this has been an object of much debate and inquiry on my part. So I call out to you guys.

How do you classify punk pop? Catchy hooks? Lyrics about love and teenage angst? Or something completely different. I ask becasue after listening to a lot of the Ramones and Clash, I noticed some of the songs there could fall under the category of punk pop. SO what is punk pop?

i just don't worry about how bands are labelled, it doesnt matter what genre a band fall's under. if you like em, listen to them, if you dont, then don't listen to them.

I don't know about everyone else, but I can usually tell pretty quickly from listening. The horrible truth is, most pop-punk bands don't sound anything like punk at all. More accurately, the members may have grown up and been influenced by punk, but they took it in a different direction. I know I am about to over-simplify this, but punk generally concerns issues that affect lots of people. Pop-punk tends to be more about personal issues, namely, girls.

The Clash are undeniably punk, they just were very open-minded about including other influences. The spirit was always punk though. The Ramones tried desperately to play pop songs, but were just not talented. Most call them punk because of the time at which they arrived. A good example of how this line can be blurry is Lifetime. They generally sounded very punk, but their lyrics were always pop. As they progressed, the playing became clearer and it was evident they were a pop-punk band all along. Proven when Saves the Day completely ripped them off for their first album, which STD admitted. Pop-punk bands don't have to be bad, and aren't necessarily worse that punk bands, they're just different.

I hate using the word punk..to me it seems so....fake...i don't realy know I don't classify bands anymore unless its for a sake of organization..but in terms of opinion..I don't give a flying fuck.

I'm not a huge fan of classifying every band and pigeonholing them. But, let's face it, genres do exist. Some bands really do sound punk. I'm not talking about the ideology of punk, just from a musical standpoint. The biggest difficulty in classifying a band is that they generally evolve (well, not AC/DC) throughout a career. So, I find myself using rock to describe a lot of bands. At the end of the day though, a genre really doesn't matter much. The most useful part of it is to help you find similar bands. So yeah, don't worry so much about what to call a band, though a proper title probably does exist.

Punker than thou attitudes are really pretty lame on a message board. Pop-punk is like every other style, there are good and bad bands. Maybe you don't like it as much as punk, but that's an opinion. I will listen to Jawbreaker and Lifetime anyday over a shitty punk band.

Well IN my mind Jawbreaker mixed parts of emo, punk, post-punk, and a little hardcore in some songs to be their own style. But yea boxcar is a great song.

Jawbreaker probably combined pop-punk and grunge more than any other genres. I feel that pop-punk was the more central style, something that they cop to in their own bio. Can you blame everyone for referring to them as a pop-punk band? Well, no, because that's a big part of who they are. The problem is in that pop-punk has become synonymous with shit. So yes, they have a lot more going on that that. As they progressed, they also dropped a lot of the grunge. In summary, Jawbreaker kicks ass.

well, thanks for the input. I dunno if any of you realized it, but I meant for this to be a serious topic. I wasn't bashing pop punk or asking if you liked it. I wanted to know how one would classify pop punk and I actually wanted to know opinions on the subject matter for person knowledge. this wasn;t a gimmick post, but a legitimate question on my part, and thank you to all those who realized it and responded as such.
