The couple of time that I watched the first season, it felt scripted, at the very least, heavily influenced by outside forces.

I picture it being like an improv troupe. They have an idea and work with that. In LB's case, they are guided (almost forced) in a direction, but aren't given a script.

Anything on MTV is scripted. Even shows which weren't made by MTV but are shown on it are just for being on that channel.

I forgot who it was, but from the first and second seasons a dude was on MTV Canada and said it was "reality tv" in the sense that they weren't given scripts and it was improvs, but .. they held auditions for parts at their highschool.

The only reason why there are no scenes at the highschool is because that was the weekend with the whole Justin Timberlake / Janet Jackson and the school didn't want to be apart of it anymore fearing something similar happening on "Laguna Beach"

I haven't seen the new series, yet, though. I don't want to get into it again, haha.

The show is mostly un-scripted, but if there was a big fight that the cast had and the cameras missed it then they would make them react it out again.

it's not scripted, but the producers(and the cast) have admitted to forcing the "story" through those really awkward conversations, where the cast are told to talk about the situation at hand. It's just a really weird way of advancing real drama through artificial means.

the truth is it isnt technically scripted but if the camera crew misses something "juicy" then they have those dumb broads and douches re-enact anything they might have missed.
