The bands new album, Suck Out The Poison, is out on October 3rd. What can you tell us about it?

Steve: Oh man, our new record has tons of songs. Like 14 songs of music. Drum parts

Schuyler: It has vocals.

Steve: Singing and guitars and stuff. Most of them are done pretty well. It's um uhh, you probably want to know what it's like in comparison to the last record.

Me: Haha sure.

Steve: I think it's louder. It's a little more aggressive I would say.

Schuyler: It's umm, I think it's a little bit more smarter.

Steve: It's a lot better.

Scuyler I think now that we're figuring out that kids don't like it, it's kind of proving that it's smarter (laughs).

Steve: My dad likes it. He only likes good music.

Schuyler: So does my dad.

What was it like working with Steve?

Schuyler: Steve's been my friend for like...oh Steve Evetts, sorry. Steve's cool man. He's a very strange guy.

Steve: He's just a crazy dude.

Schuyler: He likes Ben Folds and we like Ben Folds.

Steve: He likes name dropping every record he's done. That's not really true (laughs).

I was reading an interview from a ways back and in the interview you guys had said that your label wasn't to stoked on the band after a certain festival.

Steve: Oh, you're probably talking about Cornerstone. Well they acted like they were into us, but we knew they weren't because we were so horrible.

Has their opinion changed after hearing this record and do you think that they're impressed?

Steve: Solid State seems to really enjoy our new record. But take that for what it's worth. They are a record label and we are a band on that label. Soo...they seem to enjoy it alot.

Alright, I also read that you wanted this record to come out and be nothing like what's out there. Do you think you accomplished that?

Schuyler: That's one of those things that you kind of have to wait and see. I think we did and are doing a different kind of record than most bands. We're slowly doing it the way we want to and it took alot of changes and changes are still happening. I think we're happy with the way things are going.

Steve: That's one of those things that every band says. Every band says their record is different than what is in the scene, but I truly believe ours is. The songs we put online so far, kids are calling each other stupid and saying they hate eachother over our new songs. Our loyal fans are saying "No matter what, He Is Legend's new shit is awesome." There's also people out there saying our new shit sounds like Korn, which we think is awesome, but saying your new album sounds like Korn in the scene is faux pas, you can't do that. Korn does in fact rule.

Why did the band decide on Suck Out The Poison as the title. Is there any story or meaning behind it?

Schuyler: Not exactly.

Steve: We probably decided on it before I Am Hollywood came out.

Schuyler: (laughs) We did actually. We had like three names we were throwing around and I Am Hollywood just worked because of the song. Suck Out The Poison just sounds dirty.

Steve: It just sounds good.

Schuyler: It sounds sexy, good and well all of the things we are in one way or another.

Steve: We didn't even know it was some kind of sexual thing until someone pointed it out (laughs).

What can you tell us about the lyrics? Is there a concept or a theme throughout the record?

Scuyler: Not really a theme. I kind of just threw stuff out there. I think with this record I was more focused with writing short stories rather than just having songs be songs. I want someone to accidently just find the CD booklet in someones car and be like "I really wanna listen to that record." I think i accomplished that.

Steve: I think they're awesome. How many times do you say "blood" on the record?

Schuyler: I think 14 times.

Steve: That's cool.

Schuyler: There's only a few bands with the word "blood" in their name.

Steve: Bleeding is such a natural occuring thing, I'm surprised that more bands don't use the words "blood" or "bleeding" in their lyrics.

Schuyer: I have heard alot about fire, but not enough. Fire and blood...what are the other ones?

Steve: Like black. You see alot of black but you don't hear enough about it.

Schuyler: Nobody ever sings about the color black.

Steve: Wish people would sing about what they see.

(everyone's laughing)

Schuyler: I wish somebody would write a song about it actually raining blood.

Steve: Yeah! Ah! wait...

Schuyler: They could actually call it "Reign In Blood."

Steve: Don't record that (laughs).

Are you guys at all araid that some fans might dismiss the band because of the change in sound on this record (musically and vocally)?

Schuyler: I don't think we're afraid at all. Nothing against the fans but the people who just like He Is Legend for just the one or two songs are the people who we're trying to weed out with this record.

Steve: Those are the people who really don't like He Is Legend. They like that band on Solid State who toured with so and so.

Schuyler: I think that with this record we're going to gain the fans we want and always wanted to have and lose the people who never really got us in the first place.

Steve: I think for every fan that doesn't listen to the record because it doesn't have one breakdown in it, I hope we gain 5 fans who like actual music.

So you basically answered my next question which was "what do you want the fans to get out of the record?"

Schuyler: Exactly that. I mean you gotta look at it from a stand point. Alot of people were talking about how our music has changed or how our mindset has changed musically but like...we've been on the road for almost two years now. Of course everything about you is going to change. I think musically we went back to what inspires us to play music in the first place. When we wrote I Am Hollywood, we were just stoked to be making a record for a label.

Steve: It was that weird "this is our debut, what should we do" thing.

Schuyler: Yeah, exactly. We had to show people what we could do and we did that, but around 6 months later our mindset had changed because we saw what the industry was about and what touring was about. Not that we've become jaded about it, but we just know the truth about the music scene and what goes along with it. We're not trying to change anything. We just want to do what we want.

Will "Mushroom River" serve as the first video single?

Schuyler: I think that the single is going to drop on Myspace tomorrow (September 18th). That first joint is gonna drop tomorrow.

(everyone laughs)

Steve: Is it Sunday right now?

Schuyler: Yeah. It's called "Attack of The Dungeon Witch"

Steve: Honestly, "Mushroom River" is just the song that sounds most unlike our last record. It was to get people fighting and yelling.

Schuyler: We're always about throwing curve balls at the kids. We're just trying to do things different.

Steve: I think Chris (keyboardist for Underoath) pretty much summed up our record. What was that thing you said?

Schuyler: You said it perfectly.

Chris of Underoath: It's like piranhas eating you and you can't get away (laughs).

Schuyler: But the piranhas have very soft clean teeth.

Steve: So you don't die.

Chris: It has a love tickle to it.

Steve: The CD is annoying like a love tickle.

(everyone laughs for a good minute)

Schuyler: The love tickle will be our next album. He Is Legend-The Love Tickle

Although this has been asked many times...are you guys a christian band?

Schuyler: This has been asked every interview. It's alright though. We are not a christian band.

Steve: I would say that about a third of my drum beats are christian drum beats.

Schuyler: I think most of the riffs on the record are christian riffs.

Steve: I have that one jewish fill that I'm pretty proud of.

I know nothing about this, but a reader asked what happened with Warped Tour?

Steve: Oh yeah, I saw that. I read Absolutepunk (laughs)

Schuyler: Like...

Steve: I think he means why didn't we do Warped Tour.

Schuyler: Ohhh...I went and saw Tom Waits and we had to cancel.

Steve: I had just went grocery shopping and I didn't want to waste all that bread and mustard and stuff.

Schuyler: I filled my car up with gas and it was like "should I just drive it to warped tour?" Because that gas is just going to sit there.

Steve: Cause you don't want it to evaporate. I think gas evaporates.

Schuyler: God knows I wouldn't let my girlfriend drive my car.

Steve: Doritos are expensive. I wouldn't want my roommate eating doritos while I'm gone.

Schuyler: Forsure...forsure.

Alright well that's about all I have for you guys. Any closing comments?

Schuyler: Buy our record on October 3rd within the first week.

Steve: If a certain number of people buy it during the first week, I can't say what number that is, but our A & R dude said that he would give us anything we wanted.

Schuyler: Seriously, everything we want. We can assure you that if everyone goes out and picks up the record in the first week, what we get will be incredibly awesome.

Steve: For everyone. It'll be good for everyone.

Schuyler: The whole world will benefit from what we get. It's reasonable.

Steve: The number is not too large.

Schuyler: So let's do that America.

Haha awesome interview. Haven't been able to get into the song Mushroom River (comes off like Godsmack to me :\ ) but i'll definately give this record a chance when it comes out.

"Steve: I have that one jewish fill that I'm pretty proud of. "

Highlight of the interview.

ehh, cheers to jon for putting up with that.

maybe you guys got more out of that interview than i did.. it seemed like i was reading a conversation between someone being pretty serious and two guys that just drunk-dialed him from a waning party. they didn't even give a straight answer to a few questions.

also, they seemed resentful of anyone who liked 'i am hollywood' but didn't check out their other stuff.. as if this record is purposefully made to piss them off. i mean if they made the record they want that is cool, but it almost sounds like they wrote it as an act of revenge or something

nah, it wasn't a bad time. I had a great time conducting it with the two. they're just funny guys. The reason i'm not in there a lot is because i spent the whole time laughing inside and out haha.
I think they're just sticking it to the people who only show up to their shows to hear "I Am Hollywood" which is fine by me. There was way more to that record than just the one track. A lot of people didn't give the rest a chance. The new stuff is amazing to watch live and much more enjoyable.

i think their new songs aren`t too bad (never listened to "i am hollywood"), but i don`t get the whole "we are doing something no other band is doing" deal... it really doesn`t sound that special to me...

anyway, that was a quite crazy interview... the craziest part being them saying that they like korn... -10 million sympathy points... or was it a joke?

well i'll take it from you then.. these things don't always transfer into text the same for everybody so i'm sure it was better than i thought.

yeah, agree that i am hollywood is a really great album, probably one of the more diverse albums across the track list that tooth and nail put out in a while. basically every other song switches it up a good deal, and they are all good.

No they really like Korn. Korn's first album was actually influential in hardcore. Hell, they even toured with Sick Of It All.

so what if they like korn...i admit i really liked their first album.

i see where they're coming from about "the wweding out" of their fans....they're just doing what they want to do and if you don't like it then oh well.

personally...i like their new stuff.....not too exited about the downtuned guitar sound but i could easilly get over it....schyulers voice i think still sounds good....as well as the scream.

Solid State isn't a Christian label, neither is Tooth & Nail. Both have many bands that aren't Christian bands.

I definitely like "I Am Hollywood" for more than just the tile track, or for "The Seduction". Sadly, they're the only ones I can ever remember by name, but the cd was blazing. "Dinner With a Gypsy" even seemed to have an Eagles flair in the bridge. I've barely listened to the new material, so I can't say anything.

i have got to say, this interview really made me mad.
these guys sound like real jerks. so because i only like I Am Hollywood, im not a "loyal fan"? that smells like bull crap to me.
so just because im not a "rabid fan" who thinks every release a band makes is perfect, im hated by the band? at least im not a fan who likes the lead singer (or any other member of the band) just because "hes hot".
the new stuff sounds nothing like korn, but then again, im a person who listens to music for a certain "style" they made.
so because of this, when a band changes their sound, i dont like it, because i liked what i heard.
i dont like "just one song" i like every song on the I Am Hollywood album, and i didnt like the EP they made that much.

so they are making this album to weed out people like me? what else do they want? their fans to be Ayran?

ive gotta say again, this kind of attitude is retarded and immature, and their personality has really hindered my love of this band. and thats saying something when i was pretty much convinced that the I Am Hollywood album was the very best album ive ever heard, out of all of my 90gb of MP3s.

i mean korn influencing hardcore? not likely. especially since korn was around since 1994 or so and hardcore/punk has been around since 1977 or so.

i think the point they were trying to make is that they don't want the dumb kids who only like their breakdowns, or only like the song I Am Hollywood, or the kids that just like them because they are on Solid State Records. they probably also think its stupid to have kids keep arguing the fact that "he is legend could put out crap and i'd still buy it, cause they're he is legend." my assumption is they just want kids who actually enjoy the songs and the music, not because schuyler has a beard or because of the label they are on. so if you fall into that category then you should get what they were trying to say and you're not one of the kids they are trying to "weed out." but you got offended, so truth is you probably don't get it. and for that, you're dumb.

if you read the whole interview unbiased then i think it comes off as very funny and tongue in cheek. you can't honestly take anything these guys say too seriously. they said what they want and they weren't mean or rude in any way. i think they rule and i love the new songs. so anyone that doesn't like it is going to have to do a lot of debating with me to convince me not to buy it. lick it.

09/22/06, 06:49 PM
well i wasnt saying "you shouldnt listen to the new stuff"
thats up to YOU.
im just saying his voice sounds like he injured it, which is odd since he didnt do that much i think. touring hurt it maybe? or maybe thats the way he wants to sing for this new one.

i was also riled up because i take things seriously. so i believed what was said.

i DO like i am hollywood (the song) but its not my favorite song off the album. ive listened to the hollywood cd about 30+ times and i STILL cant choose a favorite song. the "breakdowns" are rare but the low "hardcoreish" voice he did on that record made my skin crawl.
so far it seems to sound like other songs by other bands on the solid state label. as much as i love underoath as an example, the songs have a comparable "style" in terms of the sound and vocals. listen to redeemer, define the great line, and some songs by he is legend and (to me) it sounds all too similar. only mewithoutyou's new album sounds different, but its in a completely different genre.

im not placing blame, but im lost on how they say its "something new" or whatever, when it sounds the way it does. im still going to get the album, since i have only heard a few songs, as like everyone else

ithurtsitkills
09/22/06, 07:15 PM
every song they have released on their myspace has been completely different from each other. so i don't see how its possible to judge the record based on three songs, especially when those three songs are nothing alike. it sounds like to me He Is Legend is going to be putting out an even more diverse record than they did with 91025 and with IAH.

and seriously the new underoath does in fact sound like normajean and a little mix of every time i die.

but you should be taken out to the street and beaten for saying that he is legend sounds remotely like either of those bands. thats ridiculous.

if if you think the new he is legend tracks sound like norma jean and underoath then i need to actually go buy those bands cds. if they sound anything close to HIL then norma jean and underoath aren't half as bad as i had first thought. that was sarcasm.

and maybe when they say its something new they mean a broader spectrum than just a couple song, maybe they're talking about the whole album being "something new" that no one has done yet. as these freaking bands that everyone likes, all the norma jeans and unearth and underoaths and halifaxs, etc etc put out records with every song sounding the same and it gets so freakin boring to listen to. my mind just shuts off completely and i feel like i'm brain dead listening to the same song over and over and over and over.

i always have and always will pat HIL on the back. they aren't lame.

PS HIL doesn't sound like a Solid State band. Solid State bands suck. HIL shouldn't even be on that label.

Gvaz
09/23/06, 08:18 AM
never said that HIL is lame, nor did i say the new album sucks. i DID say id have to listen to the album to get a better idea, BUT based on the songs shown from the new cd, im a bit disapointed.

personally i agree with you with the similaries and listening to "the same song over and over" thats why im moving more to the drone/doom metal/ambient/post-rock genres lately, but im comparing the IAH album to the songs on the myspace. they are different from the sort of "style" i have come to love on the i am hollywood cd. HOWEVER, i still have to listen to the new cd, and thats where my arguement fails to hold proper ground.

also its only the first part of the first song that sounds like ETID on the new underoath album.
and i mean HIL doesnt sound like the other solid state bands. im saying the NEWEST cds (as in the ones that came out this year, such as underoath, norma jean, he is legend) that are of the "vocally -core whatever you wanna call it" genre all have the same...style. the music sounds the same. its like you could switch the singers around in those three bands, and they would be making the same sound.

given yes, the new songs by HIL still have the sort of musical "flair" that reminds me of IAH, but its like they took that, mixed it with their EP, and left it so that "most of IAH was lost in the washing machine".

im not saying i hate the band, im just frustrated that they didnt make a IAH 2 cd. thats one of the few bands i wouldnt mind repitition from.

Huge I AM HOLLYWOOD fan, and not just the song the entire album. the new stuff is growing on me, and i'm def. gonna give it a chance because i remember not being stoked on IAM at first and then i fell in love.

i do have to say his voice sounds weaker on the new shit tho, maybe thats just cuz the production on that last album was fucking unbelievable and it made his voice sound awesome.

I am surprised so many people got mad over what these guys said. I understand what HIL meant when they said weeding out the fans. I have gone to some of their shows, and have seen the kids that just sit there until they play IAM and then act like they are hardcore fans. That is such a horrible thing to see, that kids only like one of your songs. They just want to get rid of all the posers, which is what a lot of bands try to do. and I am surprised you guys just act like SOTP and IAM are the only two he is legend cd's, did no one ever listen to 91025?
