I only know the first four. I went with Mew. The Mars Volta is extremely talented too, but Mew is almost perfection to me. Coheed is good too. But Muse's latest album was a huge disappointement to me.
So if I like Mew, Muse, The Mars Volta, and Coheed, will I enjoy Oceansize and Porcupine Tree? Just wondering...

Would have said TMV but I went with Mew. They're more consistent. Both have three really good albums (Deloused, Frances, Bedlam and Frengers, ATGHK, No Stories) but Mew doesn't have any bad albums.

Rx Bandits are an up and coming Prog band now, after changing their sound.

But out of these, I have to go with TMV.

There really doesn't need to be a poll for this. TMV is the best. No doubt.

Honestly, I HATED The Resistance the first couple months I had it. I just couldn't get on board with the new sound. But it slowly but surely grabbed ahold of me and although it's still not my fav by them, I have really grown to appreciate it a lot. Plus I bought it on double vinyl and it sounds freakin fantastic. I like every song but Unnatural Selection. Yes, even Guiding Light.

However, Neutron Star Collision is complete shit and that better be the last of that.

Mars Volta. No Constest. Way better musicians than any of the others here and they've never done anything bad.

Other prog bands woulda been RX Bandits, Minus the Bear, Portugal. The Man, and The Fall of Troy

even if you dont care for the other bands, all them have talent. to say "no contest" is a little much..

But i do like the other bands. theyre talented, but TMV has been doing something way more ambitious and different than any of the other bands and theyve been doing it well. Omar is one of the most talented guitarists that there has ever been, Cedric has an amazing range and pushes the envelope for vocalists with his live show and his lyrics, and the drummers have always been unbelievable. They're pure artists. They have never compromised for anyone else and they will always be pushing music forward at the edge of their abilities. Muse used to be way better until this recent album, Coheed has phoned it in on a couple occasions and No World For Tomorrow was a disappointment for me. Porcupine tree is pretty good and Oceansize and Mew are awesome but I just don't think that they hold a flame to TMV...But that's just what i think

Muse for sure. They're one of my favorite bands and Matthew Bellamy is an awesome pianist.

I am in love with Mew. I used to like Coheed but can't listen to them anymore. Same goes for the Mars Volta. I personally find Muse's music to suck donkey balls. I saw Oceansize live once. Hated it. What are porcupine tree like? For Mew fans?

while I have mad respect for them all as musicians, Muse has become the least indulgent of them all, and sure while indulgence is synonymous with prog, or at least was in the 70's, technical skill isnt the same as brilliant songcraft, in todays world the combination of both should define what is in fact, progressive.

The Mars Volta released De-Loused in the Comatorium, which was the best album of the previous decade as far as I'm concerned. They get my vote.

Mew

Out of these choices, easily Mew. I would say they are the only band here that never compromise between the balance of being progressive in their ideas and also crafting well-made popular song. Mars Volta lose touch with actually creating enjoyable music even though they are possibly the most progressive, and Muse have been compromising progressiveness for simple pop.

But I really wish TREOS were still around to be included on this list.

Coheed and Cambria by a mile. Love all of their albums.

Surprised to see The Mars Volta so high. Everything they've released besides De-loused has been mediocre.

Porcupine Tree isn't a new prog band; they've been around for over 20 years. They still win though. No contest. Not only is Steven Wilson one of the best songwriters in the world of prog, but can any of these other bands get Alex Lifeson and Robert Fripp to guest on their songs?
