I'm to lazy to post any links but everyone knows that chinas gdp is growing at 10% a year while the US is at 4% (around there anyway). Their military is also growing quite rapidly along with technology they are apparently stealing from the US (recent news blah blah). Economists say that within 15-20 years the Chinese will surpass the US as the world super power. The unbalanced trade with China does not help the situation i suppose either.

What I want to know is this: What kind of economy are the Chinese running, apparently it is not communism although it is ruled by a communist regime, perhaps market socialism?

Could we perhaps see another cold war although The Chinese and US markets depend upon each other?

I didn't spend anytime on this post so if you have anything to add then please do

Yeah...China is currently running what the USSR failed miserably with, which is a market economy with communist political institutions.

It's funny, because we always have assumed capitalism went hand in hand with democracy. but as it turns out, not really the case.

Though, if I remember from my stuff last semester, the amount of protest within China is starting to rise, slowly.

Look how ridiculous the elections are in our country, as well as the democratic institutions as well, and then multiplt taht by about 4, assuming that population is a direct correlation to governmental struggle. I can only imagine how ridiculous it would be if it's not a direct effect...

Add in the fact that China's culture is drastically different, and their history of single leader military control, and that communism is working so well for them is not suprise.

I'm not sure democracy, at least in it's current form, can adequately function in a country of 1.2ish billion people. Sure, it's working in India for the most part, but their is still a great deal of unrest, and the actual benefit it has given in terms of socio-economic benefit to the poor in India (which is a lot of people, like 1/3 of the population) is minimal really.

And, to add to that, the reason why China's GDP is growing so much is two-fold. First, there is no private competition within their industry, so as soon as they found an effective way to operate, their is no reason to change it until it stops working. Secondly, they are quickly becoming the new source of commerce in Asia, overtaking the US's past influence in the market, and thus why their GDP can grow.

As for a "cold war" of sorts...China militarily and technologically is still way behind us (remember when they launched their space shuttle a few years back...finally). Their main reason for nuclear anything is power...since they need so much of it.

Thank you Comparative Politics for teaching me what I know about China...

So basically the means of production are owned by the state or by the workers of a company (like socialism) but things like supply are mediated on the market (like capitalism). Does that sound right?

I kind of see it as the opposite of social democracy where as there is a capitalist base with certain principles of socialism to clean up the ills of capitalism but in market socialism, socialism is the base but certain aspects of capitalism are used to clean up the ills of socialism (like shortage).

Sound right at all?

china will be slowing down soon.

their population is really old. pretty soon their savings will be depleted paying for retirement and there will be a mass surplus on jobs.

The problem China has though is that their dollar is no longer being pegged to ours. Also, only 30% of their country is industralized. They don't give a shit about the rural areas, so they do have to watch out for a revolution. I guess we'll see what happens, but more competition on the world scale is not ultimately a bad thing. Most of the stuff China produces, USA stopped making years ago. They also have high tariffs on certain industries and you have to expect them to be lowered soon or people won't buy their good in return.
