I own a 4GB 3rd Generation iPod Nano. I’m thinking of getting a new iPod so I can get more space for TV shows and movies and music videos. I looked up two different models—the iPod Classic and the iPod Touch. I’m trying to decide which to get. In the replies, could you give useful advice onto which one I should purchase and say why you think I should buy it? Here are some of my preferences if you need them:

1. I want plenty of space. Enough to have many TV Shows and movies and music videos.

2. I want something simple and something that is easy to use.

3. I want the software run on the iPod to be generally reliable.

4. I want something that is worth the money I’m going to pay for it.

Thanks for your help.

Edit: Oh, and this has nothing to do with what you own already. Even if you own a Classic and you'd rather a Touch, or vice versa, vote for the one you'd like the most.

I personally think the touch is a huge waste of money...alot less space and not nearly as convenient for what I want it to do...which is play music...which is the whole reason I bought an mp3 player in the first place.

If you want space for cheaper, go with the classic. If you want simple, go with the classic. If you want to pay extra for less space that will most likely become overrun by trivial apps, go with the touch

160 GB Classic that I own.

I also own a Droid as a phone.

I am happy with my purchases.

iPod Classic.
I have an iPhone so an iPod Touch would be redundant.

i literally made this exact decision a week ago. i went classic. unless it breaks, i doubt ill ever need to buy a new one ever again. meanwhile, the touch is like 400 for 64gb. classic = superior

Personally I like the iPod Touch a lot more because of the better interface, the apps, and the wi-fi, among other things. I use it for a lot more than just the music player, especially when I'm on campus since I don't have a laptop (I don't have a smart phone though, or things would probably be a little different). I'd take it over a Classic any day. However, your number one priority here is storage space, as it should be since you want to have lots of movies and TV shows on your device. For this reason alone you should get the Classic because you'll most likely feel cramped on a Touch. Obviously it's a smaller screen though, so watching all those videos won't be as enjoyable.

For me, it's all about the music, so the more storage space and the better the price is what I'm looking for. I bought an iPod Classic for around $250 shortly after Christmas that was 120 GB. The biggest Touch at the time was a 64 GB and was $400. For me, it was a no brainer. If I want wi fi, and all the other perks I'd rather just have a smart phone.

I see no reason for me to put many movies and tv shows on my ipod. Therefore I choose ipod classic.

iPod classic.

Itouch is a huge waste of money. Its for people who want an iPhone but don't want to be one of the people who constantly play with their iphones. So they get an itouch even though everyone will still think you're a douche with an iphone.

iPod classic for sure. That's 160gb. TONS of space for music, TV, and movies. I wish my iPod had that much space. :(

If you're using it for video, get the touch. If you want more space, get the classic. Overall, I'd recommend the touch, but neither one is perfect.

edit: I have a 5th gen 30gb iPod Video (wasn't called "classic" then), and a 2nd gen 32gb touch. I use the touch a lot more because I have music and what essentially amounts to a PDA (which sounds outdated, but by that I mean calendar, contacts, etc.) with me at all times. Plus, as someone whose main way of listening to music involves a CD/record player, it's nice to have the full-screen cover art/cover flow. Also, as someone who has ~27 of the 29.6gb on his touch filled with music, it's nice to not have to scroll through hundreds of artists to find what I want; I can search or touch the letter and bingo. The "classic" has its pros, but from what I've heard newer versions actually have worse sound output--I suppose it's because Apple wants everyone to have an iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. I really hope they come out with an mp3 player that is both high-capacity and high-quality, but I've yet to see one.

edit2: if you want to watch movies, get a TV; I don't know anyone who could stand 2 hours in front of a 3-inch screen watching what was meant to be played on something 30' tall.

The iPod touch has VERY limited space

I'm someone who has a vast library (60,000 or so songs) and I hate having to find stuff to untick and leave off... It'd be impossible with a touch obviously. Only a Classic will do - I've got a 120GB one, but I think they do a 160GB one now right? I'm waiting for a 200GB so I can put EVERYTHING on there (I'm sure I'd still run out of space in a few weeks - it's like OCD or something ... I have to fill it)

I don't have any movies / music videos / games on there though - purely for music. I guess it depends on the person but personally I can't watch movies on it, and I couldn't on the touch either - too small.

If it's only for songs and video, go for the classic. The touch is good if you want something versatile and use other apps.

Personally, the only reason I would ever own an iPod is for web browsing... So, I would go Touch.

I like the touch. I do not have internet on my phone, so the wi-fi can come in handy at times. The limited space doesnt bother me much because, I really do not need my entire music library on me at all times.

well I own a touch and is a pretty awesome device... Its functions are almost unlimited because of the app store and personally for me 32 gb is a lot of space but if what you want is music and space then buy the classic... but be aware that watching videos in the touch is a lot better that in the classic

Classic solely for space.

The Touch is all for show. Sure, it can do some cool stuff but I personally think that means there's just more to screw up. I have a 160G and wouldn't swap for anything.

Oh dear
06/11/10, 11:52 PM
I say it all depends on what you want to do with it. If you want apps and video, the iPod Touch. If you want space for your millions of illegally downloaded songs, iPod Classic. ;)

It kind of seems like Apple is trying to rid the market of iPod Classics in favor of the more flashy, more expensive, less capacity Touch and Nanos. Any Apple lovers have thoughts on that?

I understand I'm not huge on watching movies on a ipod screen but when i'm traveling it would be nice to have, you know?

I was already leaning Classic, but I just wanted feedback from other people since most people I know own Nanos. An I pretty much thought that AP.net would be the best place to ask. But yeah, I guess I could have answered this myself.

Depends. Are the shows and videos what matter to you the most? If so, then it's important to know that--at least in my experience--videos are too wide for the iPod Classic screen. By which I mean the sides of them are cut off. If that's what matters the most to you, then go with the Touch. If bodacious amounts of storage space is what matters to you, go with the Classic.

Would never use a Touch. Pointless for me. I have a lap top for internet, couldn't give a shit about apps, and just want space. My 80GB classic is full though :-( I constantly have to delete stuff. Need the money for the 160.

I have a 64 gig ipod touch. I almost have it filled up, but i love the wifi with it. Videos are also much better on the touch. If you have the cash, then just dish it out. You'll love it. I still have a 32 gig ipod classic and it was great when I used it.

I've fiddled around with both (my sis owns a touch and I own a classic). Personally, I find touch really annoying. If it's the space you're in need of, get the classic iPod.

What's the current biggest iPod classic storage btw?

I have and like both - I keep all of my music on my Classic, and I use the Touch strictly for videos, games, web surfing, et cetera. The Touch is a terrible choice for music IMO - Nowhere near enough storage space.

It depends if you have lots of music like me you would already have the largest iTouch full therefore there is no reason to get anything other than the classic

If you're not interested in playing a bunch of sweet games go for the Classic for sure. Also, if you're gonna be using it in areas where it can get damaged, iTouch is pretty much useless.

I like the iPod Touch for the "easy to use" features. Easy to find a song in an instant and a way better screen for viewing video. As much as I love the iPod Touch, it has its flaws. I have had to restore mine several times due to its glitches in my music library (having the wrong artwork, not syncing as fast as it normally does, not syncing at all, etc).
I also have an iPod Classic which I was my main iPod before I get the iPod Touch last year. I enjoy the faster syncing, no glitches, plenty of capacity to spare, and the durability. A big thing for me in buying an iPod Classic would be the way the iPod stores its content, using a format similar to a flash drive, so if you have an unreliable computer or are moving computers, you could easily get back your files without a third party expensive program that probably won't work. So, these are the pros and cons of both options.
For the reasons mentioned, I would say the iPod Classic is what you want. You are getting some major benefits, but sadly, you are missing out on the easy navigation and the other sweet features the iPod Touch. :-( If price is no problem and you want capacity and lots of cool features, get a 64 GB iPod Touch. If you want more capacity for a cheaper price with more reliability, go with the iPod Classic. Hopefully you find this helpful, I wish you the best of luck with your purchase.
