Grizzly Bear. Ed's voice is hauntingly beautiful, and they're all such talented musicians.
I like Dirty Projectors, haven't heard the new MGMT album but thought the first was okay, and I think Animal Collective is way over hyped.
MGMT > Dirty Projectors > Grizzly Bear. Never really liked Animal Collective.

Animal Collective easily, they're the best musicians, songwriters, and have been around the longest.
then Grizzly Bear have tons of talent, but can't write songs like AC in terms of experimental pop bliss
then Dirty Projectors, who i don't even listen to but know they've got some talent
MGMT can suck a bag of dicks. SO bad. few words for them.
then again this poll is one of those attempts to gather common 'indie' household names when all four are completely different and mostly incomparable other than terms of popularity. on other grounds this poll makes absolutely no sense.

you're right. i took the 'it' indie bands, having listened to them all and knowing that they don't sound very similar, and turned it into a poll. the point isn't comparing and contrasting the sonic value, it's finding out which band people like more so they can discuss why that band and not the others. what i would like to see is people saying more than "MGMT can suck a bag of dicks" (although i did find that hilarious), and explain why they suck. other than that part, you did a pretty good job with why you liked the other bands.
Late 90's Modest Mouse. Yeah, I'm going to be that guy.

ok i understand where you're coming from. you're catering to the common misconception of the 'indie ideal' which includes these four bands. nevertheless MGMT should be excluded because:
A. they're purely a mainstream pop band, by far more so a pop band than any other band on the list
B. they copy concepts and ideas of many of the early "classic rock" and psychedelic bands that originated long before them, not to mention blatantly ripoff some of the stuff this band used to do:
http://www.myspace.com/thesleepyjackson
basically all that they do has been done decades before them, all they're contributing to mainstream music is an accessible modernized version of that with dance beats
C. their music is painfully simple and, basically, annoying as all fuck
D. they lack any or all of the musicianship that other bands have
there's other reasons that escape me at the moment, but i don't really need to post any more.

I've never listened to Dirty Projectors. Grizzly Bear is really good, and I think I remember liking Animal Collective, but I only listened to the once or twice. I need to again. MGMT's first album at least (haven't heard the second) is pretty awesome, but I don't see why it's lumped with the others.
None of these bands are really what comes to mind when I think indie though, especially MGMT.

you failed a second time to explain, all you did was say 'they aren't this, they aren't that.'
how are they not a mainstream pop band? that essentially is what Oracular Spectacular achieved. Kids, Time To Pretend, and Electric Feel, but most importantly, Kids, all used painfully simplistic verse chorus verse chorus etc hooks and generic electronic beats to carry their songs across. those singles are what made them so famous, not their other, more 'difficult' material, speaking of which, copied countless bands now considered to be psychedelic / classic rock. it's all been done before.
as for musicianship, big deal. as for Congratulations, i wouldn't touch it w/ a ten foot poll. i've heard it's 'more left-fiedl' and less of an attempt at pop music hits, but nevertheless what made them successful is OS. regardless it's ony my opinion that nothing this band shits out is remotely fun or interesting for me to listen to.
and as for 'most music,' i don't really know if you get out much, but MGMT certainly is 'most music.'

funny thing is they wrote kids, time to pretend, and electric feel as jokes to prove its easy to write a pop song (although i still think those songs are really good), read the june article of Q magazine, it talks about that. 2, everythings been done before pal, and obviously is sounds like u havent even listened to congratulations or given it a chance at all

06/17/10, 10:52 PM
plus your hating a band for 'ripping' off a style that isnt common in mainstream pop (psychedelic/classic rock), so why is it a bad thing if they are bringing a different style instead of other mainstream pop shit? im not rewarding them for 'ripping' stuff off though, but i do think they have a way more original sound then other 'mainstream pop' bands so i dont really agree that they are nothing new

one more thing, dont argue they suck cause they arent "fun or interesting to listen to". BULLSHIT if youre arguing that let me say this - indie music isnt fun to listen to, its 'cool'. HA. and u cant tell me kids and those singles arent fun to listen to and that congratulations isnt interesting.

Perfect. So basically, fuck this poll, it's all about Modest Mouse.
I'm not a fan of MGMT. I saw them a couple of times before they signed to a major label (my friend actually managed them until that point), and they were interesting. They have a few good songs, but I just can't even listen to their new album. Animal Collective has a few good songs, and I like them. I don't listen to Grizzly Bear. I do, however, like Dirty Projectors. They're weird as shit, but for some reason I like them.

Animal Collective is awesome, Grizzly Bear's Yellow House is an amazing amazing album but I'm not that fond of Veckatimest, MGMT is alright but I've gotten kind of bored with them, and I've only heard Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors but I dig that album a whole lot.
So, I guess if I had to choose one from these four it would be AC.
But, I back whoever said Modest Mouse.

to AP staff: I think something needs to be done about the polls. More often than not, on the front page I see something useless followed by the poll's options, no question, and I have to click on the thread and roll my mouse over the tab on top to see the big ass title. <- IMO
without picking a favorite, I wanted to say that while I loved the Dirty Projectors' single, I could not get into the album. It made me sad...ish.

But as for this poll: AC then Dirty Projectors. The other two don't interest me too much, but no way should MGMT be included in this list, even if they are trying their darndest to join the same ranks.
