zeppelin, easily.

talent: every member of zeppelin is within the top 20 rock musicians in whatever instrument they played. the only real head to head competition is between the guitarists, iommi and page, but i feel like page wins by a small margin.
range: led zep has one of, if not the, most diverse catalogues in music history. they touched on nearly every genre you could expect a four piece rock and roll band to attempt.
innovativeness: jimmy page and john paul jones are two of the best technicians to ever play their instruments, and were miles beyond most bands of the time in the recording studio. also, zep incorporated such a wide array of instruments into their songs.
influence: while this may be where the race between these two bands is closest, i still think the influence set by zeppelin can be seen in a wider and more diverse group of artists, where as sabbath's impact rests mainly in metal and all of it's subgenres.
lasting value: this is not an attempt to make sabbath's legacy illegitimate, but they will be often linked with the sideshow that was ozzy. while led zeppelin definitely wasn't without their share of distractions from the music, i feel like they will be taken more seriously throughout music history.

in my mind (i've said it before in these threads), the beatles, led zeppelin and radiohead are the three best bands of all time.

Black Sabbath was way more original and creative. They had a tighter sound and more consistent albums. Ozzy is a fantastic vocalist and Iommi was known for being a talented guitarist (despite losing a finger or two in a machine) while Page should have stuck to the acoustic guitar. I'll give Zeppelin versatility, but in terms of overall sound, I'd go with Black Sabbath for sure.

I think a better question is who is better: Jimmy Page or Tony Iommi?

As a guitarist: Page. As a writer: Still Page.

I understand the influence on metal Sabbath had, but Led Zeppelin pisses all over them imo

I can see why someone would like sabbath more, especially if they're really into metal, but zeppelin is hands down better for these reasons:

zeppelin, easily.

talent: every member of zeppelin is within the top 20 rock musicians in whatever instrument they played. the only real head to head competition is between the guitarists, iommi and page, but i feel like page wins by a small margin.

Also, Plant has a better voice/range than Ozzy does IMO

Agreed, Sabbath is good, but Zeppelin is legendary. Sabbath made some memorable hits, rock singles you can hear on the radio, but Zeppelin made albums of epic proportions. If I hear a Zeppelin song on the radio and it isn't in context with the entire album, I become a bit disappointed. I can name a ton of Sabbath songs off the top of my head, but I can't remember the album names. I can name every Zeppelin album off the top of my head, but I can't remember the titles of very many tracks. I think they were too very different bands in terms of their musical aspirations and the influence they wanted to have. Zeppelin sought out to be rock gods, and they achieved that status. Sabbath wanted to party and make a lot of money, and they did, but they won't ever have a "IV" or a "Stairway to Heaven." Ozzy has become a punch line, a parody of himself. Plant has evolved and is making music in entirely different genres and working with musicians like Alison Kraus.

Pretty much sums up my feelings. Also, I think it's time I revisit Led Zeppelin for a spell. It's been far too long since I've spun any of their albums.

Radiohead is good, but I don't think you can put them anywhere near the Beatles or Zep...

Don't get me wrong dude, I do love Led Zeppelin when the time is right, and when I'm in the mood. But I think that Black Sabbath is the better band. I feel that they had a stronger and more consistent career as a band, and were a more original group of musicians.

When I was a big metal head I always thought Sabbath was the greatest band of all time for pretty much inventing the genre, but now that I have familiarized myself with Zeppelin's discography, it's hard to deny that they are the better band. Two of my all-time favorites though.

Sabbath-scary to suburbia
