to think of what these kids are listening to these days. I feel like music has just lost that "edge". I used to try so hard to find like Limp Bizkit, Eminem, Green Day, Rage, Blink, Korn, etc CD's back in 1999 when I was 7! I mean you can have whatever opinion you want about those bands but you can't dispute the fact that people were extremely passionate and devoted during that time and the bands were the same way in return. I even used to buy records off a 5th grader on the bus just to listen to that shit. I even remember talking about Bizkit with a bunch of kids back in sunday school! Haha!
Kids just don't have that drive anymore but at the same time I don't blame them. Who in their right mind would go that far to get a Nicklefuck CD or the new Justin Bieber CD. Who gives a shit!?! There's nothing mainstream right now that every person in the room can agree on and say "Wow, this band is doing something different and they kick ass". The industry is wide open and its time for another change, just like we had in the 90's.
I saw a show the other day where they interviewed some 6 year old kid and asked him what his favorite band was and he said Nicklefuck. I really wish I could have jumped through the TV and thrown the In Utero record at him.
I don't know about you guys but I was raised on the alternative/pop punk scene and I'm still heavily into it. I see bands like Four Year Strong, Fireworks, The Wonder Years, A Loss For Words, Therefore I Am, etc really breaking through in the next couple of years. There is nothing out in the industry right now that can compare to one of those smaller, intense shows. Sure, it's gonna suck when they get bigger but music in general needs it.
This industry is stale as shit. We NEED real music again. Theres a whole generation of kids waiting for something that they can sink their teeth into and in my opinion no one is taking advantage of that. Sorry I ranted, hahaha.

There's some kids in a garage right now somewhere, with a new sound, waiting for the right time to strike. Just be ready to support them when they do.

Even Hanson is good now in retrospect. It's amazing that so many of those bands can stay relevant.
Sugar Ray was always my guilty pleasure, too.

The rise of alternative and grunge music through the likes of Nirvana, Alice in chains, Radiohead, Jane's Addiction, R.E.M. Industrial bands like Nine inch Nails, White Zombie and Ministry. Rap Metal groups that were actually talented like Faith No more and Rage Against the Machine. AND OMG rap music was actaully good and wasnt all about getting crunk and having a stupid dance to go along with it. Its hard to beleive that at one point all this great music was played on the radio and MTV unlike now when it consists of Justin Biebers and Auto tune rappers.

90's music, hands down, was the best decade of music ever.

I agree that music in the 90's was better. But that's because we're in our twenties. That was our generation's music.
Remember how irritated we get with older people claiming their generation's music was better when you knew that was only because it's what they listened to when they were most impressionable?

i am obsessed with 90s music
the 90's fucking ruled, let me tell you
i remember listening to alanis morrisette's jagged little pill & the original now! on cassette when i was like 4
i think i knew all the words to "sex & candy" before i knew what sex was..
regardless, there aren't any particular 90's bands i like over any others, more or less the songs themselves.
unless you count NMH, who are a 90's band, just not the stereotypical ones.
eh.
