For real this time. Which country will win the Fifa world cup football 2010. I only included real potential winners (sorry USA).

Off course my vote will go to my homecountry Holland (The Netherlands). Van Persie, Sneijder, Robben, need I say more?

Discuss!

Honestly, I think they are most talented team in the World Cup. But beware el grupo de la muerte. They have some tough matches against Portugal and Cote d'Ivoire. Cote d'Ivoire might not be Africa's best team but they are are going to be relentless. Who knows how the DPRK will fair up, but supposedly they have a decent enough team this year. Probably genetically engineered by the Dear Leader.

Italy has too many votes, overrated this year by far. Spain would be a fairly strong choice to go with. Maybe England or France.

Of course I'm supporting England, but losing Rio was pretty bad and I'm not convinced Gerrard was the right replacement choice for captain.

I don't think England is going to walk all over the US though. It's going to be a great game, I honestly see a draw.

Picked Argentina in the poll. South American team will win this one, European teams can't win the cup outside of Europe

I did earlier. But let's be honest, USA won't win it, and a lot of people voted for them on this site before, so that didn't make it a realistic poll. And I don't agree anyone besides these teams can win it. It's always one of the usual suspects who wins. Sometimes an outsider can surprise by coming far, but they never win it...

My vote isn't based purely on fanboyism, I agree that I'm biased (but who isn't), but I think we make a very good chance of winning it, we have got the best attacking players in the world. I only included the top countries in line with the bookmakers, and as you see Holland is 5th placed favorite:

Spain
5,25
Brazil
5,75
England
7,00
Argentina
8,00
The Netherlands
10,00
Germany

I never understood the "ancestry" reasoning. So, you're a proud Italian. That means you have more of a loyalty to that country than the one you're born in, presents opportunities to you, employment, and so forth? People are quick to seize the benefits of the "land of the free," but when it comes to national pride in sports, many shy away. How sad.

I'm all for supporting teams based on heritage, but I'd hope one would support their birth nation first. If they've lived elsewhere for a significant amount of time, it makes more sense.

I support teams other than my own birth, but only because I like the players that play for them (i.e. Spain, because I love Fabregas, and Portugal, because I love Ronaldo, and England because I love Rooney and Ferdinand.) But, I would never choose to follow a team on my heritage unless they happened to have players that I liked, which in that case, it'd be coincidental.

Point being, though, is that you and I (and obviously others, Paulie, this is for you, haha) find it ridiculous that people write off America from the get, and not only write them off, but won't even "waste their time" to follow them. Ridiculous.

Winner is hard to pick this time around. Problem being, it's not like a normal World Cup. It'll be played in the winter (South Africa is in the southern hemisphere), so its hard to say which teams that'll affect more.

I think Spain, England, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany will win.

introduction

I'd love to see Spain win this year, they may have the strongest team going into the cup, besides the fact that they also play good football.

I think Terry would have been a better captain than Gerrard, regardless of whatever happened off the field, and that having a 3rd captain in the space of one year really ruins the team stability.

Argentina have possibly the most raw talent in their team, but at the same time, Maradona has made some awful choices in the team - no Cambiasso or Zanetti? What the hell was he thinking?!?!

Brazil are very strong of course, playing a straighter, more sensible style than usual, with a team that really reflects this. Building a team around Kaka will probably yield results. I still think it was a mistake to leave Ronaldinho at home though, the team could use a little more creativity and flair in attack.

Portugal have Ronaldo, and for all we know, that might be enough. I could see him doing what he did for Real Madrid, and drag them singlehandedly to the finals, regardless of what the rest of the team does.

Netherlands have a strong team as usual, Sneijder and Robben in midfield and Van Persie as a striker should scare the pants off most teams. Unfortunately, this is discounted by the fact that Robben may not even make it to the world cup.

France and Italy shouldn't even be considered potential winners, and shouldn't be on this poll. I would replace them with the Ivory Coast, who I would say are the African team with the best chance of making it far.

I would normally say the same for Germany, but you never discount the Germans.

Enjoy my essay.

I agree with almost everything. I don't think Ivory coast has any chance of winning it though, don't forget they have to survive a group with Brazil and Portugal included. Besides that, Drogba won't be playing (and when if he does, he won't be on top of his game), plus African teams aren't balanced enough. Bad goalkeepers to start with, much filler and tactically very poor. If they are lucky we might see only one African team survive the group stage imo.

That's my point. Don't go by rankings and odds. Anything is possible, that's why the tournament is played. Otherwise, there would only be 12 teams in the Cup, not 32, if every team didn't have a chance. What's so unrealistic about a team that pulled off 2 upsets in the Euro Cup, beating Spain and at one point leading Brazil, making a run for the Cup? Nothing. Other teams have a better shot, but that doesn't mean we have no shot. The EC finals in hockey this year were the 7th and 8th seed teams..anything is possible. Again, its why the games are played.

I'm a Brit and I don't fancy our chances even half as much. Having said that, we're a nation of pessimists. For real this time. Which country will win the Fifa world cup football 2010. I only included real potential winners (sorry USA).

Off course my vote will go to my homecountry Holland (The Netherlands). Van Persie, Sneijder, Robben, need I say more?

Discuss!

It's a crime that Holland have never won the world cup considering the greats they've had in the past. I think Spain are expected to win it, but Brazil will probably be the team to pull it off.

Also, to anyone saying your country has "no shot," reconsider your stance. Just because you don't like something, or it may not be the most popular thing in your hometown/country whatever, does not discredit the work of the 23 men to represent your country who will fight to give you international glory whether you want it or not. I'm so sick of reading "The U.S. has no chance," and "Why do we even have a soccer team?" and Jim Rome's ignorant rants comparing soccer to poker. Soccer may not be as huge in your respective countries as it is in England, Brazil, and so forth, but that does not mean you have "no chance." Your country is, essentially, one of the 32 best teams in the world. And if you had "no chance," why would they even bother playing the games? I could see not caring about winning, but to say it's impossible is ridiculous.

Sorry for the rant, but go on.

Australia were at the last World Cup. Made it to the "Round of 16" before Grosso dived in the box to take Italy through.

They aren't forced to qualify through Asia, they asked to move there, and that was only since 2006. Before they just destroyed amateur Pacific Island teams (31-0 against American Samoa), then had to play against the South American 5th placed qualify in a playoff. The way they have it now is much better.

I agree with the AFC/OFC combination. New Zealand are going to be left doing nothing, similar to the way Australia were. They can have a pre-qualifying round where the lesser nations (American Samoa, Afghanistan, etc) all playoff to reach the main round. It'll be much better for competition.

I'm not sure on the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL though. It could work, but there's a lot of teams in North America which aren't very good. But then again, it could end up like the UEFA qualifying system. Brazil v Barbados though? Maybe they'll have to have another pre-qualifying round for that. Something I think they should introduce to UEFA.

The CONCACAF/CONMEBOL federation would have 50 members. I think the easiest thing to do would be to seed/advance the top 30 teams, have the other 20 play in a play-in round. The 10 that advance join the top 30 in a group stage. 8 groups of 5 teams. Group winners go to the World Cup. That's just what I would want, it would never happen. USA, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina aren't going to go for only playing 4 home games. When they're playing 9 now. All about the $$$.

It's not about that. I get annoyed with people that feel as though a high ranking and a "good team to bet on" gives a team some sort of invincibility. It's not about USA winning, or New Zealand going all the way, that's not my argument. My argument is to give credit where it's due, and if a team makes the WC, they're worth your consideration.

I actually agree with the OP. Get off you high horses guys, its only a fucking forum. USA won't win it. Not this year anyway. Be ridiculous to have a 32 team poll anyway.

Easy to say when your team was included! :-P

Haha i'm not "butthurt" about USA and others being left off, I've said time and time again I feel Spain will win it (and I voted for them), but I guess i'm just having a rough time with people giving me the "odds" and "rankings" argument, as i'm sure you saw in the other thread. It's an uphill battle I struggle with supporting the US, and people/friends who don't throwing stats and odds at my face. It's not impossible, is all I'm saying.

Like I said, USA might have the potential to surprise some people, like reaching the quarter finals. Buit the poll is about who wins it. And winning it doesn't take one or two good matches, but a strong team all the way and no-one besides these 9 teams have that potential.

Haha, I tried. Glad someone agrees with me, and more appropriately a US fan. I'm more or less taking my rage out on this OP from that friend of mine that always uses rankings as grounds for his argument. As a US fan, rankings/stats/bookie ratings are never in our favor, so therefore we have no shot? 50/1 or 90/1 odds to win it all, it could still happen. This isn't some delusional rant, I don't "truly" feel the US will win the Cup, but a few upsets their way could give some confidence and make a decent run possible.

Actually I'm happy we didn't play super. Normally Holland always starts furious and then lose momentum, like in 2008 when we defeated italy with 3-0 and france with 4-1 and were defeated by russia... So no worries, slowly growing into a tournament is the best way to do it.

Well, if this poll is about who has a realistic chance, Portugal and France shouldn't be there :-p I'd say the same about Italy, though I know people would disagree since they won last year.

Again, by yours and bookies standards. And, it's your thread, so I guess I have to respect and understand that. But, teams can "get hot" and make an unexpected run. Look at Ivory Coast, ranked 27(?)th, but currently drawing a 3 team. If Ivory Coast wins this, they could eliminate one of these "9 and only 9 clubs" you've drawn up. I guess I pick issue with just that. You've selected 9 teams that may not even advance past their group stage. It's just a bit early to pick 9 teams IMO.

I already want to punch Lalas. He actually tried to argue that around the 20 minute mark, Ronaldo dove on the Demel tackle, when there was clearly leg on leg.

One was definitely leg on leg, but another play was a very obvious dive. Maybe he got mixed up.

The first was a dive, second was leg on leg. He said, "Ronaldo needs to stop being a baby and complaining all the time, we've seen him dive twice already."

ya not as if we had a qualifying group about 20times more difficult than the usa did due to the fact we're in a continent that actualy has good teams.

not to mention the fact we got fucked over by fifa, thiery henry and his handball!

The guy who made this is from Holland man. I don't know what the USA have to do with it.

That's an example of how he's searching at google or wikipedia. I think he is just a guy who's betting a few dollars on each game. However, brazil was giving a really good performance yesterday. They're havinga good chance for becoming the runner up or winning the title.

spain resemble barcelona so closely, while brazil is essentially the international version of inter. if they were to clash, i suspect a similar result, which would suck. quite frankly, brazil don't deserve to win this time around.

Have you guys seen spain? Very surprising to say the least! They are lucky that the other teams in the group aren't that good, so 2 wins should still do it for them. When Brazil finishes first in their group and spain second cos of their loss today, the two favorites will meet in the 1/8 final!

My mistake. So Spain aren't playing possession football, along the veins of total football, much like Barca? And Brazil haven't adopted a European style which is based on the need to win at all costs? "

Whether you turn on the style or play ugly, the important thing is that come 11 July, Brazil are in the final," - Maicon

I mean come on. The core of Spain is essentially Barcelona; they even have the same players, and while the same isn't true of Brazil, their defensive line has quite a few Inter players.
