In short: Much to the chagrin of elitist D.I.Y. punks everywhere, Anti-Flag's major-label debut features its finest, most diverse work yet.

Anti-Flag set off a firestorm of controversy last April when it was announced that the anti-corporate, underground punk band had inked a deal with major label conglomerate RCA/Sony BMG. The band cited the deal as a way to spread its leftist politics, but critics saw the move more like sleeping with the devil.
Regardless of scene politics, Anti-Flag's deal with RCA has resulted in its best work yet. The big-budget production on "For Blood and Empire" makes its earlier work sound like a basement recording, while songs like "War Sucks, Let's Party!" show that the band hasn't lost the fun cynicism of earlier work like "Operation Iraqi Liberation (O.I.L.)."
Although its previous albums showed a narrow range of sound in keeping with the street punk tradition, "For Blood and Empire" pushes the band in new directions while still maintaining an inherently punk sound. "The W.T.O. Kills Farmers" has somewhat of a bouncy ska feel, "Hymn For The Dead" features a trumpet solo interlude and "One Trillion Dollars" marks the first acoustic guitar-led Anti-Flag song on a full-length release.
Despite the backlash from critics of the band's choice to sign with RCA, Anti-Flag has managed to pull off an upset with "For Blood and Empire" that just might make a mark on the mainstream.

I'm shacking it up in an apartment with my Mom in Woodland right now but I spent the majority of this past summer in the drug-infested run down community of White City, OR which makes the meth problem in Medford look like grade-school dime bag shit. I lived in Tallahassee, FL for 11 years in the traquility of "plastic suburbia". Then things went to shit, my dad began dumping crazy cash into a shitty Camaro which subsequently forced us to relocate to the "Lower end of plastic surburia"(the houses might've been two feet closer to each other) which was still pretty nice if you forget the fact that the dysfuction in our family was at a boiling point. It was around 01' when I finally discovered "punk" music. And during the 04' elections I became heavily interested in politics, at first calling myself a "Democrat" but then over the past two years realizing that all politicians are in the words of Hunter S. Thompson, "filthy SWINE", my viewpoints began to shift farther to the left. I've been researching alot on the subject of ANARCHY lately, and here I found myself this summer, my parents divorced and myself leaving with my Mother, fed up with the "plasticity" of Tally-Ho and journeying out West so I could live next door to a speed freak for the summer(albeit a very funny, and amicable one). I guess my point is, everyone has to start somewhere. There are infinite paths to enlightment in my book.

In short: Much to the chagrin of elitist D.I.Y. punks everywhere, Anti-Flag's major-label debut features its finest, most diverse work yet.

Anti-Flag set off a firestorm of controversy last April when it was announced that the anti-corporate, underground punk band had inked a deal with major label conglomerate RCA/Sony BMG. The band cited the deal as a way to spread its leftist politics, but critics saw the move more like sleeping with the devil.
Regardless of scene politics, Anti-Flag's deal with RCA has resulted in its best work yet. The big-budget production on "For Blood and Empire" makes its earlier work sound like a basement recording, while songs like "War Sucks, Let's Party!" show that the band hasn't lost the fun cynicism of earlier work like "Operation Iraqi Liberation (O.I.L.)."
Although its previous albums showed a narrow range of sound in keeping with the street punk tradition, "For Blood and Empire" pushes the band in new directions while still maintaining an inherently punk sound. "The W.T.O. Kills Farmers" has somewhat of a bouncy ska feel, "Hymn For The Dead" features a trumpet solo interlude and "One Trillion Dollars" marks the first acoustic guitar-led Anti-Flag song on a full-length release.
Despite the backlash from critics of the band's choice to sign with RCA, Anti-Flag has managed to pull off an upset with "For Blood and Empire" that just might make a mark on the mainstream.

i think justin is more punk than anti flag. on his new album, he uses a mandolin in production. anti flag doesnt expand creatively because theyre afraid that nobody will die for the government or mobilize for peace if they dont use the same retarded chord progressions. they are untalented and dont allow cigarette smoking at their shows.

So what if they don't want people smoking at their shows? Thats a good thing. In my province its illegal to smoke in any public place. If you do, you get tossed out and you get fined. I think every state/privince should have this law. Smoking not only affects you but it also affects others and I don't think people should have to deal with second hand smoke and get lung cancer if they don't want to.
