View Full Version : Robert Downey Jr is Tony Stark
so it just hit the net that robert downey jr has been cast as iron man. if you haven't heard, the movie is being directed by jon favreau for a may 2008 release. i could not be happier with this news, as i think that is a 100% perfect casting choice, and one i had never considered myself (i'd been pulling for johnny depp). thoughts?

Johnny Depp might have been good, but I like Downey Jr.
I hope somewhere down the road the marvel characters run into each other in the movies, ie. spider-man and iron man.

I think this choice is perfect, as I went into in greater detail in the comics thread. They did a perfect job in realizing that Iron Man didn't have to be perfect, but Tony Stark did. Stark is perfect.

Isn't it just a tad bit ironic that they'd cast Robert Downy Jr. to play one of the few super heroes with a substance abuse problem?

Thats what the ultimates said.
I think he'll do a good job
I hope for the same thing, I atleast wish they would make mention of each other in the movies. That way when they do the Avengers movie it will tie together.

I bet it will.
Also I have a good feeling that the movie plot will come from the recent Extremis story, not the whole story but definatlly the details it added to his origin. God that was a great stroy, I reccomend it to any one who want to read a great Iron man stroy

hmmm I had an iron man action figure when I was kid, it was pretty sweet
But yeah, I'm pretty excited about this movie, I think he'll be good for the part..but theres still plenty of time till it comes out - so who knows

Iron Man had a pretty sweet animated show on fox kids when I was little. The Marvel Action Hour kicked ass.
it's also been HEAVILY rumored that terrence howard (who's quickly becoming one of my favorite actors) will be playing jim rhodes, who in the comic later becomes war machine. i'd been losing faith in marvel films lately, but this is shaping up to be one of marvel's best movies. can't wait to see more from this.
ya, it should be pretty good. the casting choice says something about the direction that the movie will probably take, too.. i like it.

This is, without a doubt, the best casting in the history of cinema.

Robert Downey Jr is such a good actor. He really, really is. It's so sad that his career has been kind of washed out due to the drugs, though. I hope people keep giving him chances because he's worth it.

i think it's unfortunate thatr his career has been sidelined because of drugs when 99.9% of Hollywood does drugs on a regular basis, and doesn't have nearly the issues he has.

Wow, good choice. Seems like the perfect actor, in my opinion, although yes...I was pulling for Depp, too.
This could be like a Tobey Maguire sort of thing, where people are skeptical about whether or not he can pull it off, and does it flawlessly.

based on performances where downey just kinda rants, especially as of late with a scanner darkly and kiss kiss bang bang, i really cant see him as tony stark. they need some one.... i dunno..... different body build at least definately

right, but he seems , like many actors, to have a style , and that style is not befitting for tony stark

I hear what you're saying, but he seems right for the part, and after you see him in a movie like "Chaplin," you realize while yes, he does have a unique style similar to Nicolas Cage, at the end of the day, he's an actor and can pull shit off the right way if he needs to.

i read Stark's substance abuse problem isnt going to be addressed until the sequels
the first one is just going to be sort of an introduction

i have seen chaplin, i thought he was quite good in it. i just dont really seem him as tony stark regardless. but despite that, i'll wait till i see the movie to really judge him. im trusting the directors with their casting choices (i.e. heath ledger as joker and topher grace as venom). they were cast for a reason, and while i may be skeptical, ill wait and see.
