None of these bands are really what comes to mind when I think indie though, especially MGMT.
Then what does? I'm just curious. Labels can be confusing. When I think of indie, I think of Death Cab for Cutie, Pavement, Dear and the Headlights, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, and other bands like that. Or am I way off?

Kids, Time To Pretend, and Electric Feel, but most importantly, Kids, all used painfully simplistic verse chorus verse chorus etc hooks and generic electronic beats to carry their songs across. those singles are what made them so famous, not their other, more 'difficult' material, speaking of which, copied countless bands now considered to be psychedelic / classic rock. it's all been done before.
as for musicianship, big deal. as for Congratulations, i wouldn't touch it w/ a ten foot poll. i've heard it's 'more left-fiedl' and less of an attempt at pop music hits, but nevertheless what made them successful is OS. regardless it's ony my opinion that nothing this band shits out is remotely fun or interesting for me to listen to.

I'm not a fan of MGMT. I saw them a couple of times before they signed to a major label (my friend actually managed them until that point), and they were interesting. They have a few good songs, but I just can't even listen to their new album. Animal Collective has a few good songs, and I like them. I don't listen to Grizzly Bear. I do, however, like Dirty Projectors. They're weird as shit, but for some reason I like them.
