Brandon Herbel

I get the chance to sit down with HelloGoodbye (http://www.hellogoodbye.net) for an interview next week and I need fans to submit questions. Leave any questions that you might have for the band in the replies and I will do my best to get them all answered.

what will be the second single off the new album? do you have the concept of the video?

capnshindig

Ask them about what they said about AP.net

And ask about why they used so many demos on the full length.

And ask Forrest if he intends to write cheesy/lovey dovey lyrics to fit the music or if they just come out that way.

Ask about Warped Tour, whether it was worth it, fun or not, if they got ridiculed (especially by NOFX and HORSE the Band) and did they have to pay those people marching around with signs advertising the full-length.

Ask Forrest if he still dates the girl that "Oh, It's Love" is about.

Are they planning on another DVD full of videos like they did for the EP.

How did they choose their single?

Why did Homewrecker come out on a compilation so long ago, but the actually CD much later?

will they ever release anything from hellogoodbye182?

errka03
09/25/06, 08:39 AM
ask them if there's a song that the band holds near and dear to their heart.

k thanks.

Because a good portion of Z! A! V! D! had been out there already, what are your plans for the next release? Will you work with entirely new material or will we get some "oldies" like this time?

geekusa18
09/25/06, 08:42 AM
ask them how shitty they think NOFX is, and if they have any stand on current politics.

ask them their favorite blink 182 songs/records/videos

do they play any video games in their spare time? if so which?

ask them why all the ladies love them

Rush Hour or Lethal Weapon?

favorite band as a kid (if 182, then who else?)

what types of music majorly influenced their newest album?

what's their favorite position

that is all :-)

When is the next cd coming out? Will you make another video and if so for what song? How is Gordy these days, is the fame going to his head?

I'd like to know why Forrest changed his name from Scott.

Also if he still has a crush on Sarah Michelle Gellar.

How come you re-recorded so many songs that were initially going to be released on your 2002 full-length, instead of writing more new material?

And do they know yet whether their newer material will continue in the direction of "All of Your Love" and "Here in Your Arms" (cause I think they're excellent)?

Are you tired of playing certain songs/if yes, which?

Do you keep the same set list everynight/do you mix up the songs/order?

Is it hard to re-create the songs live?

Will there be a TEN/HGB tour next year?

What do you like to do when traveling/not doing shows but on the road?

What is the song writting process (lyrics first or instruments first)?

What other DTR bands (besides TEN) do you enjoy/would like to tour with?
---- Can you please take Houston Calls on tour w/you next time? ;)

Thx for making great songs!

Did DTR have anything to do with the mountain dew contest being predetermined? how do you feel that it wasnt a legit contest seeing that votes didnt matter since mtv knew before things had been taped that you guys were the winners?

why did you have someone put up posters over other bands posters to promote set times during the warped tour? do you not care about how hard other bands work to make sure they are up early and get things up for fans to see?

do you feel like your live show is at its best? don't you ever feel like the costumes and antics take away from the music people came to see you play?
how much auto-tone do you guys use?
did you really burn a poster of fall out boy on stage? if so, why do you dislike them so much?
after having music/video on trl, are you disappointed to have never been featured on the countdown? why do you think HGB never got to that point? would you even want to be featured on the countdown?
you openly put down other bands in sometimes immature ways, so what bands can you honestly not stand?
what would you like people to take away from the new record? what meaning does it hold for you as a band, or was it more in fun?
what's the story behind the title of the new album?
where do you see HGB in 10 years? what do you say to people who think your music has no staying power?
what is the song writing process like for you all as a band? how high do you hold lyrics?

in all fairness, that is a GOOD question

ask them what their fave song is to play live

ask them depsite all the drama going on with DTR nowadays, do u still feel the same connection that other bands did back in their heyday

you are a brave man for interviewing them. when i interviewed jesse and marcus, they basically told me I looked like a 9 year old and mocked every question I asked.

this one i gotta address!

well the first one, whatever... i dont know that it was fixed or anything. but we maybe got that vibe. i dont know any evidence to prove that. but you know. mtv.

number twosie. this is one of those weird things where you're like "... what?". i dont know what youre talking about and ive read this a few times. IF anyone who worked for us put posters over somebody elses (which they all told us they didn't) i got no connection to that shit dawg! so ease up on me!

this is good fun i'll tackle a bunch of these.

Do you think "California" is a good name for a dog? And shout out to Chelsea for me!
yeah thats a good one. its no gordie.

brandon,
you are a brave man for interviewing them. when i interviewed jesse and marcus, they basically told me I looked like a 9 year old and mocked every question I asked.
You are a very brave man,-Myra
gurl, i'd never do anything like that do you. BUT jesse and marcus are foolios. they get together and they get alllll fired up quoting obscure things no one picks up on, making inside jokes, saying odd things and touching eachother innappropriately. theyre quite a team and im sure they meant nothing against you. you probably just set them up for some quote that sounded like a dig but it was just quote. trust me. jesse is all about being personable. hes a hippe. he smokes hippie ciggs. also i will say that sometimes two or three minutes come across wrong to one person and they get the whole wrong idea about somebody. i mean take me for example, i read sometimes that im the biggest jerk in california or that im not thaaat bad. its quite a range you know.

Just how much has blink-182 influenced you and your music?
id probably not much. but secretly, subconciously, tons... probably. they sure knew how to use the classic 1 5 7 3 progression to their advantage.

do you feel like your live show is at its best? don't you ever feel like the costumes and antics take away from the music people came to see you play?
we're really excited to try alot of new things live this fall. we were ont he road for so long stop that we never got a chance to buy new things, learn new songs, learn how to juggle, etc. we really only do that costume stuff during one song, and not everytime. and that song is like a vengaboys song... so i dunno how much it could be taking away from the musical integrity of our performance. but thats to say we think we're a joke or whatever. we just like to have a good time. real drunk you know?

how much auto-tone do you guys use?
like on our record? theres some songs that have a ton and some that have none you know? its funny how vocal effects are automatically a huge turn off to most people (note taken.) but its just an effect... like distortion on your guitar or a boss digital delay or a moogerfooger or compression or eq or reverb or whatever. its not used as a crutch, its used as a special effect. i read a review of the new justin timberlake cd (however you feel about it) and they were all like "the singer is singing through a guitar amp and i dont even think he can sing ew" and its like... he can sing... its an effect. sexyback sucks compared to mylove anyways.

did you really burn a poster of fall out boy on stage? if so, why do you dislike them so much?
hahaha. no. not true.

after having music/video on trl, are you disappointed to have never been featured on the countdown? why do you think HGB never got to that point? would you even want to be featured on the countdown?
nah i dont care really. that woulda been cool, but im seriosuly happy to just keep keepin on. its probably better below that level anyways i just wanna slow down and get some time to mess around in the studio and be uh you know creative. if we were on trl itd mean more interviews (as you can see i even seek them out on the internet) and a buncha stuff that would stress me out!

you openly put down other bands in sometimes immature ways, so what bands can you honestly not stand?
i want a follow up on this question. what are you talking about? who did we put down? in an immature way? people love to talk on message boards about how immature people behave. like richard and stefanie. im just about sure richard and stefanie are more mature than the writer of this question.

what would you like people to take away from the new record? what meaning does it hold for you as a band, or was it more in fun?
well uhm its all about love. so i would like for people to just uhm be in love. down wit da haters ya know? but hopefully it also holds a musical quality some people will think is neat. i always like cds that are varied and have tons of different vibes and sounds. theres tons of records where you get a basic drum sound and record 11 songs then lay down the bass on all of them and then guitars with the same tone etc. and it totally works for some records but the ones love are the ones that break it out a whole lot more.

what's the story behind the title of the new album?
we're idiots.

where do you see HGB in 10 years? what do you say to people who think your music has no staying power?
sounds like you're one of those people? im shooting for something like what matt mahaffey formorly of self (currently of wired all wrong! check that shit out) has going. i just want to keep making music and thinking of new ideas for this or that and making designs and all sorts of stuff. i wanna be able to everything myself as much as i can. i want to have a rad home studio and keep honing my photoshop skillz haha. im like pretty good at PHP too. anyways i just wanna keep doing it. in ten years hopefully either hellogoodbye will still be around but wearing more make up and extravagant outfits or i'll be at home recording the new phantom planet cd and nursing my then old dog.

what is the song writing process like for you all as a band? how high do you hold lyrics?
usually i come up with something, a guitar riff or a melody or something on the piano then i make some phizat beats on the computer and jam over and over layering stuff and saying random words to get a melody. but its nice cause you kinda get a vibe for like what kinda words sound good with the music. i dunno, like maybe i dont know what im gonna sing about yet but i know that "scantily" sounds really good at this one part. then ive got a skeleton of a song up and i solidify lyrics while fleshing out the song side by side. lyrics are important though, i never make anything weird up i just try to relate what is just kinda coming out with what makes sense to me.

Dear HelloGoodbye,
Why are you so gay and lame?
thank you,
josh*
hey josh, you sound cute. wanna date?

Ask them about what they said about AP.net
that was misunderstood i think. i posted some shiz about that already. all i meant was that it feeds into something terrible when you read press about yourself. but you can't help but do it. its just too tempting to see the exact number of people on the internet that hate you without knowing you!

And ask about why they used so many demos on the full length.
we meant to release those so long ago. we were SUPPOSED to record forever but we just kept touring. those songs were never properly recorded or released and we always intended to. i think its good that they're out now and we can move on for next time. they were just sitting around in limbo, we had to show them some mercy. the good news is theres no more of that stuff left (well at least stuff we always intended to re record and release) so its all gravy from here on out.

And ask Forrest if he intends to write cheesy/lovey dovey lyrics to fit the music or if they just come out that way.
im a real cheesy guy. i hate watching movies with people cheating on each other or other wrongish things. i saw one episode of sopranos and was traumatized. everyone told me it was the worst of the bunch though. but yeah. im real pg. thats just the way it is homeboy. so SUCK IT.

Ask about Warped Tour, whether it was worth it, fun or not, if they got ridiculed (especially by NOFX and HORSE the Band) and did they have to pay those people marching around with signs advertising the full-length.
it was real fun. i like the summer. and i like wearing shorts (NOT IN A GAY WAY). there was always something to do. like stop by and see sherwood or play bocce ball with the NOV. actualy nofx never ridiculed us. even when we went on immediatley before them. they saved that for underoath. nofx knows themselves some respect. horse the band? no not them either. anti flag MIGHT have. overall we heard there was all kinds of warped drama but we were totally not included. oh and yeah we paid that guy. of course!

Ask Forrest if he still dates the girl that "Oh, It's Love" is about.
you know i do playa!

Are they planning on another DVD full of videos like they did for the EP.
hopefully not!

How did they choose their single?
it was OBVIOUS becaue here in your arms has lyrics that are like an avril lavigne song. so like duh right?

Why did Homewrecker come out on a compilation so long ago, but the actually CD much later?
because we had to keep touring and couldn't record : ( wahzorrsss.

alright im real tired of this now. but it was real fun for a while. i feel more comfortable giving answers to the anonymous internet then to a scary interviewer standing infront of me so thanks for the soapbox mr bill gates.

ps sorry if i ruined the interview i was just on a damn roll. i'll re answer any for you bando. i left some for ya too.

Some threw shit at you. Some absolutely adored you and sung along like they'd written the songs themselves. Were you surprised at the difference in crowds for your UK shows with Taking Back Sunday?

How do you react to criticisms that your full-length was over-produced, e.g. the newer 'Touchdown Turnaround'?

Who might you bring to the UK on your first headlining tour here in January? Plz bring Brandtson.
